Légendes, genealogies

When I composed Légendes, I sought to discover these same ideas of a blur-ring of past and present and of a freedom of imagination. The eleven pieces on this recording give the impression of an inner voyage, a journey of listening that forms a type of wordless narrative thread. Their titles are starting points from which doors open and suggest an itinerary. The element that sets everything in motion can be a landscape, a sound, a feeling, a state of mind. The pieces enter into dialogue at times, whilst at others they are in opposition or simply continue. Whether joyful or thoughtful, rhythmically lively or slow, their goal is to have the listener enter a keenly sensitive space in which he can set out his own story.

All of the effects that Légendes employs — illusions, mirages, deformations, echoes — have been realised thanks to a type of intimacy with the piano, an instrument that is ageless and yet belongs to every age. I have attempted to convey the idea of suspended time by making use of the piano’s middle pedal. The interplay of contrasts such as distance and proximity, empty and full, associated to an exploration of harmonic texture, endeavour to create a halo of sound that could be described as spectra-tonal. Laura Mikkola, the Finnish pianist who has recorded these works, has masterfully realised all of their resonances.

David Chaillou: a dialogical music

David Chaillou’s music puts an almost universal tendency to typologise in the wrong. It is of course possible to define various aspects, but it seems particularly difficult to categorise. One of the reasons for this difficulty is undoubtedly that it has freed itself from being described in specifically musical terms. If we listen to it even, if not always, it in a state of fleeting attention (to use a phrase borrowed from the psychoanalysts), we perceive its dialogical dimension. Characters give the appearance of wishing to meet, but the meeting is furtive and always begins anew. We can guess, as in a survey, at the traces left behind, the imprints (to borrow one of his titles), but can find no certainty; we advance bare-handed, equipped only with our capacity for imagination.

There are authentic elective affinities between the works of David Chaillou and the thought of Francis Jacques, the modern philosopher of otherness. These affinities seem to me to provide an interpretative key that reinforces the idea of an art that is not addressed solely to the ear. The dialogical principle, according to Francis Jacques, stresses the dimension, incomplete by its nature, of the meeting. Consequently, it is not just a matter of understanding the musical or verbal dis-course; the spoken word, the musical note take place, as wrote Martin Buber, in the emotive space between people, beyond the words of those holding the dialogue. This principle thus becomes of universal import as, virtually speaking, it is addressed to the community of spirits. It consequentially breaks off all verbal violence, the same element that David Chaillou also keeps at a distance, in his Diableries in particular.

The French composer David Chaillou was born in 1971. Trained at the CNSMDP and at the Sorbonne, he writes for various combinations of instruments, including solo instruments, small ensembles, voice, orchestra, and mixed music. His music is both expressive and innovative and is an original synthesis between French music (Grisey, Dutilleux, Debussy, Ravel) and the minimalist school. He has received commissions from the Orchestre de Bretagne, the Committee for the 500th anniversary of Trinità dei Monti in Rome, and the Beethoven Festival in Bonn as part of the 50th anniversary of the Traité de l’Élysée between France and Germany. His works have been broadcast by France Musique, ORF (Austria), Orpheus Radio (Russia), RTS (Switzerland), Arte, Mezzo, Telewizja Polska (Poland) and France Télévisions and are performed in many European countries, Finland included.His recent works include:

• Little Nemo (libretto by Arnaud Delalande and Olivier Balazuc), an opera first performed at Angers-Nantes Opéra and the Opéra de Dijon in 2017 with the mezzo-soprano Chloé Briot and the Ensemble Ars Nova. The opera was awarded the Prix de l’Associ- ation Beaumarchais (SACD).• Léger au front, music theatre performed at the Théâtre de l’Athénée in Paris in 2018 with the sculptor Patrice Alexandre, staging by Jacques Gamblin.• Tableaux, a song to a poem by Picasso first performed at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.• Solo for violon, first performed by Valeria Zorina at the Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid in 2019.

David Chaillou lives in Paris. He is also a senior lecturer at the Université de Lille (INSPE). His music has been recorded by Gramola and Preiser Records in Austria and by Urtext Digital Classics in the USA. Légendes is the first recording to contain only works by him.

The Finnish pianist Laura Mikkola was born in 1974. She has won prizes at several well-known international competitions: second prize and audience prize at the Concours Reine Élisabeth de Belgique (1995), first prize at the Unisa Transnet Piano Competition of Pretoria (RSA), first prize at the Concours Maj Lind in Helsinki, and first prize at the Concours international de piano Maurice Ravel in Saint-Jean-de-Luz. She studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia as well as at Bloomington University, both in the USA. Her teachers and mentors include Murray Perahia, Menahem Pressler, Gary Graffman, Dimitri Bashkirov, Tapani Valsta and Ferenc Rados. She has performed as soloist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre, the Münchner Philharmoniker, the orchestra of Stuttgart Opera, The National Orchestra of Belgium, The Riyal Philharmonic Orchestra of Liège, the Washington National Sympnony Orchestra, the Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra, the Essen Philharmonic Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra of Vienna; she has also worked with the conductors Esa-Pekka Salonen, Leif Segerstam, Philippe Entremont, Valery Gergiev, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Mikko Franck, Pierre Bartholomée and Hannu Lintu, and has performed at the Herkulessaal in Munich, in the Suntory Hall in Tokyo, at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, at Carnegie Hall in New York and at the Tonhalle in Zurich. In the field of contemporary music, she has recorded the Concerto of the Estonian composer Erkki-Sven Tüür with Paavo Järvi and the Frankfurt Radio Orchestra for ECM, as well as the complete piano works of the Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara, several of which were dedicated to her, for Naxos. Laura Mikkola is also artistic director of the Iitti festival in Finland.

Légendes, généalogies

En composant Légendes, j’ai voulu retrouver au piano cette même idée de brouil-lage entre passé et présent, et la liberté de l’imaginaire. Les onze musiques de ce disque se présentent comme un voyage intérieur, un parcours d’écoute qui forme une sorte de fil narratif sans paroles. Les titres sont des points de départ à partir desquels des portes s’ouvrent et suggèrent un itinéraire. L’élément déclencheur peut être un paysage, un son, une sensation, un état d’âme. Les pièces tantôt se répondent, tantôt s’opposent ou se prolongent. Qu’elles soient joyeuses ou méditatives, rythmées ou lentes, leur but est de faire entrer l’auditeur dans un espace sensible où chacun pourra tracer son propre récit.

Illusions, mirages, déformations, échos, tous ces effets sur lesquels joue Légendes ont pu être réalisés grâce à une forme d’intimité avec le piano, instrument sans âge et de tous les âges. En utilisant la troisième pédale de l’instrument, j’ai essayé de rendre la sensation du temps suspendu. Le jeu sur les contrastes (éloignement et proximité, vide et plein) et le travail sur la texture harmonique tentent de créer un halo sonore que l’on pourrait qualifier de spectra-tonal. La pianiste finlandaise Laura Mikkola, qui a enregistré ces œuvres, a magistralement fait entendre toutes leurs résonances.

David Chaillou : une musique dialogique

La musique de David Chaillou met en défaut une tendance probablement uni-verselle à typologiser. On peut certes en définir quelques traits, mais il semble particulièrement difficile de la catégoriser. L’une des raisons de cette difficulté est sans doute qu’elle s’émancipe des descriptions en termes spécifiquement musicaux. En l’écoutant, même, et peut-être surtout, dans un état d’attention flottante (selon le vocabulaire qu’affectionnent les psychanalystes), on en perçoit la dimension dialogique. Des personnages paraissent chercher à se rencontrer, mais la rencontre est furtive, sans cesse à recommencer. On devine, comme dans une enquête (mais peut-être s’agit-il plutôt d’une quête ?), les traces laissées, les Empreintes, selon le titre d’une de ses œuvres, mais nulle certitude ne s’im-pose : nous avançons, à Mains nues, munis de notre seule capacité d’imaginer.

Il y a entre les compositions de David Chaillou et la pensée de Francis Jacques, philosophe contemporain de l’altérité, d’authentiques affinités électives. Elles me semblent une clef interprétative qui conforte l’hypothèse d’un art qui ne s’adresse pas exclusivement à l’ouïe. Le principe dialogique, chez Francis Jacques, insiste sur la dimension par nature inachevée de la rencontre. Dès lors, celle-ci ne se réduit pas à la compréhension du discours ; le mot parlé, ici la note, se passe, comme l’écrivait Martin Buber, dans la sphère vibrante entre les personnes, au-delà de ce que disent les dialoguants. Il acquiert ainsi une portée universelle puisque, virtuellement, il s’adresse à la communauté des esprits. Il suspend dès lors la violence verbale, celle-là même que David Chaillou tient à distance, notamment dans ses Diableries.

Beim Wort „Legende“ denkt man an eine weit zurückliegende Geschichte, die tausendmal erzählt wurde und ständig verändert wird. Sie findet weder in der Gegenwart noch in der Vergangenheit statt, sondern vielmehr im unbegrenzten Raum von Fantasie und Zeitlosigkeit.

Legenden, Genealogien

Als ich Légendes komponierte, wollte ich auf dem Klavier eben diese Idee des Ineinanderfließens von Vergangenheit und Gegenwart sowie der Freiheit der Fantasie wiederfinden. Die elf Musikstücke dieser Aufnahme sind als eine innere Reise zu verstehen, ein auditiver Weg, der eine Art narrativen Faden ohne Worte bildet. Dabei sind die Titel die Ausgangspunkte, an denen sich Pforten öffnen und eine Route vorschlagen. Das auslösende Moment kann eine Landschaft, ein Ton, ein Gefühl oder ein Gemütszustand sein. Bald antworten die Stücke einander, bald sind sie gegensätzlich, bald setzen sie einander fort. Gleich ob sie fröhlich oder meditativ, rhythmisch oder langsam sind, ihr Ziel besteht darin, den Zuhörer in einen empfindsamen Raum eintreten zulassen, in dem jeder seiner eigenen Erzählung folgen kann.

Illusionen, Trugbilder, Verzerrungen oder Echos, all diese Effekte mit denen Légendes spielt, konnten dank einer Art tiefen Vertrautheit mit dem Klavier zustande kommen, einem zu allen Zeiten zeitlosen Instrument. Durch den Einsatz des dritten Pedals versuchte ich, das Gefühl einer stillstehenden Zeit zu vermit-teln. Das Spiel mit Kontrasten (Entfernung und Nähe, Leere und Fülle) sowie die Arbeit an der harmonischen Textur versuchen einen klanglichen Lichthof zu bilden, den man als spektra-tonal bezeichnen könnte. Die finnische Pianistin Laura Mikkola, die diese Werke aufnahm, bringt all diese Resonanzen meisterhaft zu Gehör.

David Chaillou: eine dialogische Musik

David Chaillous Musik untergräbt die weit verbreitete Tendenz zur Typologisierung. Zwar kann man einige Charakterzüge seiner Musik definieren, doch scheint es besonders schwierig, sie zu katalogisieren. Einer der Gründe für diese Schwierigkeit liegt zweifellos darin, dass sie sich von Beschreibungen durch spezifisch musikalische Ausdrucksweisen nicht erfassen lässt. Selbst wenn oder sogar vor allem wenn man sie (laut einem von den Psychoanalytikern geschätzten Vokabular) mit freischwebender Aufmerksamkeit anhört, nimmt man ihre dialo-gische Dimension wahr. Figuren scheinen zu versuchen, einander zu begegnen, doch die Begegnung ist flüchtig und muss immer aufs Neue in die Wege geleitet werden. Man vermutet, wie bei einer Untersuchung (aber vielleicht handelt es sich eher um eine Suche?) hinterlassene Spuren zu finden, gemäß dem Titel eines seiner Werke, erlangt jedoch keinerlei Gewissheit: Wir gehen mit Bloßen Händen vor und sind dafür nur mit unserem Vorstellungsvermögen ausgestattet.

Zwischen den Kompositionen von David Chaillou und dem Denken von Francis Jacques, einem zeitgenössischen Philosophen der Andersartigkeit, bestehen echte Wahlverwandtschaften. Ich halte sie für einen interpretativen Schlüssel, der die Hypothese einer Kunst stützt, die sich nicht ausschließlich an das Gehör wendet. Das dialogische Prinzip besteht bei Francis Jacques auf der von Natur aus unvollendeten Dimension der Begegnung. Folglich beschränkt sie sich nicht darauf, den Diskurs zu verstehen. Wie Martin Buber schrieb, erfolgt das gesprochene Wort – hier die Note – in der vibrierenden Sphäre zwischen den Personen jenseits der Aussage derer, die den Dialog führen. So erhält es eine universelle Tragweite, da es sich virtuell an die geistige Gemeinschaft richtet. Es unterbricht somit eben die verbale Gewalt, die David Chaillou besonders in seinen Diableries auf Distanz hält.

Der Dialog, zu dem uns seine Musik einlädt, geht die Wette ein, dass eine echte Kommunikation trotz der vielfältigen Codes und unserer Zugehörigkeit zu geschlossenen Gemeinschaften möglich ist.

Jahrestag des Élysée-Vertrags zwischen Frankreich und Deutschland. Seine Werke wurden von France Musique, dem ORF (Österreich), Orpheus Radio (Russland), RTS (Schweiz), Arte, Mezzo, Telewizja Polska (Polen) und France Télévisions gesendet.
