Model B Wet Alarm Valve - LPCB Approved
Data Sheet 5.2Issue B
Description
The LPCB / CE marked model B alarm valve is a differential type consisting of a rubber faced cast iron swing clapper and grooved brass seat. The seat is tinned to prevent the rubber clapper facing from sticking. This valvemust be installed vertically in the main supply to a wet pipe sprinkler system.
Operation
When a sprinkler head operates or the inspectors test valve is opened, pressure on the system side of the clapperis reduced below the pressure on the supply side. The clapper then lifts off the grooved seat and permits water flowfrom the supply to enter the system for distribution on the fire. Water now also flows through the uncovered grooveto the alarm device via the optional retard chamber where fitted. A pressure surge or water hammer in the supplyline will increase the pressure on the supply side of the clapper, causing it to lift intermittently which may result in afalse alarm. The model B alarm valve will prevent such false alarms by two features:
a) The external by pass with check valve allows a pressure surge from the supply to by pass the alarmvalve clapper. This will create an excess system pressure and thus steady the clapper.
b) Should a heavy surge unseat the clapper and allow water to flow into the alarm line, the optional model E retard chamber then comes into action. This unit has specially designed inlet and drain orifices which will allow the chamber to partially drain before filling and activating the alarm device. The retard chamber also has a strainer in the intake line to prevent foreign matter from clogging theintake orifice.
Care must be taken when installing the 20mm check valve in the by pass line to be certain that it is located withthe arrow on the body pointing towards the alarm valve.
Maintenance
The model B alarm valve is so constructed that there is nothing to adjust under normal water and operating conditionsand requires very little maintenance. The system pressure gauge should read equal too or higher than the supplypressure gauge. Alarm valves should be regularly examined to ensure reliability. Inspection of the valve should beas follows:
a) Notify the Fire Service, Insurance Provider and other centres requiring notification prior to commencinginspection.
b) Remove any padlocks and straps.c) Close supply stop valve and open main drain valve (item 34, Fig 1).d) Remove front cover (item 3, Fig 2)e) Remove the two clapper pin plugs and hinge pin (items 7 & 9 Fig 3) and clapper assembly (Fig 4)f) Clean thoroughly removing any accumulated deposits. Inspect the valve rubber/clapper facing; if
worn or damaged replace with genuine replacement parts.g) Inspect the clapper seat ring for lodgement of dirt, bruising or scoring. Clean thoroughly. (A damaged
seat ring can be carefully dressed using lapping compound. If the damage is extensive then a complete new valve should be fitted.)
h) Reinstall clapper, hinge pin and front cover.i) Remove swing clapper from 20mm check valve (item 19, Fig 1) on by pass line, and check condition
of clapper and seat. Replace complete unit if damaged.j) When every part is reinstalled close main drain valve and reset valve as per ‘Procedures after a fire’.

Description
The FM approved / UL listed wet alarm valve is a differential type consisting of a rubber faced cast iron swingclapper and grooved brass seat. The seat is tinned to prevent the rubber clapper facing from sticking. This valvemust be installed vertically in the main supply to a wet pipe sprinkler system.
Operation
When a sprinkler head operates, pressure on the system side of the clapper is reduced below the pressure on thesupply side. The clapper then lifts off the grooved seat and permits water flow from the supply to enter the systemfor distribution on the fire. Water now also flows through the uncovered groove to the alarm device via the optionalretard chamber where fitted. A pressure surge or water hammer in the supply line will increase the pressure on thesupply side of the clapper, causing it to lift intermittently which may result in a false alarm. The wet alarm valvewill prevent such false alarms by two features:
a) The external by pass with check valve allows a pressure surge from the supply to by pass the alarmvalve clapper.
Care must be taken when installing check valves in the trim to be certain that they are located with the arrow onthe body pointing in the right direction. The arrow on the body of the 20mm check valve in the by pass line mustpoint towards the alarm valve. The arrow on the body of the 15mm check valve in the drain line from the retardchamber must point towards the main drain.
Maintenance
The wet alarm valve is so that there is nothing to adjust under normal water and operating conditionsand requires very little maintenance. The system pressure gauge should read equal too or higher than the supplypressure gauge. Alarm valves should be regularly examined to ensure reliability. Inspection of the valve should beas follows:
a) Notify the Fire Service, Insurance Provider and other centres requiring notification prior to commencinginspection.
b) Remove any padlocks and straps.c) Close supply stop valve and open main drain valve.d) Remove front cover (item 3, Fig 2).e) Remove the two clapper pin plugs and hinge pin (item 7 & 9, Fig 3) and clapper assembly (Fig 4).f) Clean thoroughly removing any accumulated deposits.
If the damage is extensive then a complete new valve should be fitted.)
h) Reinstall clapper, hinge pin and front cover.i) Remove swing clapper from 20mm check valve on by pass line, and check condition of clapper and
seat. Replace complete unit if damaged.j) When every part is reinstalled close main drain valve and reset valve as per ‘Procedures after a fire’.

a) Cut a hole in the wall to accommodate the 20mm pipe.b) Cut drive shaft housing (item 9) to wall thickness plus 40mm.c) Attach drive shaft housing to bracket (item 13) without removing bolt (item 14), and position this assembly
on the outside wall with the drive shaft housing through the wall.d) Remove the six cover screws (item 6), cover (item 4), cover gasket (item 7), and pelton wheel (item 2) from
theipelton wheel housing (item 1).e) Insert drive shaft (item 8) through the drive shaft housing into engagement with the striker shaft (item 15).f) Cut drive shaft even with the top flange of bearing (item 3) in the pelton wheel housing.g) Insert pelton wheel and rotate by hand to assure proper alignment.h) Attach cover and cover gasket to pelton wheel housing with the six cover screws.
Operation
When, in the case of a fire emergency, the sprinkler system is activated, flowing water enters the Water Motor AlarmGong inlet and strikes the pelton wheel. Rotating in a turbine fashion, the pelton wheel transmits its torque to thestriker assembly which sounds the alarm. The water, after it impinges on the pelton wheel, flows through the drainoutlet in the pelton wheel housing.
Maintenance
a) The 20mm strainer, located in the alarm line from the alarm valve, should be periodically cleaned to ensuresufficient flow to the Water Motor Alarm Gong.
b) The clean out plug (item 5) should be periodically removed to avoid any accumulation of debris and scale that may have passed through the strainer.
c) The inside of the gong (item 11) should be checked periodically for the accumulation of foreign material.

ORDERING Model & Mounting TypeINFORM ATION
SPRINKLER ALARM MODEL - GAHD Sprinkler Alarm is a hydraulically driven mechanicalbell. It does sound a continuous alarm when the sprinklersystem operates. The impeller and drive shaft are energyecient, made from light weight nonmetallic materialand does not require any external lubrication. The gong, protection cover and motor housing are made ofcorrosion resistant aluminium alloy.
OPER ATIONWhen the sprinkler system is activated by the fusing ofone or more automatic sprinklers at re condition thewater ows through the Alarm / Deluge Valve and enterthe sprinkler alarm through the nozzle, creating a highvelocity jet which strikes the impeller causing the driveshaft and the striker arm assembly to rotate. The alarmarm assembly rotate and strikes to impact against thealuminium gong, producing a continuous alarm. The wastewater then drains out through a 25NB drain outlet. Ittakes minimum 0.35 Kg./Sq.Cm. ( 5 PSI ) pressure atthe nozzle to cause an alarm.
DESIGN REQUIREMENTStrainer is required in the Sprinkler Alarm line to protectthe 3.2 mm nozzle in the water motor housing fromclogging.
The alarm line pipe must be 20NB (3/4") size with 22.8
mtrs. (75 feet) maximum total length of pipe withminimum number of ttings. If the length of the pipeexceeds 22.8 mtrs. (75 feet), then higher size pipe mustbe used to reduce hydraulic friction loss. The SprinklerAlarm should not be located more than 1.8 mtrs. (Sixfeet) above Alarm Valve / Deluge Valve.
MAINTENANCEQualied and trained person must commission thesystem. After few initial successful tests an authorisedperson must be trained to perform inspection andtesting of the system.
Even though corrosion resistant material is used in theconstruction of the Sprinkler Alarm, it is suggested thatthe Sprinkler Alarm be examined and tested at regularintervals to ensure that the nozzle is free fromobstruction and the impeller is free to rotate. Theinspection should include the following :
1. Clean 20 NB ( 3/4 ") Strainer provided in the alarmline.
2. Open the 3/8" plug provided on the inlet of theSprinkler Alarm and clean out any accumulatedparticles.
3. Detach the Gong, clean the internal surface and retin proper sequence.
4. Activate the Sprinkler Alarm to verify clear andsteady sound.

DescriptionRapidrop Alarm Valve model C is a double seated clapper check valve with grooved seat design which ensurespositive water flow for alarm operation and is designed forinstallation in wet pipe sprinkler system. Externalbypass prevents false alarm under all supplypressure condition. In the event of variable pressurecondition, false alarm is prevented with theprovision of retard chamber, thus the design allowsfor installation under both variable and constantsupply pressure condition.
Operation of one or more automatic fire sprinklerscauses the water to flow into the sprinkler systemcausing the alarm valve to open, allowing continuousflow of water into the system and transmittal ofalarm, both electrical and mechanical.
OperationThe fire protection system initially when beingpressurized, will allow water to flow into the systemuntil the water supply and system pressure isequalized and the clapper closes the waterway. Oncethe pressure is stabilized, the fire protectionsystem is ready to be placed in service and thenthe alarm control valve must be opened. Undernormal condition, the water pressure gaugeconnected to the system side of the alarm valvewould show a higher or equal pressure reading thanthe water pressure gauge connected to the supplyside of the valve. This occurs because of the bypassline connecting downstream and upstream side ofthe alarm valve, which allows water pressure surgeto pass without lifting the valve clapper off its seat, thereby causing excessive high pressure surgeentrapped in the system side due to presence of acheck valve, which generally prevents false alarm.
Sudden high pressure surge, as might beencountered by the start-up of a large fire pumpmay lead the valve clapper to lift momentarily, allowing water to flow through grooves in the valveseat to the retard chamber. The water in the alarmline is automatically drained out, which helps toprevent false alarm due to successive transientsurge in supply pressure. Restriction assemblylocated beneath the retard chamber consists ofinlet and drain restriction orifices, which areestablished by considering the volume of the retardchamber to meet the l ist ing and approvalrequirement with regard to time-to-alarm. Theserequirements represent a balancing of the need toreduce the possible false alarm due to a transient

surge in supply pressure and to achieve desiredminimum time- to- alarm following a sprinkleroperation.
In constant pressure installation, the retardchamber is not required and the water passingthrough the groove in the alarm valve seat flowsdirectly through restriction nozzle assembly toactivate the mechanical and electrical alarm.
Installation1. Rapidrop Sprinkler alarm valve, Model-C must be
installed vertically.
2. The alarm valve must be installed in a readilyvisible and accessible location and provision tobe made in such a way that alarm line drain isvisible and accessible.
3. Where water pressure fluctuates, the variablepressure trim with retard chamber must beused. Under non-fluctuating water pressurecondition, the constant pressure trim, whichdoes not include retard chamber, may be used.
4. The valve must be installed with trim inaccordance with the trim data. Failure to followthe appropriate trim connection guidelines mayprevent the device from functioning properlyas well as void listing, approval and themanufacturer's warranty.
5. Care must be exercised while installing thecheck valve in the trim to ascertain that theyare located with the arrow mark on the checkvalve body and pointed in proper direction.
6. The contraction and expansion associated withan excessive volume of trapped air could causethe waterway clapper to cycle open and shut. This may result in false alarm or an intermittentalarm. To avoid these, it is recommended tohave breather valve in the system pipingnetwork and a vent valve at the extreme endof the system to bleed-off the air.
7. The ball valve provided on the alarm line mustbe kept open and strapped in set position.
8. Pipe connecting the retard chamber andsprinkler alarm bel l must be supportedproperly to avoid loading on the retard chamber.
9. All the newly installed system pipes must beflushed properly before alarm valve is put intoservice.
Inspection and MaintenanceA qualified and trained person must commission thesystem. After few initial successful tests anauthorised person must be trained to performinspection and testing of the system.
It is recommended to carry out physical inspection
of the system at least twice a week. The inspectionshould verify that all the control valves are in properposition as per the requirement of the system andno damage has taken place to any component.
It is recommended that the alarm valve and itsaccessories should be examined and performed forfollowing at least quarterly or as demanded by localauthorities to ensure reliable and trouble freeoperation and service.
1. Inspection and testing is to be carried out onlyby an authorized person. DO NOT TURN OFF thewater supply valve to undertake repair work orto test the valve, without placing a roving firepatrol in the area covered by the system. Thepatrol should continue until the system is backinto service. Also do inform the local securitypersonnel and alarm control station, so that afalse alarm is not signaled.
2. Open the alarm test valve. Verify that thesprinkler alarm bell and/or the pressure alarmswitch/electric alarm properly actuate. Close thealarm test valve and verify that water hasceased to flow from the alarm line drain.
3. Clean the 20 NB (3/4") strainer provided on thesprinkler alarm bell line.
4. Clean the strainer of restriction assembly.
5. Inspect the check valve clapper located on thebypass line.
False Alarm1. Inspect the valve rubber clapper face. If worn
or damaged, replace it. Be certain that dirt, stone or any other foreign object have notaccumulated under the clapper face and lodgedin the groove or holes. Clean the clapper facethoroughly. If the seat ring surface is nicked orscoured, it might be possible to repair the sameusing lapping compound. If not, replace thecomplete valve or return i t to themanufacturer's works for repair.
2. If sprinkler alarm bell is not functioning or theimpel ler is jammed, please fol low themaintenance guideline provided in the cataloguefor sprinkler alarm bell.
3. If pressure alarm switch gives a steady signal, but sprinkler alarm generates an intermittentalarm, check sprinkler alarm bell shaft. If boththe sprinkler alarm bell and pressure alarmswitch are generating intermittent alarm thencheck for the possible air which is trapped withinthe sprinkler system. Trapped air is to be bledoff. Also the intermittent alarm may occur dueto sudden pressure drop and increase in thesystem. These problems can be corrected bymaintaining a steady supply.
