Headline: Let’s study in America

Substance: The U.S. Consul General Thomas Vajda shared the U.S. Government’s Open Doors report with the

media in Mumbai. He highlighted the consular section’s information sessions on the student visa process to

schools and students across the five states. "U.S. students coming to India to study for academic credit increased

by five per cent to 4,583 this year, making it the 12th leading destination for U.S. study abroad," said Vajda.

However, the numbers of U.S. students travelling to India has not increased significantly over the last few

years. Vajda added students from the U.S. take into account a lot of aspects before moving to other countries,

including programs, issues of housing.

Substance: The total number of Indian students studying in the U.S. shot up 28% to 1,34,292 students,

comprising the second largest foreign student body in America. The findings of the latest Open Doors Report

(published by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement of the Department of Homeland Security) were

analyzed for the media by the U.S. Consul General Thomas Vajda in Mumbai. He credited the positive trends to

the growing bilateral relations between the U.S. and India.

Substance: “Registering an unprecedented growth of nearly 30 per cent last year, a record 132,888 Indian

students are now studying in the U.S., making an estimated contribution of more than $3.6 billion to the

American economy,” Tom Vajda, Consul General of U.S. Consulate-Mumbai discussed the 2015 “Open Doors

Report” on International Educational Exchange . "We have had the highest number of visa applications,

including students' visas, from the western region." Mike Evans, visa section chief, added. In the last one year,

there has been a 89 per cent rise in the visa applications. Texas, California, New York, Illinois and

Massachusetts are the top five States to host Indian students in America. The newspaper also mentioned that

there is no plan to open a visa office in Ahmedabad which would have been a great relief to hundreds of

Gujarati visa applicants.

Heading: 30% jump in number of Indian students in the U.S.

Substance: The number of Indian students heading to the U.S. for higher education recorded a robust jump of

around 29.4 per cent to 132,888 in the 2014/15 academic year, according to a report, beating China in terms of

growth. The U.S. also remained the most preferred destination in higher education for students from not only

India but other countries as well. Approximately 80% of all Indian students in the U.S. are in the fields of

Engineering, Math/Computer Science, and Business. According to the “Open Doors” report, the number of

international students at U.S. colleges and universities had the highest rate of growth in 35 years, increasing by

10 per cent to a record high of 9,74,926 students in 2014/15. The report also found the number of U.S. students

studying abroad rose by 5 per cent in 2013/14.
