M aths Extension Classes at Kambrya Our twenty-five year six students continue to take part in the Maths extension classes at

Kambrya College. This week, Kambrya maths teacher, Mr Rob Stark, built upon the students’ knowledge of GRAPHING! LEARNING GOAL: To construct various types of graphs using a

variety of data SUCCESS CRITERIA: For students to record data accurately For students to use the data to create a variety of

graphs For students to interpret graphs correctly ACTIVITIES / TASKS: Line Graphs Used to show changes over

time Can be used to show these

changes between different groups e.g. changes in finance in a company

Pie Charts Used when trying to compare

parts of a whole e.g. number of boys versus number of girls in a class

Bar Graphs Used to compare between

different groups e.g. average maths test scores between classes

The students first of all collected their data, in tabular form, on a physical activity undertaken and then elected the most appropriate form of graph to visually show this data.

Melbourne Aquarium!

On Thursday 21st July, all of the Grade 2 classes, and Rosemary’s 1/2 class, went on an excursion to the Melbourne Aquarium. The students had a wonderful time learning about many different sea creatures. They had the opportunity to touch the beautiful sea stars and even shark eggs at the Rockpool! Many of the students were thrilled to find the sea creature that they had been investigating during our Water World inquiry unit. This experience provided an enriched l e a r n i n g o p p o r t u n i t y w h i c h complemented the children’s learning back in the classroom. The team would especially like to thank all of their parent helpers: Leonie Roberts, Laura Bracerus, Rachel Torchia, Jo Dorning, Paula Lester, Dawn Young, Kathleen Baxter, and the other parents that met us in the city on the day!

The Melbourne Aquarium On the 21st of July, 2CM, 2DK, 2AD and 1/2RG went to the Melbourne Aquarium because we wanted to learn about sea creatures, what they eat and where they live. First, we got a sticker to show that we were having an excursion. Then, we saw some penguins. There were two types: King and Gentoo Penguins. There were two King penguin chicks but I couldn’t see any baby Gentoo penguins. One fact I know is that penguins eat a lot of food. Imagine what it would be like if you ate about 15 g of food every hour. You’d never stop eating! Soon after, we saw some sharks. There was the Port Jackson Sharks and the Carpet Necked Sharks. After, we saw some shark eggs. The Port Jackson’s egg was curly and the baby shark came out of the tip. I can’t imagine how small the shark would be! Eventually, we saw some sharks and rays. One of the shark’s names was Mitchell and one of the ray’s names was Mars. Then, we saw Mr G, which stands for Mr Ginormous. He was the fastest fish and the biggest fish in the whole tank! Back to Mitchell, he wouldn’t even hurt a fly (because flies don’t live in water)! There were divers there and he didn’t even come close to them! Next, we went to see a crocodile. At first, he didn’t move but then he started moving. When we went to another tank, I saw a Blue-Ringed Octopus.* I also saw a cuttlefish. In the end, it was time to have lunch and go. I was surprised to see that it was a very short bus trip, and, don’t forget … IT WAS FUN!!! *Blue-Ringed Octopus are very poisonous because they have killed people many times. By Leah in 2CM

To celebrate the 100th birthday of Roald Dahl we are having an incursion called “Witches, Giants, Peaches and Twits,” which is a an exciting, h i l a r i o u s , i n t e r a c t i v e improvisation show which the whole school will be attending.

This is also Literacy Week and the whole school will be looking at a variety of Roald Dahl books and completing some ‘Whoopsy-Splunkers’ activities. To make this a ‘Gloriuptious’ day we are requesting the children come dressed as a character from one of Roald Dahl’s books . This will take place on the first of September. They could be as colourful as Willy Wonka or as scruffy as the Twits. So get organising your ‘Phizz-Whizzing’ costume.

P LEASE DIRECT MONEY FOR EXCURSIONS, ETC TO YOUR CLASSROOM TEACHER - NOT TO THE OFFICE. Please hand money and permission slip in sealed envelopes to classroom teacher first thing in the morning. By following this process teachers are aware that your child will be attending the excursion and mark them

off their lists. Money is collected by office staff and processed each morning and a receipt given back to teachers along with permission slips. All money is tallied and banked daily – no money is left on the premises. If you wish to pay by credit card, a proforma is available from the office. This can be filled out with details and placed in a sealed envelope and handed to your classroom teacher

Please deliver cash in a sealed envelope with your child’s name and grade on the front by 9.30 a.m. If you have a number of children attending an excursion you can place all money and permission slips in the one envelope with children’s names and grades on the front and deliver to one of the children’s teachers. The office staff will be able to allocate money to the children’s particular items and distribute permission slips and receipts back to teachers. Enve-lopes are available at the office. If you have a large amount to be paid or need to process an EFTPOS transaction through a savings account you can make arrangements to pay at the office. We also have a new Qkr payment system on our Skoolbag app. If you download our Skoolbag app and Qkr payment app you can now pay for your child’s excursion on line.

All change will be delivered to the children in the afternoon. Re-imbursements will only be made under certain circumstances – they will be made by cheque (no cash transactions are made).

Notices are sent out with a final collection time – please adhere to this time. All money and permission slips are re-quired to be sent back by this date – otherwise your child will not be able to attend. This enables us to confirm book-ings and numbers with bus companies and organisations we are visiting. Also we need to send details to the Depart-ment of Education Emergency Management for all excursions, camps, etc. We also need to accommodate students who will not be attending.

We would appreciate it if parents could please follow these processes.
