Letter from the Executive Director and Board President

What would our county look like if we, as a community, could end domestic violence? What would it look like if we all worked together toward this common goal? At DAWN we believe we would have communities that are safe, just and equitable for everyone. This is ambitious. And yet it’s the vision of DAWN. The Board of Directors and staff take our mission seriously, and believe wholeheartedly that domestic violence can indeed one day end. Guided by this belief, the agency created a strategic plan in 2011 for 2012-2016 which will take us into a bold new future and closer to our vision for a more peaceful community.

In our plan we established six primary areas of focus to make sure we’re doing the best work in the best way. They are: 1) prioritize DAWN’s efforts to prevent domestic violence; 2) advance excellent advocacy and programs

that address the needs of survivors; 3) maintain a cohesive well-integrated organization; 4) widen community engagement and involvement in initiatives to end domestic violence; 5) create a strong foundation for the health and sustainability of the organization on all levels; and 6) advance cultural fluency in all organizational efforts.

This past year has been very successful for DAWN in other ways too. DAWN’s Domestic Violence Institute has trained more than 100 ambassadors, all from diverse walks of life. They are fully informed and able to effectively raise awareness and offer support in their circles of influence. Volunteer options have been broadened beyond serving on our crisis line to include opportunities to serve throughout the agency: including shelter, as part of the development and administrative teams, and as co-facilitators of our many support groups.

Because of the incredible hours of service contributed by volunteers, we are able to increase our capacity to directly serve survivors and focus on education and social change, including more legal clinics to serve low-income survivors.
