From The Principal Country Fair Celebrations What a success our Country Fair was last Friday a huge thank you to everyone for attending and of course for volunteering in so many different ways to make this such a great night. Our P&C’s organisation of this event and leadership from our wonderful president Anita and Country Fair Sub Committee was exceptional and should not be underestimated, this event has been a long time in the making. All parents and staff that have worked so hard to ensure the night was a success be assured that your efforts are very much appreciated. The crowd attendance was great so Regan your publicity worked a treat and Mandy’s coordination around our class stalls and overall logistics helped things run smoothly. Our tuckshop helpers led by Gunnar and Kate simply didn’t stop all evening and to those that stayed until the end and helped pack up, or count money I could personally hug you all. Mr Sherwell our school’s officer is now a seasoned campaigner of this event and it is great that he can be relied on to be the last man standing ever year. We had over 100 varied forms of donations from generous parents and businesses and I would like to make special mention of our Fireworks sponsor Bakers Lawyers, certainly a highlight and a great way for the evening to conclude. Our APEX volunteers not only cooked burgers all evening but also organised and operated a successful licensed bar of which we greatly appreciated. On reflection of previous year’s feedback a number of changes were introduced this year which I believe enhanced the experience for all. In particular merging the stalls down on to the oval to unify with the rides created more of a carnival atmosphere, (lights were great thanks Bill Clayton and Ross Hopper). Likewise showcasing our student’s talents, introducing live entertainment and providing hay bale seating proved popular. How talented are Maleny parents, Katie and Adam, Brett and Col! Thank you so much for volunteering your time and providing us with such wonderful entertainment. Our MC Andy Buchanan from Maleny Landscaping Supplies kept the night rolling with the support of Scott Joosten and his audio equipment and fantastic DJ skills. Hopefully you were lucky enough to win a prize in our monster raffle that Vanessa once again this year was able to secure fantastic support for. As our Country Fair is the schools major fundraiser of the year it is important that while providing a fun family event we still ensure it is profitable. This certainly looks to be the case at this stage. A full financial breakdown will be presented at out next P&C meeting in November when our hardworking treasurer Leah has had a chance to draw breath and finalise total costs and incomes. We would welcome all parents to attend our November meeting to provide constructive feedback on all areas of this year’s Country Fair so that we can continue to improve for next year’s event. I was absolutely thrilled to see so many passionate people working together to achieve the same goal that ultimately benefits our school.

There is always room for improvement and certainly we have highlighted the rides component as a major area for improvement in 2016. The quality of the rides certainly was not what we had planned or up to standard. Our P&C executive are currently taking this matter up with the company. We were very disappointed that the rides were not the most positive experience for all and will certainly review this in detail at our next P&C meeting. We welcome parents to attend this meeting to share their ideas.

Thank you once again to all parents especially those of you that put your own lives on hold in the lead up to this event and gave up the day on Friday to help set up. Be assured your efforts were very much appreciated. Daniel Morcombe Walk Please join us this Friday when our whole school will walk down the main street of Maleny as part of raising awareness of child safety. We ask all students to wear red and contribute a gold coin that will be donated to the Daniel Morcombe Foundation. We welcome parents to join us on this walk that will leave school at 9:00am on Friday morning. Classes will focus lessons this week around the key messages or Recognise, React and Report. Please use this initiative to start a conversation in your house around child safety. A good start is to ensure that your child has 5 trusted adults they can list, that they would feel comfortable to talk to if they feel uncomfortable about something that they may experience. World Teacher’s Day We have a great school and that is because we have great teachers. Please let them know this week that their efforts are much appreciated. Every day without fail I see teachers at our school going above and beyond what is expected of them by putting their students first often in very stressful circumstances. I for one very much appreciate the care our teachers show towards our students, the pride they take in our school and the many hours of planning that occurs on a daily basis, every day including weekends and holidays. Friday is World Teacher’s Day so please shine up those apples and encourage your children to do or say something special for their teachers and specialist teachers this week. Music Fest at Iona Good luck to all the members in our combined schools Concert Band that will play at Iona in Brisbane this week. P&C Meeting Our final P&C meeting will be held on Wednesday the 11 of November, please mark this on your calendar as we are always looking for more volunteers to assist make our school great. SWPBS (School Wide Positive Behaviour Support) This week’s Rule: Be Respectful Fortnightly Focus: I’m Great, I Wait. John

From the Deputy Principal Reading

Continuing our theme of exposing you to the many reading strategies that students use when they are trying to understand a text: This fortnight we look at Predicting, before, during and after reading. Predicting is a useful reading strategy as it helps us think about what to expect when we read. What we know already (our prior knowledge) helps us to predict. When we predict we can use the: • title • front and back covers • blurb • pictures or diagrams • table of contents We can think about the: • topic • author • text form – is it a narrative? factual report? recount? Good readers keep making predictions and adjusting them all through their reading. Questions you can use at home to help your child/ren predict as they read include:

What do you think the text will be about? Why do you think that?

What do you predict will happen next?

From what you have read so far, what do you predict will happen next?

From what you already know about… what do you predict…?

What does this picture make you think about?

The style of this author is… what do you think…?

Have you revised any of your predictions?

You thought… but then you have read that… so what do you think…?

Why have you changed your first prediction?

Why was your prediction confirmed?

Was your prediction partly right?

What did you assume? Was your assumption accurate?

WRITING - Our whole school writing focus for the next two weeks is called:

Students will be using all of the 7 Steps to Writing Success elements learnt so far to make their writing more

interesting. ‘Banning the Boring’ starts at the planning stage so that great ideas are

imagined so that the boring never happens. Then finally, when their piece of writing has

been completed students will edit their writing focussing on making it better and richer.

Don’t Forget World Teacher’s Day this Friday: This Friday October 30th, is World Teacher’s Day, think about doing something special for your teacher. One great idea is to get your child/ren to make a card and write a special note to their teacher telling them the great things they do.

BAN THE BORING

Helping Beginning Readers at Home: Last week I was asked by the Prep teachers to present a workshop for parents on helping Beginning Readers at Home. As part of the presentation I showed a video of me reading with a student, highlighting the things I was doing. Mr Greig is currently in the process of seeing if he can upload this video on our school website, so other parents may wish to watch this for ideas. One of the key points of developing good reading behaviours is to do reading together DAILY and … DON’T PANIC! Most beginning readers are inconsistent. Sometimes a hardcover text won’t excite some students so digital texts may be used instead. Some top websites with digital texts include: http://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/ http://readingeggs.com.au/ http://www.magickeys.com/books/ There are also many digital/audio texts available at the iTunes store for downloading onto iPads/iPhones which students find highly engaging.

Science

We like to move it, move it! The preppies got their bodies moving when we introduced our Science unit this week.

They thought about all the different ways we move and tried out some movements to music. We have photos to

prove how much fun it was!

Transition

This is a busy term for the Preppies as they get ready to transition to Year 1.

Last week, the prep classes visited the Junior Playground to learn the routines and rules. They enjoyed the adventure

playgrounds, sandpit, oval, forest area, and learnt how to borrow from the shed. They also practised using the big

school toilets and bubblers. From this week, each class will have one day a week where they will play in the Junior

playground. Prep A – Thursday, Prep B – Friday, Prep C – Tuesday.

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD BRINGS THEIR HAT TO SCHOOL - NO HAT NO PLAY!

We have also started to welcome our 2016 families with enrolment interviews and transitions days. Some of our

Preps will take on a leadership role at these days and help the new families by showing them around and being

positive role models.

Country Fair

Thank you to everyone for your support for the Country Fair.

Swimming

We are really excited to start swimming again. Remember that swimming is every Monday until the end of term.

Prep A – 9:00 am, Prep B – 9:30 am, Prep C – 10:00 am. Please send children dressed in their swimmers and ready for

swimming. Please also make sure that all clothing is named clearly. Thanks. We look forward to having some parent

helpers to come along. Please write your name on the noticeboard if you can help.

Year 1 classroom news

This term has started with a bang! All students have come back eager to jump back on the learning horse. The children

have been having fun in Drama where they get to showcase their amazing acting skills in portraying emotions in

familiar scenarios. We have been lucky to have some year 11 students from Maleny State High School coming on

Friday afternoons for the next few weeks to run some outside activities. We have already had one session of this and

the children from 1A and 1B absolutely loved it.

As a reminder we have swimming starting Tuesday of week 4 so if the children could come to school with their

swimming gear under their uniform that would ensure we get into the pool quicker. Also, if there are any mums, dads

or grandparents that would be available to volunteer their time during that would be greatly appreciated.

We would like to send a big thank you to the parents who were able to help out before and during the country fair!

The donations were very generous – THANK YOU!

Classroom teachers 1B and 1A Year 2 News What a great start back to the term. We are all excited with the upcoming Country Fair and cannot wait to see the Community come and celebrate with us. In Maths we are well on our way to using Number concepts to complete a range of tasks. In English we are enjoying reading and studying Narratives. In Science we are becoming more aware of our impact on the environment and talking about ways we can save the resources we have now so future generations don’t go without. Our Geography unit is focusing on how we identify our connection to resources that we use: do they come from our local, regional or world scale? We look forward to swimming once again which starts next week. 2A on Tuesday 10:00am and 2B on Wednesday 9:00am. Just a reminder that homework folders need to be returned each day along with readers and Sightword books. Here’s to another busy term with lots of great activities still to come. Mrs Ferguson, Mrs Anthony, Mrs Luck. 3A NEWS

It is that time of year when we reflect on the past three terms and endeavour to finish the final term with continued

improvement both personally and academically.

Last week 3A along with our 5A and 5B Buddy Reading Tutors enjoyed a sing–along with Ms Coogan, one of her

daughters and Mr Steve Schultz (a guitar teacher) on guitars, and the children singing into the microphones in small

groups. The general consensus seemed to be “That was so much fun, let’s do it again!” Of the ten songs we sang, the

favourite seemed to be Que Sera by Justice Crew, it has such wonderful lyrics.

We are looking forward to the Country Fair this Friday

with anticipation and excitement! On Wednesday

next week we start swimming, then on Thursday we

have our History excursion to the Maleny Historical

Village, followed by our walk for Daniel on Friday, plus

all of our regular classroom activities, what a week!

Kind Regards,

Anne Coogan

3 / 4 News

In Science, the students have been learning about heat and how it is produced. Our first experiment was making

bread. We made two loaves of bread and completed an investigation by placing one of our doughs in the sun for half

an hour and the other one was left in the classroom. The students took measurements every half hour and we found

that the one in the sun rose higher, however both doughs became bigger because of the warm water and yeast that

we added initially. Everyone enjoyed the hot bread afterwards, with honey and butter. We have been learning about

how to read thermometers and our latest experiment was heating coins in the sun and seeing if when we added them

to water it would heat the water.

In English we have been learning to write a persuasive article. We have read some Indigenous stories and have had

some very meaningful conversation about the Stolen Generation. The books we are reading at the moment are

focused on relationships and how emotions are expressed. The students are incorporating interesting verbs and

emotive language in their writing to give the reader a vivid picture in their head.

In technology the students have been very busy designing and creating their own desk caddy. They have thoroughly

enjoyed this activity.

Kind Regards

Trish and Lou

GROWTH THROUGH HARDSHIP Time and again I have seen in my own life and in the life of nature, that real growth comes out of hardship and pain. As I look around at the world we live in, no one wants to have to endure hardship and pain, however it is an inevitable experience that each of us have to go through. Some people endure more pain and hardship then seems humanly possible, however in most circumstances the greatest growth in a person’s character, occurs during this time. My dad has been keeping chicken eggs in an incubator and the whole experience has been very exciting for my children. When the chicks finally hatched, and the children were watching, their impulsive response was to want to help them break out of their shells. As they watched those helpless little chicks struggling, it took every ounce of self-control to not reach out and break the egg for them. The thing that stopped them was that they knew that if they did, the chicks would probably die because it was during that ordeal that they gained their strength. The same is true for butterflies. I just want to encourage anyone who is going through that season of hardship and pain to take hope in the midst of it. Everything happens for a reason and nothing is wasted in our lives. Please know that I am here if you ever need to talk. This term is off and running and in a blink it will all be over for the year! Last week I had the privilege of spending the day with the Yr 4’s at Currimundi Recreation Centre. I absolutely loved seeing the children outside of the school setting. We spent the afternoon designing and building kites but sadly I wasn’t able to see them fly. This term I will be doing art and craft, and games with the students. Each year, the Uniting Church has a Christmas Tree Festival and so our students will be creating ornaments to decorate a tree that I will be displaying. Any parents who would like to help me please come and see me with your ideas and skills. Don’t forget to acknowledge your teachers as it is Teacher Appreciation Day on Friday. Have a great week.

Bee Club News

So far this term, students have been doing a great job of following the Four Be’s to earn tickets towards our three Bee Clubs – Be Super (10 tickets), Be Awesome (20 tickets) and Be Epic (30 tickets).

Each week, students trade their Four Be tickets for stamps on their Bee Journey cards (pictured). Students will be rewarded in Week 10 with some fantastic incentives.

Be Epic Club members– water based activities

Be Awesome Club members – movie morning

Be Super Club members– in class rewards

P&C Uniform News P&C Uniform Shop News On behalf of the P&C, we would like to thank our dedicated uniform volunteers for their ongoing help throughout 2015. This year, we would like to say a very special thanks to Wendy Gleeson who, sadly after 4 years as a uniform shop volunteer, will be leaving us at the end of this term. We therefore would like to recruit another volunteer for 2016. The commitment is roughly one hour every 4 weeks. The volunteer would open and staff the uniform shop one Friday out of four from 8.30-9.30am. No experience is needed as training will be provided. It is vital that we have this support to ensure the successful operation of the Uniform Shop. If you would like to know more, give Mandy a call on 0439 003 537. The Uniform Shop is open Friday mornings between 8.30am and 9.30am. Payment options are EFTPOS, cash or cheque at the uniform shop only. Alternatively, orders can be placed online at www.flexischools.com.au by 5pm Wednesday for Friday pickup or class delivery.

P&C Tuckshop News Tuckshop open three days from 2016

At the last P&C meeting it was agreed to reduce the number of tuckshop days to three, starting from Term 1, 2016. The transition of Grade 7 students to high school this year has had a considerable impact on income. Also, with more Grade 6 students leaving this year than prep students starting, as well as our Tuckshop open more days than recommended for a school our size, it was necessary to cut back on hours to be financially viable. We will confirm which days closer. New Friday Special – Hot Dog with cheese - $4.00. Flexi Schools is our preferred ordering system and is simple and easy to use. To register go to www.flexischools.com.au. Can you help at the Tuckshop? – only 3 hours a month. At least 2 volunteers per day are needed to help Tuckshop Convenors Kate and Gunnar. Training is provided and you can do a trial to see if you like it. To find out more, drop by or call Kate or Gunnar at the Tuckshop on 5499 8318 or email Kate - [email protected] . Tuckshop Roster Tuesday, 27 Oct - Katherine M & Kate S Wednesday, 28 Oct - Sally C Thursday, 29 Oct - Helen B Friday, 30 Oct - Aileen J Tuesday, 3 Nov - Jody G Wednesday, 4 Nov - Amanda M Thursday, 5 Nov - Peter M & Marty Friday, 6 Nov - Raquel D & Fran C Tuesday, 10 Nov - Lainie H & Marnie L
