Dear Parents & Carers,
2016 ICAS SCIENCE COMPETITION RESULTS I am delighted to congratulate 22 courageous students from NASS for volunteering to participate in the ICAS SCIENCE Competition last term. ICAS are developed for students in Years 2-12 and are sat annually. Each ICAS test is designed to assess students’ academic ability in aspects of Computer Skills, English, Maths, Science, Spelling and Writing. The Science test included questions assessing Observing /Measuring, Interpreting, Predicting/Concluding, Investigating and Reasoning/Problem Solving. Congratulations to the following students on their great efforts and results. We are VERY PROUD OF ALL OF YOU for having a go!
PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEW (5 - 16 SEP) The online bookings opened on Monday and will remain open until Friday 2 September. Please get in early and make your online bookings by going to: https://www.schoolinterviews.com.au/ and typing in the code: 6cnqn (see Parent/Teacher Interviews News Item on the school website for further details). WEEK 5 & 6 BEHAVIOUR FOCUS This week our students will be learning about BEING A LEARNER WHEN ON EXCURSIONS AND CAMPS. We do this by:
Listening Involving myself in the learning Looking after my belongings
Many thanks for your assistance in reinforcing these messages at home. NASS CELEBRATES BOOK WEEK (TUESDAY 23 AUGUST) Students are encouraged to come to school on Tuesday 23 August, dressed as their favourite character from a book. We will start the day with our Book Week Parade, which will be at 9:00am in the Hall. All welcome! LUNCHTIME SURVEY Many thanks to all those who have already completed the survey regarding how NASS ‘does’ lunchbreaks. The survey was emailed to all families last week and will remain open until Monday 22 August, so it’s not too late to take 5 minutes to complete it and have your say! Click on this link to access the NASS Lunchtime Survey. Students from Years. 3-6 will have the opportunity to complete the survey at school also. SCOPE IT CODING OPEN DAY (YEARS 3-6) As a result of our school’s fantastic fundraising efforts for the ‘Give Me Five For Kids’ charity recently, our school raised the 2nd highest amount of money for the charity, per capita. The prize for 2nd place is a Coding Open Day, which will be held at our school this Friday (19 August). The prize is offered to all Years 3-6 students and will be presented by SCOPE IT, to provide these students with an introductory experience of Coding. As NASS is ahead of most other schools, we already have 50 of our Years 3-6 students who have been learning Coding all year, so these students will be grouped together for the SCOPE IT day, and will receive a more advanced Coding lesson. This promises to be another amazing learning opportunity provided for the NASS students! SCHOOL AND CLASS NOTES HOME TO PARENTS Due to the increasing number of parents who are reporting that they are not receiving the notes which have been sent home from the school (via the eldest child in each family at NASS), at the P&C Meeting last week, it was decided to trial sending the notes home from school with the YOUNGEST child in each family. This new procedure will commence immediately, so please ensure you check your youngest child’s bags for any future school correspondence.
This is not a new idea, many schools have already made this change and do find that on the whole, it is more effective. Regards,
Kelly

The Community Stage will come to life at 11:30am with several performances and presentations. At 1:30pm Yandina State School concert band will take the stage, followed by stars of North Arm Marimbas at 1:50pm. This year, our Grade 2/3 Marimba Band will present 3 songs during the Extension Band set. At 2:45pm our rock band, The Funky Monkeys will perform, followed at 3:30pm by North Arm Strings. Don't miss the two final acts on the Community Stage - String Fusion Rock Group and Jason Daniels.

TUCKSHOP NEWS with Lisa Mitchell - DESPERATELY NEEDING HELP!!! We desperately need help with the following three Fridays. Can you spare some minutes or a few hours? Please see Lisa in the Tuckshop or call her on 0415 717 309 SPORT NEWS with John Mckie Well done to all students who represented North Arm State School at the Nambour District Athletics Trials last Wednesday. All students should be very proud of their efforts, and behaviour throughout the day. A special mention must go to Harriet McG who placed 3rd in the 10yrs Girls 800m, Jordan T who placed 2nd in the 10yrs Boys High Jump, and Jett P who placed 1st and 2nd respectively in the 10yrs Boys 100m and & 200m. These students will now represent Nambour District at the Regional Trials on the 1st & 2nd of September. Connor S finished 3rd in the 11yrs Boys Discus but narrowly missed selection due to the required qualifying distance. ICAS MATHS—Challenged by Numbers, Shape and Algebra!
“Some of the questions were quite challenging and it took a while to work them out”. – Mia “It was good, however there were shape questions which I found challenging, especially question number 34”. – Molly “Challenging in parts and mildly difficult in other areas”. – Rafferty
The above students’ comments were echoed by many of the other pupils who sat the final ICAS Mathematics test in the hall on Tuesday, 16 August.
Overall the ICAS tests have been welcomed by the majority of students, and this Tuesday’s test was no exception. Congratulations to all 91 students for the high level of persistence and positivity displayed during the testing period. With such a large number of students completing the ICAS Mathematics test, some students registered to sit the test were absent. Of course, these students will be given the opportunity to complete the test on another day.
Thank you to everyone for your support with ICAS. We now look forward to receiving individual feedback regarding our test results.
Vickie Jaenke, ICAS Co-Ordinator P&C FUNDRAISER:THE GREAT COIN RACE Many thanks to all families who have supported The Great Coin Race by sending in their loose change. The money boxes are filling, so please keep it coming in! ABSENTEES
Please remember to call our School Absentee Line 5472 9860 or email [email protected] if your child is away from school for any reason. It is a very time consuming job to send out letters to parents who have not advised us of their child’s absence (60 letters last week alone) and also time consuming for parents to try to remember why their child was absent, fill in the form and send it back to school. We would really appreciate your assistance with this issue as it is compulsory for your child to attend school every day. LOST PROPERTY We still have a MOUNTAIN (thousands of dollars worth) of lost property on the tables outside the OSHC room. We are slowly working our way through to return all named property to its owners, but there are a great deal of un-named items. These un-named and un-claimed uniform items are being washed and taken to the Uniform Shop to sell as 2nd hand uniforms. Un-named and un-claimed other items (e.g. lunchboxes and drink bottles) will be donated to charity, so please ensure you come to claim your missing items before they are donated to charity.
