Whole school writing focus update Our vision - To engage students in frequent and varied writing practices that enable them to become deep thinkers and confident, flexible writers.

This term we are continuing to expand the Writing to learn strategies used in our classrooms.

At recent Professional Learning Team (PLT) meetings staff explored how to use Thinker’s keys

and other thinking tools to further encourage our students to reflect on their learning.

What are the Thinker’s keys? The Thinkers Keys are a range of questions/task starters developed by Tony Ryan to engage

and motivate learners in a range of divergent thinking tasks that broaden and deepen their

thinking. They are presented as keys to unlocking the analytical, critical and creative

thinking abilities of learners.

Why encourage creative thinking? 1. Creative thinking can be exciting and enjoyable. Active participation can then create a positive attitude towards the

learning process.

2. The stimulation of creativity in learning heightens the emotional link with that learning. This emotional involvement

boosts the effectiveness of our memory systems.

3. Developing our creative potential strengthens our ability to cope with change. If there is one thing that we can

guarantee into the 21st century, it will be the exponential rate of change. When our thinking is opened and accepting of

new ideas, we become much more capable of adapting to changing circumstances.

Some of the Thinker’s keys we are using to encourage and support thinking ‘outside of

the box’:

The Reverse key- Challenges learners to think of the never, cannot

The What If key - A what if question, come up with solutions

The Disadvantages key - List disadvantages and Improvements

The Combination key - List attributes of both, then combine

The Alphabet key - Come up with something for each letter of the Alphabet

The B A R key - Bigger, Add, Replace acronym. Come up with a solution for each The Variations key - How

many ways can you…

The Picture key - Draw a picture/diagram

The Prediction key - Make a prediction

The Different Use keys- Find 10 different uses for…

The Commonality key - Find common points between…

The Question key - Come up with 5 questions for…

The Brainstorming key - Brainstorm solutions for…

Bastow Institute of Educational Leadership - Leading Literacy Course Update

Congratulations to LaShay Tricker, Nicole Heber and Kiley Cunningham for successfully completing the 2016

Leading Literacy Course. The course ran over the whole year, involved over 80 hours of professional

development, provided opportunities to liaise with other Primary and Secondary schools across Gippsland

and required a final presentation of a literacy initiative implemented at a school level. We would like to

thank LaShay, Nicole and Kiley for their enthusiasm, commitment and continued support to improve writing

at our college. We look forward to the new learning to come.

Science L.E.A.P Excursion to Fed University

On the 11th of November, 40 Year 7 students travelled to Fed Uni to investigate Food, Science and Careers. In the first

session students were Food Technologists and tested the smell, texture, pH and bacterial content of yoghurt. They had to

decide which yoghurt was or wasn’t fit for human consumption. The second session students were Agronomists and tested

the sugar content of different fruits and vegetables. Students were surprised to find out that grapes had the highest sugar

content out of all of the fruits tested. Students also investigated corn that was kept in different conditions and learnt why

frozen corn has less sugar in it than fresh corn. The third session students explored Science as Communicators. They learnt

about how to see through glossy ads which claim they are scientifically tested.

Students were very well behaved and a credit to our school! A big thankyou to Mrs. Lambert, who put in a huge effort to

organise the excursion for us and Tim Wallace, who assisted us on the day.

This term 15 students from Year 9 and 10 attended an Experience the Lab tour of facilities at Monash University and CSIRO

in Melbourne. The program was sponsored by veski and the students were able to see new and exciting technology in exclusive

laboratories including the:

Flexible Electronics lab where scientists are printing solar panels onto all sorts of flexible materials

Instrumentation, Design and Technology Facility where engineers use design packages to plan and make

instrumentation used for research within Monash University

3D printing workshop the home of the 3D printed titanium sternum and rib implant recently used in a world first

surgery

Monash Immersive Visualisation Platform cave2: the next generation hybrid 2D and 3D virtual reality where

scientists can “get inside” 3D images to help solve complex problems.

Four schools attended the tours and students were able to see some amazing new technology. The tour was well received by the students with many loving the cave2. We were able to take a 3D tour of Mars using the

images from the Rover and other NASA images.

Thanks to veski for sponsoring yet another fantastic science event for our students and Helen Watts and Bruce Draper for

attending and supporting our students.

Boys Hockey

A very inexperienced, but enthusiastic Maffra SC Year 7 boys hockey team headed down to Drouin recently to compete in

the Gippsland round of the schools competition.

They fronted a slightly more experienced Lowanna College, who had reportedly played a game or two against some strong

opposition. The Maffra side showed early skill, defending a number of penalty corners before regaining possession of the ball and

controlling it in the forward line. It wasn’t too long to wait before the boys were able to put the ball in the back of the net.

From this point, the game see-sawed, with Lowanna scoring some skilful goals. With 10 minutes to go, Maffra was up 3-2

but Lowanna were fighting back hard. The boys rallied with some excellent mid-field defence, cutting off passes and

displaying strong tackling technique to hold on to win the Gippsland Region round! Our next stop is the State Finals in

Footscray on the 17th of November.

Our Duke of Ed team re-packed their bags and headed back out into the wilderness to complete the Expeditions

component of their award recently. Unfortunately our hike through the Alpine region had to be cancelled due to a

dangerous weather forecast, but the team showed a positive attitude to prepare for an alternative hike along the Mitchell

River to the Den of Nargun.

Each participant had reflected on our previous hike and made some changes to their equipment, which was evident from

the beginning. Everyone was well prepared, and the pace was significantly quicker as we journeyed between Angusvale and

Billy Goat Bend where we rested for the night.

We finished our hot and sweaty walk at lunch

the following day, stopping to take in the Den

of Nargun, where the students took an

interest in the local history and demonstrated

respect for the significance of this place to the

local Aboriginal population.

The team is now finalising their records so

they can complete their Bronze Award. This is

a significant achievement as it is a six month

commitment to achieve the requirements of

the award.

We have another fundraising BBQ scheduled

for the 22nd of November at Woolworths in

Maffra. Please come along and buy a sausage to

help raise funds for Animal Aid.

CANTEEN ROSTER - TERM

CAN YOU ASSIST IN THE CANTEEN?

Our canteen operates at recess and lunchtime. We offer a healthy selection of food in accordance with the Victorian

Canteen Association. If you can volunteer your time, just one day a month, we would be most grateful. Our canteen cannot

operate efficiently without the assistance of our canteen volunteers.

If you are able to help out please phone the School on 51471790 and ask for Tracey in the Canteen. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated. If you are unable to assist on your rostered day can you please find a replacement or

swap for that day. Alternatively please give Tracey at least a days notice to find a replacement.

The Canteen is open between 8-15am and 9am for lunch orders and student purchases before school.
