We certainly hit the ground running this term with our RSPCA EMU Van teaching children about responsible animal ownership, the Healthy Harold Life Educaon van delivering elements of our Health Curriculum in an engaging way for our students, and all our sporng events, such as the Netball Regional Shield involvement in Rockhampton and the Pioneer Valley Athlecs carnival currently running at Mirani State School. Id like to thank Mrs Single for organising these events which add so much to our childrens experiences at school. The main purpose of all people working and volunteering in schools is to ensure that all children make the best progress they possibly can in their learning, and experiences like those listed above certainly help in this regard. Id like to acknowledge all the hard work teachers undertake on a daily basis, examining evidence of childrens learning, looking for the best next steps for each child, and planning engaging lessons to help every child reach their potenal. As parents, there are a few things you can do, and indeed, are doing, to support us in geng the best outcomes for our children. The main thing parents can do to enhance childrens learning is to make sure their children aend every day. Each term, I email all parents to let you know about your childs aendance rates. Part of the reason is that legally, all parents have to ensure their children aend every day, unless there is an appropriate reason not to, such as a child being too ill to aend, or if they are aending an external educaonal event, such as representave sport, which we cant provide within the school seng. We communicate this informaon through percentages, and I give an indicaon of how likely those childrens learning is being impacted as a result of those percentages. The purpose of seng our aendance target at 95% is purely to encourage all children to aend school as oſten as possible while allowing for unavoidable absences, such as illness, and to ensure children have as much exposure to high- quality teaching as possible. As you can see from the chart below, even reaching our 95% aendance target sll results in quite a lot of lessons being missed over the course of the year: So, you can see how the absences quickly start to impact on childrens learning, and this is our only focus when we communicate with you about aendance. As a school, we also clearly have a responsibility around supporng you with your childrens aendance. I would therefore like to encourage all parents to let us know if there is anything happening in school, such as interpersonal problems with friends, bullying, or anything else which is making your child not want to come in, so that we can help make the school a more inving, welcoming place for your child. We also want to keep you informed about your childs learning in the best manner possible. I have heard informally from parents that our report cards could do with a revamp, and I would like to invite all parents to a second consultaon on my proposal to do exactly that. I will be holding a meeng in our staff room this aſternoon at 5:15pm for any parents who would like to come and have their say about what would make our report cards more effecve. I would like to thank all parents for their connued support in our efforts to get the best outcomes for our children. I look forward to working with you all over the coming term. Principal’s Report— Mr J Feeney

Welcome back to Walkerston State School for Term 3! We certainly hit the ground running this term with our RSPCA EMU Van teaching children about responsible

animal ownership, the Healthy Harold Life Education van delivering elements of our Health Curriculum in an engaging way for our students, and all our sporting events, such as the Netball Regional Shield involvement in Rockhampton and the Pioneer Valley Athletics carnival currently running at Mirani State School. I’d like to thank Mrs Single for organising these events which add so much to our children’s experiences at school.

The main purpose of all people working and volunteering in schools is to ensure that all children make the best progress they possibly can in their learning, and experiences like those listed above certainly help in this regard. I’d like to acknowledge all the hard work teachers undertake on a daily basis, examining evidence of children’s learning, looking for the best next steps for each child, and planning engaging lessons to help every child reach their potential. As parents, there are a few things you can do, and indeed, are doing, to support us in getting the best outcomes for our children.

The main thing parents can do to enhance children’s learning is to make sure their children attend every day. Each term, I email all parents to let you know about your child’s attendance rates. Part of the reason is that legally, all parents have to ensure their children attend every day, unless there is an appropriate reason not to, such as a child being too ill to attend, or if they are attending an external educational event, such as representative sport, which we can’t provide within the school setting. We communicate this information through percentages, and I give an indication of how likely those children’s learning is being impacted as a result of those percentages. The purpose of setting our attendance target at 95% is purely to encourage all children to attend

school as often as possible while allowing for unavoidable absences, such as illness, and to ensure children have as much exposure to high-quality teaching as possible. As you can see from the chart below, even reaching our 95% attendance target still results in quite a lot of lessons being missed over the course of the year:

So, you can see how the absences quickly start to impact on children’s learning, and this is our only focus when we communicate with you about attendance.

As a school, we also clearly have a responsibility around supporting you with your children’s attendance. I would therefore like to encourage all parents to let us know if there is anything happening in school, such as interpersonal problems with friends, bullying, or anything else which is making your child not want to come in, so that we can help make the school a more inviting, welcoming place for your child.

We also want to keep you informed about your child’s learning in the best manner possible. I have heard informally from parents that our report cards could do with a revamp, and I would like to invite all parents to a second consultation on my proposal to do exactly that. I will be holding a meeting in our staff room this afternoon at 5:15pm for any parents who would like to come and have their say about what would make our report cards more effective.

I would like to thank all parents for their continued support in our efforts to get the best outcomes for our children. I look forward to working with you all over the coming term.

Teachers will be supervising students who are participating.

Congratulations to Chelsea Bostock and Chelsea Meigan who recently represented Mackay at the Capricornia trials in Rocky. From these trials, a Capricornia team was chosen to attend the State Touch Competition in Bundaberg in August. Chelsea Meigan was lucky enough to be selected. Good luck Chelsea!

Regional Netball Shield

Students did a great job at the recent

Regional Netball shield competing

against 30 teams from around the

region. They improved on last years

result coming 13th overall which was

a great achievement

especially as there was

no reserves.

Well done girls!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

On Tuesday 24th July Prep, Year 1’s and Year 2’s were thrilled to

attend ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ performance at the MECC. All

students had a great day. Thank you to the P&C for making a contri-

bution towards the ticket price and to Pathways to Performance

who provided the grant to cover the transport costs.
