Executive Summary

Exponential data growth throughout all ecosystems drives the need for digital transformation. For every new file,

record or object that is created, many copies are generated. Businesses need backup for operational recovery,

remote replication for business continuity and disaster recovery, and archiving for long-term retention due to

regulatory compliance. Data loss can lead to lost revenues, privacy violations, lawsuits and other setbacks.

In many cases, organizations realize that data protection is an IT service that can easily be outsourced due to the

maturity of the technologies that support it, and no longer want to carry the burden of managing data protection

themselves. In fact, many organizations are no longer concerned about the underlying technologies that deliver

protection but simply want a predefined service level agreement (SLA), an assurance of data security and a

consistent cost model. Hitachi Vantara’s data protection solution is designed to fulfill those needs by offering a

choice of cloud-managed services that are either on-premises, off-premises or some hybrid version of the two.

Cloud-enabled Data Protection as a Service from Hitachi Vantara (DPaaS) helps organizations address these

challenges and deploy the right data protection strategy to drive new business capabilities.

This white paper represents the solution overview for Data Protection as a Service from Hitachi Vantara and

provides a high-level description of the DPaaS portfolio, the offerings, the service levels, the service classes and

the service architecture. It includes the service packaging, service catalogs, service reporting, service billing

model and service acquisition models.

One of the differentiating factors with this service portfolio is that it was designed for customers and partners. For

partners, this portfolio will open new revenue streams whether the partner resells or enhances the services. For

cloud service providers, the portfolio enables them to develop and package the services quickly and easily

because it is based on a comprehensive framework of offerings, service levels and service classes through a

predefined and preconfigured service architecture.

Data Protection as a Service: Overview

Hitachi Vantara’s Data Protection as a Service (DPaaS) portfolio is a collection of cloud-managed offerings that

simplify data life-cycle management and enterprise copy data management for our customers and partners. The

DPaaS portfolio consists of two data protection offerings: standard and enterprise. The standard DPaaS offering

includes two data protection capabilities: recovery copy and long-term retention. The enterprise DPaaS offering

includes the complete data life-cycle management by adding disaster recovery to the standard capabilities. The

complete offering is represented in “Figure 1: Data Protection as a Service: Overview.”

Figure 1: Data Protection as a Service: Overview

The standard DPaaS service offering provides operational recovery in the event of data corruption. It also

extends operational recovery to provide long-term retention that leverages enterprise copy data management for

regulated unstructured data.

The enterprise DPaaS service offering provides protection against site failure or catastrophic loss of service. The

industry is demanding a move away from legacy data protection where custom design, complex and time-

consuming ground-up deployment, and high capital expenditures are the norm, to a model that simplifies

consumption, deployment and operations.

Each offering is available through a choice of two service levels: DPaaS for full service, and DPaaS: Essentials

for partially managed service.

DPaaS is a fully managed service by Hitachi Vantara that is measured by service level objectives (SLOs) and

service level agreements (SLAs). DPaaS can be also packaged by Hitachi Vantara channel partners and delivered

to their clients with the partner brand, powered by Hitachi Vantara. It can reside within a customer’s data center

or a partner’s data center.

DPaaS: Essentials is a partially managed service that Hitachi Vantara delivers to its customers or its channel

partners, with SLOs and SLAs provided by both Hitachi Vantara and the customer or channel partner. The

expectation is that the run and operate services are provided by the customer or the partner. It can reside within a

customer’s data center or channel partner’s data center.

Across both service levels is support for four service classes: platinum, for mission-critical data; gold, for critical

data; silver, for important data; and bronze, for standard data.

Hitachi Data Protection as a Service: Architecture

The service architecture provides a preconfigured and prevalidated service catalog that defines a simple and easily

consumable design for data protection. The service catalog defines a well-accepted approach to service delivery

that has been validated over many years of industry deployment for data protection solutions. In addition, the

DPaaS offerings are not only tape-free, but also can be deployed across private cloud environments or hybrid

environments within our partner community.

Data Protection as a Service offerings details, shown in “Figure 2. Data Protection as a Service: Details,” outline

the core technologies used.

Figure 2. Data Protection as a Service: Details

The standard DPaaS offering sets the foundation by using the Hitachi Data Instance Director (HDID) for service

orchestration. Within this offering, the recovery copy capability employs snapshots, clones and local replication

by using single instancing and Hitachi Thin Image to deliver copy data management. The optional long-term

retention capability, which leverages our cloud object platform, Hitachi Content Platform (HCP), can be added.

This capability, also orchestrated from HDID, is built on top of the Storage as a Service from Hitachi Vantara

(STaaS v3.0). STaaS v3.0 is used to provide the storage billing rate card, and offers content indexing and long-

term data retention, as well as data governance and compliance. The long-term retention capability leverages HCP

to replace legacy tape infrastructure with a more agile and searchable data farm.

The enterprise DPaaS offering builds on top of the standard offering by adding a disaster recovery capability. This

capability provides a two-site remote replication option leveraging Hitachi storage replication technologies for

active-active clustering and auto failover.

Finally, the three capabilities being offered are packaged into two service levels for our customers and partners:

DPaaS, which is fully managed by Hitachi Vantara, and DPaaS: Essentials, which is partially managed by Hitachi

Vantara. Customers and partners have a choice as to whether they want to reduce their operational management

model by leveraging the DPaaS fully managed service or create their own packaging and value-add by leveraging

the DPaaS: Essentials partially managed service.

Hitachi Data Protection as a Service: Packaging

Hitachi Data Protection as a Service is packaged as outlined in “Table 1. Data Protection as a Service:

Packaging.” A subset of the capabilities is outlined, including some of the applicable features. Each of the

available features is highlighted within the standard and enterprise offerings, as well as for the DPaaS and DPaaS:

Essentials service levels. The DPaaS: Essentials features are also a subset of those of the full service since the

Page 6: Data Protection as a Service from Hitachi Vantara - Whitepaper · Cloud-enabled Data Protection as a Service from Hitachi Vantara (DPaaS) helps organizations address these challenges

expectation for this offering is that service management is delivered by either the partner or the customer to its

service subscribers.

Table 1. Data Protection as a Service: Packaging

Data Protection as a Service: Service Catalogs

Data Protection as a Service: Standard

The standard level of Data Protection as a Service from Hitachi Vantara is the foundation for the complete DPaaS

offering. Our standard level includes recovery copy and long-term retention capabilities. Each capability has set

SLOs and four service classes.

The SLOs include RPO (recovery point objective) and RTO (recovery time objective) definitions, backup and

restore success rates, and support for both storage-based and host-based backups, as well as defined retention

times.

For example, the platinum service class was designed for mission-critical data with an RPO of one to four hours

and an RTO of two hours. This service class provides a backup success rate of 99.5% or better and a recovery

success rate of 99%. It supports both storage-based and host-based backups where storage-based backup retention

is five days and host-based retention is for 30 days. The storage-based backup leverages snapshots at the local

array, whereas host-based backups require network access for host-based snapshots. As a result, storage-based

backups offer predictable performance and host-based backup performance may vary. Storage-based backups

require Hitachi Vantara storage within the offering whereas host-based backups are transparent to the storage

array type. Finally, for the long-term retention capability, the platinum service class delivers data retention for the

duration of the service contract.

As with the platinum service class, each of the others – gold, silver and bronze – are outlined in “Table 2. Data

Protection as a Service: Standard Service Catalog.” These service classes are designed to allow customers to

leverage the knowledge gained from data classification so that the most effective cost model can be deployed. It is

also important to note that most customers will choose to contract more than one of these service classes, but

perhaps will not choose all.

Table 2. Data Protection as a Service: Standard Service Catalog

Data Protection as a Service: Enterprise

The enterprise offering of Hitachi Data Protection as a Service from Hitachi Vantara, adds to the standard offering

by including a disaster recovery capability. As with the standard offering, the disaster recovery capability has a set

of SLOs and four service classes.

The key difference with the disaster recovery capability is that SLOs will vary due to the technology used to

support that service class. Platinum and gold leverage Hitachi Vantara storage technologies, such as global-active

device, Hitachi Thin Image (HTI), Hitachi TrueCopy and Hitachi Universal Replicator (HUR). The silver and

bronze service classes leverage file and block replication at the host layer.

As a result:

• Platinum is a fully automated and active-active service that delivers both an RPO and an RTO of zero.

• Gold supports a semi-automated service with some operations intervention required, resulting in the RPO and

RTO values increasing slightly with up to eight hours and up to four hours, respectively.

• Silver is also a semi-automated service that leverages file and block replication with RPO and RTO values of

12 hours or less.

• Bronze requires manual intervention for failover and failback, leverages file and block replication, and has

RPO and RTO values of 24 hours or less.

Finally, as with any industry-leading disaster recovery capability, regular testing for failover and failback is

executed. Depending on the service class, disaster recovery testing will vary from quarterly to annually.

Each of the service classes for the disaster recovery service – platinum, gold, silver and bronze – is outlined in

“Table 3. Data Protection as a Service: Enterprise Service Catalog.” As the standard offering, these service classes

are designed to allow customers to leverage the knowledge gained from data classification such that the most

effective cost model can be developed. With the disaster recovery capability, most customers choose only one

service class per data center but may choose different service classes across their complete IT infrastructure.

DPaaS Service Reporting

DPaaS reporting is a standard part of either the DPaaS or DPaaS: Essentials service levels. The DPaaS service

level provides detailed reporting that includes backup and restore statistics as well as storage and disaster recovery

utility utilization. The DPaaS: Essentials service level reporting is focused around storage pool definitions,

storage utilization, and resource utilization since the operations of the DPaaS service is the responsibility of the

partner or customer delivering the service to its subscribers.

The details for the reporting are outlined in “Table 4. DPaaS Service Reporting.”

Table 4. DPaaS Service Reporting

DPaaS Service Billing Model

DPaaS billing is based on front-end storage protected. Each gigabyte of data is billed based on this metric,

regardless of how many copies of data are managed at the back-end or what the back-end storage utilization is. In

addition, all hardware, software and services are bundled into the rate cards. This is done to simplify each rate

card and to allow subscribers to easily estimate the cost associated with the amount of storage being used.

DPaaS billing is also structured in two parts: a DPaaS rate card and a STaaS rate card. The DPaaS rate card is

used for billing of the recovery copy capability as well as for the disaster recovery capability. The STaaS rate card

is used for billing of the disaster recovery capability block storage usage for the secondary site as well as for the

long-term retention capability object storage usage.

Billing is also done at a storage band level. As each band is traversed, the band-appropriate cost is used for the

monthly billing. Monthly billing is done using a storage utilization average over the course of the previous month.

Therefore, as the storage needs cross bands, the cost of that band is reduced.

The storage bands used include the same model for block, file or object storage, even though the pricing for each

will vary. This release of DPaaS v1.0 includes the following storage bands for billing:

• Band A: 62 to 124TB

• Band B: 125 to 249TB

Page 10: Data Protection as a Service from Hitachi Vantara - Whitepaper · Cloud-enabled Data Protection as a Service from Hitachi Vantara (DPaaS) helps organizations address these challenges

• Band C: 250 to 499TB

• Band D: 500 to 999TB

• Band E: 1000 to 1999TB

• Band F: 2000 to 4000TB

Finally, regardless of the back-end billing model, each subscriber will only see charges for the front-end storage

protected on their monthly bill.

Data Protection as a Service: Acquisition Models

The Data Protection as a Service portfolio can be acquired from Hitachi Vantara directly and through partners.

This section outlines both acquisition models.

Direct Acquisition

With direct acquisition, Hitachi Vantara executes both the contract and the SLA directly with the service

subscriber. Both the DPaaS and DPaaS: Essentials service levels are available directly to subscribers as well as

through qualified partners.

Partner Acquisition

Data Protection as a Service from Hitachi Vantara was also designed with partners in mind. This means that

Hitachi Vantara offers these services through a select set of ecosystem partners and each of these partners offers

industry-leading expertise in their respective disciplines.

When leveraging a partner, Hitachi Vantara executes both the contract and the SLA with the partner, and in turn

the partner executes a contract and SLA with the subscriber. Hitachi Vantara will of course work closely with that

partner to ensure that the SLA conditions are tightly managed. This model enables partners to provide their own

value-add in conjunction with whichever DPaaS offering works best for their business model.

In addition, partners can provide one or more of the defined service delivery models to our joint customers. For

each service level, there are two delivery models for each of the DPaaS and DPaaS: Essentials services:

1. Data Protection as a Service. DPaaS defines a fully managed service by Hitachi Vantara. Two delivery

models are available: resell and partner enhanced. With this service level, there is an SLA with a series of

SLOs available from Hitachi Vantara to the partner.

2. Data Protection as a Service: Essentials. DPaaS: Essentials is a partially managed service from Hitachi

Vantara where the SLA between Hitachi Vantara and the partner represents a subset of the SLOs available

from the DPaaS service. Only some of the DPaaS SLOs are available to the partner, with the expectation that

the partner will provide the remaining SLOs and SLA to its subscribers. This service level also supports each

of the two delivery models: resell and partner enhanced.

For partners, the two delivery models for DPaaS include resell and partner enhanced. First is the resell of our

DPaaS offerings as a Hitachi Vantara branded service to the partner’s subscribers. Second is enhancement by

partners of the service from Hitachi Vantara, which would be packaged with their own value-add and sold as a

partner service to the partner’s subscribers. Again, regardless of which delivery model is chosen, the SLA for the

service is between Hitachi Vantara and the partner.

In addition, for our partners, there are two sales approaches to consider: sell-in and sell-out. Sell-in is the

transaction between Hitachi Vantara and the partner. Sell-out is the transaction between the partner and the

service subscriber. The service offerings and services provided to the partner at the sell-in side may not translate

directly to the service offerings or services that the partner sells-out to the service subscriber.

“Figure 3. Data Protection as a Service” provides an overview of this model.

Page 11: Data Protection as a Service from Hitachi Vantara - Whitepaper · Cloud-enabled Data Protection as a Service from Hitachi Vantara (DPaaS) helps organizations address these challenges

Figure 3. Data Protection as a Service

Resell Delivery Model

The partner resell model allows a partner to resell the Hitachi Vantara branded service to the partner’s subscribers.

Regardless of which of the DPaaS and DPaaS: Essentials service levels are resold, the SLA for the service would

be contracted between Hitachi Vantara and the partner. The partner would be responsible for the SLA to the

subscriber.

Partners may take the service as-is, or they may decide to add additional capabilities on top of the service. The

same applies for subscribers buying the partner resell service as they can wrap their packaging around it. For

example, the partner may resell the service as part of a larger package that includes assessment, design and

delivery professional services.

Partner Enhanced Delivery Model

Partners can also choose to “enhance” the service acquired directly from Hitachi Vantara, and then package it into

a service that meets their business and go-to-market plans.

In partner enhanced scenarios, there is a requirement for the “Powered by Hitachi Vantara” designation to be part

of our agreement.

In this scenario, the SLA from Hitachi Vantara would be to the partner. The partner would offer their own SLA to

their subscriber.
