For Hire

You don’t cover your fine furniture in plastic, so why would you cover your fine wood floors with plastic urethane? This is a question that comes up often since there are so many urethane products in the marketplace.  Just so you know that we are not completely biased we also happen to manufacture a couple of excellent urethane products; but if you are choosing a finish for your fine wood floors, you are probably concerned about 3 important issues:  Beauty,  Durability, and  Ease of Application.  We think that when you consider all 3, you’ll choose a Waterlox Tung Oil Floor Finish.

BeautyWaterlox tung oil floor finishes give a rich, hand-rubbed patina that enhances the grain. Unlike urethanes that have a “sheet of plastic” appearance and lie on top of the wood surface, Waterlox finishes penetrate deep into the wood pores forming a bond from within. This penetrating feature gives the wood an “open pore” appearance that is desired by many people seeking a natural-looking wood surface.

DurabilityThere is a misconception that urethanes are the most durable surface available for wood floors… well, there are a couple of ways to define DURABLE. Waterlox forms an elastic, protective finish that won’t chip, peel, crack, or wrinkle.  While urethanes are slightly harder than our tung oil/resin finishes, Waterlox retains a tough yet elastic surface that “gives” with the blows of everyday life. Because our finishes penetrate into your wood floors, when scratches or wear areas do occur, they are far less noticeable than with a urethane finish that simply lies on the surface. If noticeable scratches occur, all you need to do is clean the damaged area well with soap and water and then reapply a new coat where needed. No need to sand down to bare wood or refinish the entire floor.

Ease of applicationWaterlox is easier to apply than urethanes.  Our finishes have a longer “open time” meaning they stay workable longer than waterborne or oil based urethanes. Waterlox is also self-leveling:  lap marks, turns, and cut-ins disappear. Stain can be added to Waterlox, thus, eliminating time-consuming steps, and, unlike urethanes, you never have to sand or screen between coats for adhesion purposes.

An amateur can achieve professional-looking results using Waterlox (see our Floor Finishing Guide).  Even if you are considering hiring a contractor to sand and refinish your floors, years from now when your floors need to be refreshed, the job will be quicker, easier, less expensive, and without the mess of having to sand down to bare wood.Given the facts, we don’t think that you’d be crazy to choose a urethane finish for your floors…we just think that you’d be wise to choose a Waterlox Tung Oil Floor Finish.
