Our students have spoken! Each year our students complete an “Attitudes to School Survey”. We have just received the feedback on how our data compares to the rest of the state’s Primary and Secondary schools and we are pleased to report that our students are above the State average in all categories. These are great results to celebrate and we will keep listening to our students so that their positivity about our school continues to

grow.

While NAPLAN results have been shared with the media, we are yet to receive these ourselves due to the high

level analysis tools that come with our data. We look forward to sharing them when we do.

Today we spoke to the Year 11 students about running for College Captain for 2020. We have an excellent cohort of potential leaders in Year 11 and we hope they will consider taking on this important role in our College. An encouraging word from a parent or friend often helps a student bravely put themselves up for election by their peers and staff.

We had great participation in the final “Round Robin” of the year. As always, our students competed in great spirit and sportsmanship. We did very well in Dodgeball, two of our junior teams and one of our intermediate teams went undefeated, unfortunately there is no next level for Dodgeball. Our junior girls’ basketball team was also undefeated but missed on a points count back to progress to the next round. Our impressive intermediate girls’ table tennis team followed up their success from last year and have progressed again to the next round. Thanks to all our coaches for supporting our teams: Anne Nadj, Mark Davies, Naomi Kenner, Phil Kim, Michael

Mawson and Peter Hoornweg. I also enjoyed coaching the Dodgeball.

We have 86 students with an impressive 100% attendance for the term. Remember, every day of learning has a positive effect on

your life.

Year 12’s and their parents are encouraged to meet with Felicity Wilmot, Careers Practitioner for transition, pathway and contingency planning on Wednesday 11th of September during the Student/Parent/Teacher interview evening.

Semester 2 Parent/Student/Teacher Evening

Interviews will take place in the College’s Science Wing, on Wednesday 11th September from

4.30pm – 7.30pm. Parents need to log on to Sentral to book appointment times. There are

instructions outlined in last week’s newsletter on how to do this. An instruction guide can also be

found on the Home page of our College website. Please note that two interview sessions will be

advertised as this semester we are also offering 15 minute interviews with Felicity Wilmot, our Careers Practitioner for

students in Years 9-12.

Each interview has been given a five minute time slot. A bell will ring every five minutes to inform you to move on to

your next interview. We kindly ask that you strictly adhere to your child’s booking times as well as the five minute time

limit, so as to not disrupt the flow of the evening by causing unnecessary queues and delays. If you would like a

lengthier discussion with a staff member, please request and arrange this for an alternate day. Staggering interviews

with a 5 minute gap between individual interviews can be an effective way to assist you to keep to schedule.

Don’t forget that ‘Sentral’ is also a wonderful online website which lists students’ academic and behavioural incidents.

Staff document these incidents on a daily basis, so you can be assured that the information is current and up-to-date.

Students, parents and carers can access this website at any time or place where Internet access is available. If you

want further information on how to access Sentral, please phone the office on 5770-2000.

We are looking forward to seeing as many families as possible on the evening. We greatly value the opportunity to

discuss individuals’ education with them and their parents or carers.

Round Robin Sports

Year 8 Girls Basketball

On Thursday 29th August, nine enthusiastic girls travelled to Benalla to represent the college in Year Eight Girls Basketball. Our team consisted of: Jazmin Collett, Taylah Dean, Mia Fitzpatrick, Eliza Gesler, Annie Howell, Louise Hurrey, Mikaela Krijt, Charlotte Millard and Micci Soriano. This was a great opportunity for many of these very skilled and athletic girls to play competition basketball. Our team captain Eliza, who plays representative basketball was a dominant player and excellent role model. She was very supportive, mentoring those members who were less experienced. Mia, Louise and Taylah all demonstrated outstanding ball handling skills, gained from playing in our local competitions. Jaz and Mikaela made excellent position under the ring to score from rebounds, whilst Annie, Charlotte and Micci put pressure on the ball, stealing at every opportunity. All girls played excellent team games, sharing the ball around and scoring points.

Alexandra won all three games in our pool, defeating Yea 22-2, St Mary’s College 40-2 and Seymour 18-7. This set us up for a final against the Pool A winners, Mansfield. They were a very polished team and we were looking forward to the challenge. Unfortunately, we did not have time to play the final, and as Mansfield had scored more points during their matches, they were declared the winners.

All students demonstrated great sportsmanship and were supportive and respectful of: their teammates, opposition and the referees. I am very proud of all the girls. It was a pleasure to spend the day with them, as they were excellent representatives of our College. I encourage them all to join our local competition to further develop their skills and fitness, and to have fun. The only low light in their day was the fact that they did not get to visit that famous Scottish restaurant. Thank you to Sue Dundas and Jan McDonald for their excellent organisation.

Anne Nadj

The Year 7 and Year 8 Girls Dodgeball had a great day in Seymour with all

teams winning at least one match and two of our teams finishing

undefeated.

Students studied the different patterns that spoked wheels are laced. Students remove all the spokes

from a wheel, sort them and re-spoke in the correct order, tighten correctly and then the more difficult

task of adjusting the spokes to remove any buckle. Many students reduced the buckle to around 1mm,

which for an old farm bike wheel is excellent.

Students start with an easy wheel like a Honda postie bike wheel. Students are challenged with a more

complex motorcycle wheel with 3 or 4 different length spokes due to hubs with different PCD’s

(pitch circle diameter).

For the very keen students they can re-spoke a bicycle wheel, more difficult due to extra spokes and

going to a smaller hub, the spokes are woven like a 3 cross which is over 2 and under 1 for example.

Re-spoking is a great skill to be able to fit a new rim, or a new hub, or replace a set of rusty spokes and

the skill to correct a buckle is not a common skill…….. except in Auto-Weld here at ASC!

LINO PRINTING

Year 8 Art students started by selecting a pattern and then tracing it onto the lino. They selected a chisel and proceeded to cut out their designs. Next they chose paint, rolled it over the lino and then printed the design onto paper or material. Designs were all individual,

creative and a lot of fun.
