P ‐ Data Recovery Glossary
Partition –A method
to
logically
divide
a hard
drive
so
that
each
partition
in
the
O.S
gets considered as a separate hard drive. A unique drive letter is reserved for the
drive.
Partition Table –A data structure of size 64 bytes which decides in what way the PC’s
hard disk is divided into partitions or logical sectors. The partition table showcases
how the hard disk is divided for the O.S. The corresponding entry in the partition
table is reserved by each partition on a disk. This table is stored in the disk drive’s
first physical sector.
Passive Termination – At the end of the SCSI bus, it is the termination architecture
that is used to match its end by using a voltage divider network of passive resistors.
Path – A location of a file. The path consists of folder names or directory and begins
with the highest‐level directory or disk name and ends with the lowest‐level
directory name. A path can specify a file (e.g. C: Windowsftp.exe), a folder (e.g. C:
Temp), or a drive (e.g. C :).
PC‐ Personal computer.
Peripheral –Any part, apart from the CPU, RAM or ROM, of a computer. E.g.
keyboards, monitors, printers, scanners, tape drives, microphones, disks, speakers
and other such devices.
Platform‐ Basic design from which ha series of products is engineered of produced.
Platter‐ A disk made from actual metal (or other rigid material) that is mounted
inside a fixed‐disk drive. Multiple platters are mounted on the spindle in many drives
to provide more data storage surfaces. Each platter may use one or both surfaces to
store data.
Plug‐and‐Play (PnP) –A software and hardware specification which was developed
by Intel that allows automatic configuration of a PnP adapter and PnP system. PnP
cards are configured with supplied software for non‐PnP computers or via the PnP
system’s BIOS and generally have no switches or jumpers.
Port‐ A socket or connection on the controller card or motherboard. A motherboard
has primary or secondary ports (one or two). If only one port is present, the need to
add a controller card may arise for a secondary port.

POST –Acronym for Power‐On Self ‐Test. The BIOS executes a series of tests each time
a PC initializes which are known as POST. These tests check primary areas of the
system including the motherboard, video and drive system, and keyboard and
ensure that all components can be used safely. POST reports a fault with a series of
beeps or a hexadecimal code written to an I/O port.
Prefetch –When the processor’s external bus is idle, the instructions that are loaded
into a queue are Pre‐fetch.
Primary Partition –The O.S files are stored in this partition. To start an O.S from the
hard disk, a primary partition is required and needs to be activated.
Product Road Map –A company’s plan for the introduction of new products.
Programmed
I/O –Data
transfers
between
the
drive
and
host
using
programmed
I/O
(PIO) in a disk drive with an AT interface. The host writes to the Command Block
Registers using the PIO, when transmitting control information, such as the location
of a read command.
Proximity Recording –Technology that increases recording density by allowing
read/write head to come really close to the disk surface.
Protocol –Convention of data transmission that describes control format, timing and
data representation.
PRML (Partial Response Maximum Likelihood) –A read channel using active
equalization, sampled data and Viterbi detection to retrieve the user data off the
disk accurately.
