Welcome Back
I hope that everyone had a well rested term break and are all
ready for the exciting events happening this term! If you have a look at
the Dates to Remember section, it is packed. Make sure you mark
these dates in your diary, you won’t want to miss a thing. Otherwise
come into the office area and check out the new community calendar.
This term we will participate in ; our Chinese Cultural Day deliv-
ered by Serena, Shane and Jennifer, sending campers away to Rum-
bug for 3 days, putting on our best smile for school photos, building and
testing your entries ready for the Lardner Cup, a visit to Mt Worth,
whole school swimming program, transition days, the ever impressive
(so I have been told) Night Market, Grade 6 Graduation and for the sen-
iors their end of year disco.
I must take this time to thank everyone who has made my first
week at Lardner & District Primary School a fantastic experience. The
staff have been amazing! From the questions (some of them bound to
be silly) that I have asked, to helping me understand how the school
runs, thank you. Lardner & District Primary School are very lucky to
have such competent and wonderful staff.
To the parent community who have taken the time to say hello during
my previous visits and during my first week, thank you. The community
feel that has been created at Lardner defiantly makes it a lovely place
to be.
Regards,
Ruth Crawford
Don’t forget: HATS ARE BACK
Remember wide brimmed hats must be worn at school during Term 4. If your child
hasn’t got a hat they will need to be under the deck during recess and lunchtime.
WELCOME Everyone at Lardner & District Primary School would like to
welcome Ruth to our school as Acting Principal for a very
busy 4th Term.

Senior Room News
Welcome back to Term 4! Looking at the calendar, it is a jam-packed term full of events such as Grade 6
graduation, transition days, camps, swimming, disco and the list goes on and on!
More information to come on these exciting events.
Several students head off to Camp Rumbug during Week 3- don’t forget to return
any medical/permission forms if your child is attending and you haven’t already
finalised this. Those students staying behind from 3-6 will be in my classroom for
the three days.
In our Writer’s Workshop this term our main genre will be procedural texts. Students have begun
reading procedural texts such as recipes, instructions on craft activities and how to build things to familiarise themselves with
the structure and language features.
In Maths we will cover topics this term on location and position, chance and data, as well as revising the years’ learning. In
number groups we look at fractions, money and continue work on the four operations.
In inquiry the senior room has an exciting project this term- Enterprise. This will culminate in a Market Night during week 9
where the students will be running a market stall business to fundraise money for the school. Students will be learning about
business partnerships, advertising and market research and will become more financially literate throughout the unit of work.
As well, students will be learning about transport to support the Science Program around this topic.
Homework will continue throughout this term- by now students should be familiar with the expectations and be organising
themselves to do the work. Reading diaries will be checked every Friday, they do need to be signed each week by a parent to
verify reading nights even for independent readers.
If you any questions or queries please come and see me.
Kind regards,
Laura Castello
MIDDLE ROOM NEWS
Welcome back to the last term of 2014. We hope you had a lovely break and ready for a FULL ON Term 4!
All the students have returned with great enthusiasm and are excited about our Integrated/Inquiry Units of Transport and the
Enterprise Market.
In the past week we have commenced discussion on possible Enterprise Market ideas and the students have come up with so
many awesome ideas, so now we have the process of deciding which ones to do.
Frogs in the Pond is a definite Enterprise Market idea and we have already made some and taste tested the yummy flavours. We
were then able to work out how many Frog Ponds we can make out of a packet of Jelly Crystals and how much it will cost us to
make one. We have had discussions about how much we should charge and what profit we may make….of course they want to
charge a lot so they make a HUGE PROFIT!!!!! So I think we have lots of work and discussions before making decisions.
Homework will remain the same this term, nightly reading written into the Reading Diary and returned daily. Math and English
tasks given out on a Friday and are due in on the following Wednesday. The students enjoy ‘Golden Time’ which is a reward
given on a Wednesday for those students who have completed and handed in their homework. For those students who haven’t
completed their homework or left it at home they use Golden Time to catch up. The Homework Reward this term is a “WATER
FIGHT!!!!!”
We will be concentrating on Procedural/Instructional writing this term so it would be wonderful if your child could see this in
their own environment, eg: recipes, instructions, directions, rules for games, manuals, etc
Time seems to be tricky for many students so we are covering this again. Your child needs to be encouraged to read the clocks
in your home, both analogue and digital. It is important that they see both types of clocks and can read both as we say them dif-
ferently, ¼ past 5 can also be said as four fifteen. The Grade 2’s need to be revising o’clock, ½ past, ¼ past and ¼ to while the
Gr 3’s need to be able to read analogue clocks to the 5 minutes.
We will continue the “Timetable Challenge” during Term 4. The Gr 2’s are working at consolidating 2’s,3’s,5’s and 10’s while
the Gr 3’s are working at consolidating 2’s,3’s,4’s,5’s, and 10’s. Each Friday they can be tested on a times table and if the get
100% they receive a star to add to their chart. Please make asking some timetables part of everyday.
If your child is attending camp please ensure that all forms are returned to school.
Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
Regards, Janice and Karyn
BOOK CLUB is attached. Orders and
money are due back no later than
Thursday, 23rd October.
Junior Primary Junior Primary have returned to school ready to learn and have hit the ground running. This week we have commenced
our inquiry unit Transport. Students will investigate and answer questions such as What is transport? Why do we need it?
How does transport affect my life?, What makes a transport system? How does the system help us? How do the features
and models of transport make it suitable for different purposes? How does transport cause problems for people and the
environment? and How can I be a responsible transport user? The unit will develop student’s design, creative and tech-
nical skills. This is important as people need to use creative, imaginative and inventive thinking to help them meets hu-
man needs and wants. This week they explored early transport. They designed and made a cart suitable for pulling by a
beast of burden. Over the term they will explore land, water and air transport and the features that make them suited to
different purposes.
Science
Indy Tame, Ben Hansford and Timothy McDonald repre-
sented our school at the presentation to listen to General
Charles Duke speak about his experiences as an astronaut.
He also spoke about the importance of being open to new
opportunities and perseverance o achieve your goals.
Thank you to St Pauls Anglican Grammar School for provid-
ing this wonderful opportunity. We hope to soon have a
DVD of the presentation to share with the rest of the
school.
English, Maths and Science Learning
This week students have explored the features of proce-
dural texts. They have used their growing knowledge to
make popcorn and then sequenced pictures or written a
procedure that others could follow. In maths, students
investigated the different ways they come to school and
then used this knowledge to construct a column graph
to represent their findings. They discussed reasons for
the car and bus being the only forms of transport used by
our class and identified reasons such as distance and ter-
rain not making it suitable for walking and bikeriding and
their own age and the lack of services such as trains lim-
iting the options available. In Science we began by inves-
tigating the ways our bodies can move.
Wheels needed.
Do you have wheels from prams, rollerskates or boards
car tyres etc that we can borrow? We require them on
Monday 13 October for inquiry learning. Please bring
to the junior primary classroom.
Many thanks Vanessa Castle
Lara worked hard to
problem solve how to
attach wheels that
would rotate but not fall
off. Here is the finished
cart.
Linc made a cart
for his kangaroo
to ride in.

A great opportunity exists to build stronger connections between the school and parents. The school’s strategic plan involves creating pathways for parent engage-ment. With the support of school council we would like to invite you to a parent and community meeting to get your great ideas and input into setting up a Parent Action Group.
Our first meeting will be held on Thursday, 16 October in the staffroom from 2-3.25pm.
Everyone is welcome, afternoon tea will be provided. Toddlers are welcome, toys will be provided!
If you can’t come to this meeting we would still love to hear from you! You can speak to Emma Hughes on 0422394330 or Kim Musgrove 0411248251.
