What Does Degauss Mean?
Computer hard drives use magnetic fields to store data on special discs
called platters.
Degaussing is the elimination of a magnetic field.
A Degausser of the appropriate strength will eliminate the magnetic
fields on the hard drive platters eliminating all data.
Before Degaussing
Why Degauss? Computer hard discs are made to be robust storage systems
Permanent removing data from a hard drive can be very difficult as it
was designed to have many methods of retrieval
Anyone can send a drive to a recovery company and have the data
retrieved from it.

Common FAQ
How such a large magnetic strength is generated at less time? Is permanent magnet is used?
The Powerful Electro-magnets are used to generate and focus high magnetic filed strength on
the media exposing chamber inside the Data Degausser.
Is there any outward radiation from the system? Will that be a health hazard to operator?
The system is certified for minimum magnetic radiation. The measured radiation is 0.004% of
the threshold limit of magnetic radiation at which human body can be effected. It is very safe.
Operator can use the system in 8 hours shift without concern.
Why the storage media (HDDs and Tapes) post Degaussing render useless?
Post degaussing the intelligence on the disk controller (PCB with an EPROM) is got erased due
to magnetic exposure. Thus HDD can't be reused. In the case of Tape cartridges the servo-
track on the length of the tape is erased post degaussing thus the LTO tape can't be reused.
Why to Degauss? Can we physically destroy the Storage Media and dispose off?
The degaussing will not dent the media. Thus post degaussing much of the metallic and plastic
parts can be extracted for recycle there by reduce the volume of e-waste for landfill. This is an
environmental friendly e-disposal method.
If we can dis-assemble before disposal, then why to Degauss?
The process of disposal is outsourced to professionals in e-waste management. Thus before one
hand over the storage media to these service providers, degaussing will only ensure data erase
and become Information security compliance.
Is there any mandatory compliance of Degaussing process by Govt of India?
Presently No. The Authorities such as RBI, IRDA etc needs to decide on this. However, there are
global standards of data disposal confirming Degaussing process. But is is the responsibility of
every one to secure their data and ensure it should not reach the wrong persons.
