EMBARCADERO TECHNOLOGIES
ODJFS
• Largest agency in the state of Ohio
• Multi-billion dollar organization supporting operations in eighty-eight counties
• Multiple database platforms from mainframe to desktop
• Data architecture team:
– 2 full-time data modelers
– Several application developers who design their own schemas
5
EMBARCADERO TECHNOLOGIES
ODJFS Challenges
• Used ERwin until it became problematic
– New version of database synch was extremely difficult to use
– Needed quick and easy metadata reports
– Didn’t have support for upgrade to newest version
6
EMBARCADERO TECHNOLOGIES
ODJFS Considerations
• Modeling needs:– Support for multiple platforms, including mainframe DB2, UDB,
Oracle, and SQL Server
– Easy and comprehensive viewing and manipulation of model objects
– Model synchronization with databases and other models
– Easy suppression of unnecessary comparisons during synchronization
– Produce data dictionaries and reports that are easy to read

EMBARCADERO TECHNOLOGIES
ODJFS Evaluation
• Evaluation process
– Took three months
– Developed a matrix of required and desired functionality
– Identified three tools for consideration
– Ran each tool through test scenarios and recorded results
– Scored each tool against matrix

EMBARCADERO TECHNOLOGIES
ODJFS Solution
• Decided to switch to ER/Studio:
– Transition took two months• Exported all the models, then imported into ER/Studio as needed
• Took the opportunity to cull obsolete models
– Significant productivity increase• Very easy to learn
• Helpful live webinars
• Streamlined operation

EMBARCADERO TECHNOLOGIES
Optum / UnitedHealth Group
• UnitedHealth Group is the most diversified health care company in the United States
• Optum built their Enterprise Logical Data Model – Fully attributed logical model, used as the blueprint for all application builds across the
organization
– Encompasses all data subject areas pertinent to the healthcare industry (e.g. Provider, Product, Claim, Clinical, etc.)
• UHG was using two Data modeling tools: Embarcadero ER/Studio and CA ERwin
• As part of our Enterprise data modeling practice, standardization to a single suite of tools is key to our success

EMBARCADERO TECHNOLOGIES
Optum/UHG Challenges
• The existing ERwin environment had a number of challenges:– Security issues with the repository
– ERwin would lock PCs intermittently, causing loss of work, time, etc.
– Model locking issues: cannot do team modeling at all
– No reporting functionality unless you understand the 3rd GL language to write your own reports
– No regular release schedule to upgrade the product with new features and bug fixes
– Inadequate support when we have to escalate problems to CA support center

EMBARCADERO TECHNOLOGIES
Optum/UHG Considerations
• Our data modeling needs:– Security features that enable multiple users to work on one model at the same time
with no fear of losing work
– A very stable, intuitive and easy-to-use environment
– The capabilities needed to analyze, document, and share essential metadata
– The ability to provide direct access to existing data assets thus reducing re-creation and redundancy
– Robust reporting functionality
– Visual data lineage built into the modeling tool that allows the ability to map requirements to data models to databases and see it from top to bottom
– Support for big data platforms
– Regular release cycle and excellent technical support

EMBARCADERO TECHNOLOGIES
Optum/UHG Evaluation
• Held a POC between ER/Studio and ERwin
• As a result of our testing, we concluded that ER/Studio has multiple advantages:– Very low learning curve
– Easy to use ‘compare and merge’ function
– Very stable environment
– Enterprise Data Dictionary is cleaner and has a more effective approach, and lends itself to reusability
– Reporting functionality is more versatile in advanced search and overall reporting functionality
– Security features are far more granular and work as intended
– ‘Visual data lineage’ allows us to map requirements to data models and data models to databases

EMBARCADERO TECHNOLOGIES
Optum/UHG Solution
• ER/Studio is consistently ahead in all major categories we compared• In addition, ER/Studio is the clear winner in:
– Customer support
– Response to upgrade requests
– Regular release cycle so we are able to stay in tune with new technologies
• Consolidation to one powerful enterprise suite of tools brings greater visibility to the existing application landscape – Higher degree of reuse since all models are stored and maintained in a single repository
– Implementation of Enterprise Data Dictionaries for established standards
– All models are subject to a regular maintenance schedule
– Capability to perform model change management and impact analysis
– Increased model security management
– Ability to share and collaborate on model metadata with our business community
