Message from the Principal
E nga iwi, e nga karangatanga maha, te iti me
te rahi, tena koutou katoa. Tena hoki koe i o
tatou aitua, e hingahinga haere haere nei.
Noho mai i roto i te ao wairua. Tatou o te ao
ora. Tihei mauri ora.
Our 2018 cohort of students were well
represented and supported by Principals,
staff, parents and caregivers from our
contributing schools as they were welcomed
into our college by the kai-karanga, kai-taki
and school haka powhiri. Matua Jason Tane,
Matua Tohe Ashby and Matua Huru Tipene
shared inspirational words of advice and
caution during this special ceremony which
acknowledged our responsibility of nurturing
and educating our new entrants. This strong
showing of support added mana to the
occasion and I acknowledge all who graced
us with your presence.
Kai-korero paid tribute to the remarkable
contribution of Noeline Lemon toward the
education of generations of students who
passed through Kawakawa Primary School
and Bay of Islands College. I salute and
acknowledge a great friend and colleague
for whom I have the highest respect.
I welcome Mrs Kathy Boswell to the whanau of Bay College as teacher of Mathematics
and Physical education. Kathy is an experienced teacher who has taught throughout
both the North & South Islands. Alongside Kathy I acknowledge 16 brand new stu-
dents and whanau to our school.
This year Kauri House was retired and Kauri students were distributed throughout
Miro, Rata and Totara. Matua Dion Prime has accepted the challenge of transitioning
Kauri students into Miro & Rata Houses with the express intention of strengthening the
culture of these two houses. In particular the tuakana / teina, the whanaungatanga
and tautoko relationships within both these houses.
I welcome Mr Jason Tane, Principal of Moerewa School onto our Board of Trustees
this term. He joins chair-person Del Bristow, Roger Dephoff, Patricia Simeon, Kelly
Stradford, staff representative Shelley Morgan, student representative, Jessie
Henwood. I am particularly excited to retain the services of Kelly Stratford following
her success in replacing fellow ex-student of Bay College, Willow Jean Prime, as
FNDC representative for the Whangaroa / Bay of Islands ward
For months now our Reo Rua staff, students and whanau have toiled tirelessly at
numerous fundraising events at school and in our community in preparation for their
long awaited European Tour which departs our shores in October. They very much
appreciate your support to date and have more tasty food and entertainment events
planned.
In recent years our senior Geography class teacher Esther Van Dyke and husband
Andrew Smith have accompanied two tours to Cambodia. The Board have given
approval for a third visit in 2019 so there are some exciting times ahead for those
involved.
The shout of joy from Ruth Hills, the Head of Physical Education must have been
heard all around Kawakawa when we received word that the contractors are finally
moving in to start building our new gymnasium. The completion date is a lottery still,
with the weather that we have been experiencing, but July is the latest rumour.
The outpouring of support from whanau and ex-students of Bay of Islands College to
the wanton act of vandalism during the holiday was truly humbling. The hurt cut deep
into the community as the full extent of the damage was revealed. Amongst the
carnage were treasured trophies that were irreparable. I thank you all for your letters
of sympathy and your koha toward repairing the damage.
Our Year 9 Chromebook roll out evening was well attended as well as the
subsequent follow up evenings. I am pleased that whanau have recognized the
importance of their child being equipped with this educational tool. The digital
future is upon us and it is incumbent upon us as a school to ensure that we meet the
needs of our students as well as the demands of the digital workforce that awaits
them. Please note that new Chromebooks cannot be issued until whanau and
students have attended a Kawa of Care evening.
This has been a stellar beginning of year for Karetu Marae and Karetu School. The
Prime Minister’s visit to the marae to acknowledge her MP’s who whakapapa to Ngati
Manu hapu and the recent badging of our Head Girl, Jessie Henwood and Head Boy,
Levi Timperley both graduates of Karetu School were reason for celebration and
congratulations.
Students who achieved merit and excellences in NCEA in 2017 were acknowledged
recently at our assembly. One of the intentions of this celebration is to inspire juniors
to pursue their goals and to aim for the stars. To this end former Head Boy of Bay
College, Chayse Bennet-Simeon has been employed recently to mentor students who
just missed out on achieving NCEA Level 1. This helping hand will get them over the
line to join their age group at Level 2.
The challenge that confronts Chayse and subject teachers with some of these
students is their poor attendance for which there are many reasons some legitimate
and sadly others not. Once again I call for the support of parents and caregivers to
be vigilant about the attendance of your child. Help us to instill and normalize their
responsibility for being punctual and respectful of their work.
Noho ora mai

On Friday 2nd February 2018 we held a Powhiri to welcome all our new students and staff to Bay of Islands College. Our
Principal, Mr John Paitai, addressed a full school assembly and welcomed the new students, staff and their whanau to the
Bay of Islands College community.
After the assembly the new Year 9 students were treated to some fun activities to help them get to know some of our Senior
Peer Support Leaders. A fun time was had by all.
Te Roopu o Peowhairangi 2018: Our Kapa Haka started the year off at full speed with a performance at Ngati Manu marae in support of Kelvin Davis, Willow-Jean Prime and the Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. Their performance amazed the crowd. It was described as ‘fierce’ and ‘energetic’ by some of the locals and the Prime Minister said that she thoroughly enjoyed the last item where the performers sang a medley of old songs. Term 1 is always a busy time of year for Kapa Haka, so far they have performed nearly every weekend! At the end of this term, they will be performing at the annual Te Tai Tokerau Secondary Schools Festival at Kerikeri High school on the 11-12 April. This year we are trying to enter 2 Kapa Haka. We have a tuakana group - Te Roopu o Peowhairangi, and a new teina group - Kete Taonga. Hard work and support from our whanau and community will ensure that Bay of Islands College will have 2 groups this year which means that possibly 80 students will be taking to the stage! Kapa Haka is a positive initiative for the students and they appreciate all the support they receive from the school, whanau and community. Below are the important dates remaining for this term, if you are free, come along and see what we do, you are more than welcome.

was very impressed with
Mac’s effort with his first wood

Keep up the great work Mac,
the pictures show a pretty
impressive Desk Tidy.

ALL year 9—12 students must
wear correct school uniform
everyday. We have new and used
uniform items available for
purchase in the school shop.
We also have black canvas
shoes available for purchase
at ($10 or $20).
We want all students dressed
correctly and ready for
learning. Therefore, if students
arrive in non-uniform clothing or footwear, the
College will have second-hand gear they can use for
the day or until they can purchase the correct uniform
item. Parents, please help to ensure that your child is dressed
correctly for school and learning.
Thank you for your assistance with this matter.
Beautifying the School
Kia ora to you all. Last year, with
the Board’s consent, a team of staff
and students formed a committee to

new designs. The Committee has
drafted an Action Plan which can
easily be made available to view.
Our Plea
Can you help with any donation
towards the costs involved to carry
out this project OR have you the
expertise in landscaping or interior
design OR are you a handyman/
woman with time available to
complete some parts of our Action
Plan?
If you can help in anyway please
email our Deputy Principal Zorina
Wigglesworth [email protected]
with your contact details and how
you can help us.

PUBLIC HEALTH NURSE VISITS FOR YEAR 9 STUDENTS
Starting beginning of Term 2, Rubie Culley, the District Health Nurse for the District
Health Board will commence a school based and Community clinical service to all
students who are in Year 9. Every student is asked for their consent before an
assessment is undertaken, and has the right to refuse if they choose to. Parents can
also withdraw their child from the screening programme by contacting the school and
requesting that they do not participate. We want to identify any health needs that
students may have so that we can support families in providing services to meet them,
and to ensure that students are in class ready and able to learn.
This is a Ministry of Health led initiative. For more information please contact Whaea Annette at the school on 09 404 1055
Every year we celebrate the top
academic students in NCEA Level 1 and
2. This process cannot be completed
until after the external examination
results are received by the school in late
January of the following year. We are
proud to present to you our two top
academic award recipients for 2017. LEFT: Ngawaiora Davis was the
winner of the Keith McKenzie Cup an
Scholarship for 2017 Level 1 Top
Academic with Excellence Endorsement. RIGHT: Jessie Henwood was the winner
of the BOI College Mecca Reunion Cup
and Scholarship for 2017 Level 2 Top
Academic with Excellence Endorsement.
Congratulations to them both.
Once Ngawaiora graduates from College
she would like to take a year off to travel
and then she hopes to study medicine at
Otago University. When Jessie graduates
as a Year 13 student at the end of 2018
she hopes to study Earth Science at
Waikato University with aspirations of
becoming a Research Scientist. We wish
them both well with their future studies.
NCEA Level 1 with Merit Endorsement students for 2017 were: Jazmine Bailey, Antz Maddren, Jada Henare, Jean Brown, Helena
Richardson, Danika Holland, Brianna Makene-Dodd, Reef Churches, Alecia Norman, Mihi Koperu, Whitiora Haunui-Tipene, Shane Vincent and Caylah Willoughby. NCEA Level 1 with Excellence Endorsement students for 2017 were: Jade Norman, Teariki Hotere-

Congratulations to these students!
Bruce Brown, picture above, completed a Gateway placement with
Hikurangi based Rouse Motorcycles when he was a Year 11 student in
2015. Bruce then went on to do a Taratahi Agricultural Course with Mr
Work. In 2017 Bruce completed a Taratahi Agricultural Course again, one
day a week for the full year.
Bruce comes from a farming background and he would take his
motorcycle and quad to Rouse Motorcycles to be serviced or repaired.
This kept him in touch with the staff there so when an apprenticeship
became available they offered it to Bruce, which he gladly accepted.
Well Done Bruce
Sam-Ross Vincent, pictured above, completed a
Gateway placement with Seapower, based at the Opua
Marina, during his 2017 year. Showing an aptitude for
this type of work along with great enthusiasm and work
ethic Bruce and Christine Fuller offered Sam-Ross work
through the summer holidays. Once again impressed
with Sam-Ross’s efforts they offered him an
apprenticeship as a Marine Engineer. Congratulations
to Sam-Ross and also to Bruce Brown (right) on securing
a trade to hold them in good steed for their future.

Our Year 9 and 10 students have jumped into their Art classes with
great enthusiasm, producing some fantastic prints as per the
sample of the great work shown here.
All the artwork is currently being displayed in our school foyer so
please pop in and have a look at your students creative work.
ERIN MCNAMARA: I've
come back to live in NZ
after 20 years, mostly
teaching in Bangkok and
Tokyo, but also travelling
in many countries. I last
taught in NZ at Waihi
College, but I'm thrilled to
be back at Bay College
where I went to school; it's
great to be teaching the
children (and grandchil-
dren) of so many friends in
the community. I hope to
be walking the cycle
tracks, swimming down at
Paihia and pretty much
enjoying the fresh air of
the Bay of Islands.
C H A Y S E B E N N E T T -
SIMEON: I am the Academic
Mentor here at Bay of Islands
College. My role is to help
the Level 1, 2 and 3 students
get their NCEA qualifications.
I have been working at Bay
Collee since last year and
have loved every minute of
working with the teachers,
community and the students.
Some of my favourite things
to do is, playing various
sports like golf, volleyball
and badminton, serenading
people with my tenor
saxophone and relaxing to
jazz music.
ROBERT HEAPS : Kia ora, I am very
happy to be working at Bay of
Islands College as a Teacher Aide.
Prior to working at the college I
was raised in Wellington & have
primarily taught diving and surfing
there & in other places across the
globe. In Northland, I also love
diving and surfing but most of all I
enjoy living alongside the happy,
warm and friendly communities
that exist up here. Throughout
2018 at the College, I will
continuously push myself to grow
and help others as much as I can
while completing the final year of
my B.A majoring in Educational
Psychology.
KATHY BOSWELL: I decided I
need warm people and a warm
climate. To me the Far North
was the obvious choice. I have
taught Science, Biology and
Maths and to a limited extent PE
for many years. I taught for 3
years in Australia, Maths and PE,
and mainly Science, Biology and
in Maths in NZ. This included
teaching at Ngata College in
Ruatoria, Hawarden Area
School, in North Canterbury and
the last school was Manurewa
High School in South Auckland.
My hobbies are swimming and
fishing and eating seafood. My
other passion is horses. Thank
you to the staff for your warm
welcome and support.
TIERE TAPENE-MAOTE: Kia
orana koutou katoatoa. My
n a m e i s T i e r e
Tapene-Maoate and I am
currently relieving in the
English Department at Te Kura
Tuarua o Peowhairangi. I am
o f R aro tong an/T ahi t ia n
descent, wife, mother of 4
adult children and nana to
one. I am passionate about
my profession and dabble in
cuisine, fashion and culture
when in my 'Me' moments. I
am excited to be living and
working in this community
and hope to get to meet as
many of you during my time
here. Nga mihi.
RON VIGIL: Hi my name is Ronoel
but everybody calls me Ron. I am a
New Zealand trained teacher from
Victoria University in Wellington. I
am bilingual with experience in
primary to secondary level
education. I am a person who
understands the importance of
EOTC experiences for our tamariki
as part of a holistic learning
through positive discipline and
intrinsic motivation in their school
education. I am a strong supporter
of the use of technology in
education and as a complementary
tool in extracurricular activities. I love all sort of sports from BMX to
scuba diving. I play football for a
local team (Kaeo). I enjoy
technology and arts very much. I
like developing new ideas and
researching about everything. I’ve
been teaching ICT, and
Technology related subjects for the
last 3 and a half years.
HORAHIA KING:
I am a Teacher Aide in the
Learning Support Centre,
offering extra support and
help for those students who
need it. I was a past student
here at Bay of Islands
College and I live in
Waikare. It is really great to
come back to Bay College to
give back some of the
knowledge that I gained as a
student. My favourite thing to
do in my spare time is to
spend time with my little girl
Amaya.
E U G E N E R E I H A N A :
Kia ora koutu I am the new
Gateway Driver here at Bay

Australia. I have worked in
many and various industries
and hope to bring the skills I
have learned through out my
working life to my role here at
Bay College. I am very keen
and look forward to working
with our youth.
We wish to take this
opportunity to thank
all our senior leaders
for stepping forward
to be role models and
ambassadors of Bay of
Islands College. We
appreciate their
commitment to their
role as Senior Leaders
and look forward to
seeing their successes
during their 2018 year
