DEL-059 April 5th,2013 Multimedia materials for outreach and education

1. Introduction

GLORIA is a social project with high visual and educational components. The use of social media and web based tools goes together with the production of multimedia material that have the aim to rise the awareness among the public of GLORIA’s capabilities and goals and to build the GLORIA community: partners and users. The multimedia material targets are therefore several: users, educators, professional and amateur astronomers, the general public. The channels we use to make them accessible are the public website (gloria-project.eu), the users' website (users.gloria-project.eu) and the social channels: Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube.

Production of material is a continuos process and will continue for the whole project duration. This document represents then only the first version, with updates foreseen every 6 months. So three more versions are foreseen. In particular we note here that due to the delay of the release of online and offline experiments, as well as of the users' website, some multimedia productions aimed at 1. launching the real opening of the project to the community active participation and 2. start making astronomical observations with the GLORIA telescopes and citizen science via the GLORIA web interface.

The types of material produced so far or foreseen include:

○ Public Website with news and posts about the project activities.

○ Astronomical web tools.

○ Written educational material linked to selected astronomical events.

○ Graphical educational material linked to selected astronomical events.

○ Pictures and time-lapse clips related to selected astronomical event.

○ Video clips advertising astronomical events and GLORIA experiments.

○ Video help tools to provide access to experiments interfaces, the technological and scientific results obtained by the project.

We note also that all (or most of) the material will be available in all the languages of the GLORIA consortium (Spanish, English, Italian, Czech, Russian and Polish) plus French and German. The public website is being updated for these language whereas the users' website will be updated in the next months.

2. Live Events related material

GLORIA has four live astronomical events broadcasting scheduled and more could be added. Related to them there are educational activities for which multimedia material will be produced. They are:

1 2012 Venus Transit – Calculate the Sun-Earth distance by comparing images from Australia and Japan (parallax method, observational sites at the same meridian).

2 2012 Venus Transit – Midnight sun phenomenon. Calculate the latitude of the observation site from images of the Midnight Sun.

3 2012‒2013 Total Solar Eclipses – Relationship between environmental parameters (light flux and temperature) and eclipse timing.

4 2014 Total Lunar Eclipse – Earth shadow size derived from lunar crater timing. Relationship with the hole in the ozone layer (climate change).

5 2014 Total Lunar Eclipse – Archeoastronomy and Inca culture.

6 2014 Total Lunar Eclipse – Teide volcano shadow and eclipsed moon. Around the full moon during moonset shadows of objects (produced by the sun set) point to the

moon. Students will understand the phenomenon seeing, live, the shadow of Mount Teide pointing to eclipsed moon. In the activity we will explain the phenomenon and a method to calculate the height of a mountain from the length of its shadow.

As March 2013, we have organized two additional live events:

– Northern Lights 2012

– Asteroid 2012-D14 transit

2.1. Multimedia production

The list of material produced in relation to the GLORIA selected astronomical events include:

• creation of dedicated multi-language web pages;• creation of editable SVG graphics;• event phenomenon and expedition information (English and Spanish);• event broadcasting information for collaborators (English and Spanish);• production of multi-language educational activity manuals and graphics;• production of a multi-language advertising video;• press-releases;• realization of a multi-language web tool to perform the educational activity;• production of time-lapse videos;• collection of astronomical images;• students and teachers questionnaires (all languages);• Transit of Venus: booklet for the Transit of Venus event in all the GLORIA languages;• Transit of Venus: poster and logo in all the GLORIA languages;• Transit of Venus “Message to the Future” Flickr initiative: a dedicated Flickr photo-album available to the

public to collect photos taken during the two days of the event;• Transit of Venus: how to build a simple and effective pinhole camera (English and Polish).
