MINISTRY TO PRESENT May 1969 to August 1978

After graduation from Baptist Bible College

in 1969, Joe and Sherran moved to

Greenville, Texas to work with Jerry Byars at

the Lamar Baptist Church as a missionary

intern. He directed the bus ministry and

taught a young married Sunday school class.

They were with Pastor Byars for 14 months.

Pastor M. O. Garner asked them to return to

Amarillo, Texas to work with Grace Baptist

Church. They were on the staff for 10

months. Floyd Paschal told them of the need

in New England of starting churches. He had

a real burden for Augusta, Maine. Pastor

Ken Armstrong was moving to Brockton,

Massachusetts and invited Joe and Sherran

moved with them and worked with him for

about a year. Joe had to work at a secular job

to care for his family. In the summer of

1972, Joe and Sherran moved to Augusta,

Maine to start the Fellowship Baptist Church.

They were in Augusta for six years and the

Lord blessed their ministry. The church was

started with 21 in the first service. Property

was bought and a building seating 250 was

constructed. When they resigned to apply to

be missionaries with Baptist Bible

Fellowship, the attendance was averaging

180 in Sunday School.

MISSIONARIES TO BRAZIL In the summer of 1978 they moved with their

four children to Springfield, Missouri to seek

approval of the Baptist Bible Fellowship to

go to Brazil. They met all the requirements

and were approved as missionaries to Brazil

at the Kansas City Baptist Temple, Kansas

City, Missouri during the September national

fellowship meeting. They traveled to the

churches of the Baptist Bible Fellowship to

raise the needed financial support to go to

Brazil. They were invited to go out of the South Austin Baptist Church in Austin, Texas, by Pastor Bill Sparks. They left for the field of Brazil in the summer of 1981 with a two year temporary visa. While learning the language, Joe took on the responsibility of a Brazilian church and had to read his sermons word for word. They worked in that church for the entire first term. On their second term they were able to start a self supporting church and turned it over to a Brazilian Pastor. Under his leadership, the church has grown to an average of 300. In March of 1989, they had to make a very difficult decision. They had to return to the States for their youngest daughter to finish High School because of the expenses of schooling in Brazil. During this short time, Joe worked on the staff of Southwest Baptist Church in Amarillo, Texas with Pastor Alan Ford. In May 1990 they were reinstated as missionaries to Brazil. They established a new church in São Gonçalo, Rio de Janeiro. They worked with that church for 7 years un-til could call a pastor. We built a new building and are averaging 120. Many souls have been saved. We turned that church over to national pastor and it is completely self supporting. We started a Bible Institute to train workers for the ministry. We had 6 graduates in our first graduation. One of the graduates has started a new church, another one went to Southern Brazil as a missionary. We moved to Teresópolis, Rio de Janeiro to start a new work. We bought property of 2,300 square meters and built a building that will seat about 150. We have a house on the property for the pastor to live in. One of our graduates and his family is work-ing with us until he gets experience and then the church will be turned over to him. Lord willing it will become a self supporting church.
