The power of the pen is not in the color of ink it spills; but power of the words it spells. World Book Day is organized by UNESCO on 23 April every year. On this occasion our school started with The Literary Fest-Mélange 2019. A plethora of events were spread across the week, to let the students experience the magic that is created by words! To commence the literary week, a special assembly was conducted in the school. 23 April also marks the birth and death anniversary of William Shakespeare- The Bard of Avon. Every year, on this day, we take a pledge to read, cherish and treasure books. Like every year, this year too our library department paid special tribute by awarding special badges to the Voracious Readers”. A wonderful and auspicious beginning to the much awaited Literary Week. Everything can have drama if its done right- an interesting twist was added to English texts in form of an Interschool Competition Pep Up The Print’, which was organised for grades XI and XII. The participating teams dramatized a prose text or poem from the prescribed English textbooks in form of a mime, musical or a one-act play. The audience was amazed at the creative and innovative manner in which the texts were brought to life. Sherwood Convent School emerged as the winners with Keeping Quietas their choice of text and Lions Public School were the runners up for their portrayal of Should Wizard Hit Mommy’. The theme of this years liter- ary fest - Melange was 'Human Libraries', a concept that has found so much rele- vance today. It reinforces the fact that the treasure of human experiences, thoughts and ideas is more precious than any printed word. And keeping in sync with the theme, many interactive and informative sessions were organised by experts and eminent resource persons. They replaced books and technology and shared with the stu- dents their vast experiences in various fields. Thus, proving the fact that we should never ever underestimate the power of dreams and the influ- ence of the human spirit. The potential for great- ness lives within each of us. The endeavour was to provide our students with proactive platform and opportunities in the form of human libraries to chisel and sharpen their skills of communication and interaction. Every year, on this day, we take a pledge to read, cherish and treasure books. Like every year, this year too our library department paid special tribute by awarding special badges to the “Voracious Readers”. A wonderful and auspicious beginning to the much awaited Literary Week.

“Everything can have drama if it’s done right” - an interesting twist was added to English texts in form of an Interschool Competition ‘Pep Up The Print’, which was organised for grades XI and XII. The participating teams dramatized a prose text

or poem from the prescribed English textbooks in form of a mime, musical or a one-act play. The audience was amazed at the creative and innovative manner in which the texts were brought to life. Sherwood Convent School emerged as the winners with ‘Keeping Quiet’ as their choice of text and Lions Public School were

the runners up for their portrayal of ‘Should Wizard Hit Mommy’.

It reinforces the fact that the treasure of human experiences, thoughts and ideas is more precious than any printed word. And keeping in sync with the theme, many interactive and

Story telling is an effective tool for communication. During Me-lange 2019, the children of UKG participated in the story telling session by Ms. Monisha. She captured the attention of young buds through the use of beautiful puppets, props, facial expres-sions and voice modulation. On similar lines, an event ‘Stepping into the world of fables’ was organized for the students of grade 1. The guest for the day was Ms. Neelam, who conducted an interactive story session. Stu-dents actively participated by imitating the animal characters. Teachers also took follow-up activities in the class by narrating different stories with the help of puppets.

A fun-filled workshop was organized for the students of grade III. Mr. Ajit Narayan, a well-known cartoonist, guided the stu-dents by highlighting the basics of sketching cartoons with the help of his illustrated step-by-step cartoon book set. Students were seen diligently focusing on how to distinguish a yawning expression from an expression of yelling by using simple lines and figures. Fun competitions were held during the session where the students showcased all that they had learnt. Exciting as well as creative!

It is very rightly said that Sanskrit is the language of the soul. To elucidate upon the same, an extremely interesting session - ‘Gateway to Sanskrit’ was conducted for the students of grade V. The importance of Sanskrit language was impressed upon the students. It was a very informative session as the students learnt that Sanskrit is a computer friendly language and also improves brain function, as the language is quite logical, easy and based on rules. The students participated enthusiastically. What caught their interest was the fact that Sanskrit can help them boost their scores.

An event, ‘Story in Pictures’ which was organized for the stu-dents of grade IV aimed at bringing texts alive through the narra-tion of a compelling story, ‘King Ashoka and The Garden of Herbs’ by Ms. Anju Joshi. Students imitated and impersonated the gardener from the story. They also learnt values like kind-ness, hard work and persistence along with facts about herbs and trees. They were seen actively participating in the dramatization. “Storytelling is experiential, and it’s necessary to experience it with our senses to make it come alive” was rightly said by Ms. Anju Joshi. The students thoroughly enjoyed both the story and the drama.

Gestures are an inherent part of human communication and we all gesticulate when we speak. Gestures are important precur-sor and predictor of child’s language and cognitive develop-ment. Keeping this in mind ‘Magic Hands’ session was held in the school auditorium. The session was conducted by Ms.Kabita Mohanty and Ms.Radhika Sharma. They stressed upon the importance of rhythmic gestures, the rhythmic move-ments of the hands/arms. The exuberant children learnt various mudras like Pataka, Ardhpataka, Mayura, Suchi, Chandrakala, Sarpsheesh, Chature (Single hand gestures) Anjali, Pushpput (Double hand gestures) while narrating the story.

Puppets are a great way to engage the attention and imagination of children. A puppet show was organized for our tiny tots of pre nursery and LKG in our school. Mr. Ranjit, the guest of the day, enraptured the little ones with his voice modulation and effective use of creative puppets. The squeals and laughter of the young children was proof of the joy and fun they experi-enced during the puppet show. The teachers also took follow-up activities by narrating different stories in the class with the help of puppets.

“Reading, writing, speaking and listening - the most important skills we humans possess.” This is how Mr. Dikshant Malik began with what was an innovative workshop on creativity and research for the students of Class X. Interactive as well as in-formative, students learnt a lot from the activity. Mr. Malik

kept the audience engrossed with humourous anecdotes from his student life. He encouraged students to participate in de-bates and develop habits of reading and writing. Public speak-ing and its importance was stressed upon. Lively and interac-

tive, the session was a great hit with the students.

“We cannot change what we are not aware of, once we are aware, we cannot help but change.” This is exactly how gender equality should be. To throw light on the same Ms. Moksha Sharma, an alumna of the school, conducted a workshop for students of grade XII. She enumerated the facts that highlighted the grave situation of gender bias in the country. Lots to think about! Communication, appreciation, understanding are the three pillars of modern relationships. On the same lines, an interactive session was held for students of grade XI. Six students from grade XI dis-cussed at length the state of changing relationship in present times. From factors like digital friends to busy life schedules, personal experiences to timeworn cultures, all aspects of relationships were touched upon- extremely enlightening and thought provoking!

Adolescence is a turbulent age of great mental, emotional stress and mood swings. To help students combat this chal-lenge, Mrs. Anju Joshi conducted an extremely interactive workshop as she brought to life Daniel Goleman’s books ‘Working with Emotional Intelligence’ and ‘Social Intelli-gence’. Grade IX students were introduced to the concept of emotional quotient and how it is different from social quotient. They were given hypothetical situations and their responses were recorded. She also discussed at length, the ideal responses to everyday situations. The students were also taught about how to control their temper and adapt to the situations in a bet-ter way. The students were counseled to develop sensitivity and empathy for better social interactions.

For the very conscious and sensitive teenagers, an informative session was conducted by Ms. Sudeshna Gupta on the topic “Love Thy Self” through a talk on the book ‘Nobody is Perfect’. In the traumatic times of bodyshaming and the importance being given to façade and appearances, the endeavor was to instill in

the students self confidence and self love.

Ms. Sonia Baweja, the human library for the day, was accorded an enthusiastic welcome by the agog and avid VII graders, who eagerly awaited the event ‘Tales within Tales’. The students discussed their library habits and got to know about the concept of ‘Human Libraries’. While motivating them to develop skills

like writing book reports, Ms. Sonia also amused them by ask-ing them to come up with the full form of LIBRARY acronym. An engaging story narrated by Ms. Sonia had the students ex-tremely enthused and amused.
