our rootS: a hiStory of Chapleau
Europeans first migrated to the Chapleau area in 1777 to work for the hudson’s Bay Company which had established a fur trading post about 80 km north of Chapleau on Big Missinaibi lake. a century later, Chapleau, like many of its neighbours in the northeast Superior region, was established around the Canadian Pacific Railway. The railway was built through Chapleau in 1885, and brought with it prospectors, hunters, and trappers. By 1925, the success of the fur trade had noticeably depleted wildlife in the area, and in order to prevent this

proud of our growth
Chapleau prides itself in being a pro-gressive northern community, and is always searching for new ways to grow and provide the best possible quality of life for its residents. the community is home to the first Canadian independent wood-fired cogeneration plant, which
uses sawmill residues to create energy. the energy from this plant is delivered back into the provincial power grid. low cost cogenerated heat is available for lumber drying, and as a result, the Chapleau tembec mill is one of the most efficient mills in the Tembec system.
upcoming projects in Chapleau include the construction of a Canada yew processing facility. Canada yew foliage contains high taxane concentra-tions, and is the main source of the chemical paclitaxel, which is used in chemotherapy treatment. Chapleau was chosen as the site for this facility based on its central location within the yew harvest regions, key transportation links, industrial infrastructure, and the support from the local community in favour of the initiative.
