HEIDI KELLY
WINS LEEA AWARD (LEADER IN EDUCATION OF EXCELLENCE AWARD)
Every year the Central Minnesota
Service Cooperative honors one
teacher from each building that
demonstrates leadership, dedication,
and professionalism in his/her
building and district. Teachers in
that building select that teacher to be
recognized.
This year the Dassel Elementary teachers chose
Heidi Kelly, kindergarten teacher, to receive that
award. Mrs. Kelly models excellence in her
assignment every day, and we want to thank her for
her dedication and service.
Mrs. Kelly will be recognized at the LEEA banquet
on Wednesday, October 23rd, in St. Cloud.
Congratulations, Mrs. Kelly!

PICKING UP YOUR CHILD EARLY
FROM SCHOOL
At Dassel Elementary, the safety of your child is a
priority. The Safety Committee continues to meet
this year and asks the following of you:
If you are picking your child up between 8:15–3:10
from school, please come directly to the office and
the office will contact your child’s teacher. Your
child will then come to the office to meet you. If
you know when you are picking up your child,
please send a note with the time, and the teacher
will try and have the child come to the office early.
If you are picking up your child after school, please
wait by the east door in our parent pick up area!
THE FOUR W’s OF STUDENT SAFETY
Who: Parents/
Guardians
driving students
to and/ or
picking students
up at the Dassel
Elementary
School.
What: We need
your help to
keep Dassel
Elementary
students safe
during loading
and unloading
times. AM – Students should enter the building at
the east door. Please do not drop students off in the
front of the building as this area is designated as a
bus loading and unloading zone. PM - Students not
riding a school bus will be dismissed on the east
side of Dassel Elementary. Students will cross the
street to walk home or meet parents, with school
patrol assistance, at Guy Street and William Avenue
(see map above). At no time will students be
allowed to cross at any location other than a marked
crosswalk, unless accompanied by an adult.
Parents/Guardians are encouraged to pick students
up at the door to safely escort them to a vehicle.
Reminder: Please do not park and wait in the
middle of the street. Do not park in the yellow curb
zone (dotted line on the map above). Do not park in
the Pick Up Zone during the designated hours.
When: Pick Up Zone
Loading & Unloading Times (7:45 A.M. to 8:15
A.M.) and (3:10 P.M. to 3:30 P.M.)
Where: In order to safely manage traffic during
loading and unloading times we are requesting that
parents travel north on Willis Street – West on
Horace Avenue – South on Guy Street. This will
create a continuous flow of traffic that can utilize
the Pick Up Zone (No Parking – dotted line on
map) to ease congestion and concerns regarding
student safety.
Thank you for your cooperation regarding this
important safety concern!
SCHOOL CLOSING
INFORMATION
It is almost that time of year again
when we need to start watching the
weather! I would like to remind you
that if there is any doubt about school
closing or starting late, please tune in one of the
following radio or T.V. stations: WCCO (830 AM),
KRWC (1360 AM), KDUZ (1260 AM), KLFD
(1410 AM), KARP (106.9 FM) and Channel 11
KARE TV. It is also important for your child to
know where they should go if school closes early
because of bad weather. Can they get in the house
if you are at work? Should they wait to be picked
up? Should they go to a neighbor’s house? These
are common questions that need answering when
early closings happen. If you have not filled out a
form from your child’s classroom teacher, please
ask for one.

TREATS TO SHARE
Just a friendly reminder to parents wishing to send
special treats for their child’s entire class… Only
pre-packaged treats are allowed. No homemade
goodies, please!

IMPORTANT STUDENT INFORMATION
We are off to a wonderful start here at Dassel
Elementary! We have learned many important
things about safety, schedules, respect,
responsibility, etc. Here is a recap of some of the
important items for you to consider as well:
1. Breakfast Opportunity – Students may
arrive at 7:35am to eat breakfast in the small
gym.
2. Morning Recess – The earliest all other
students may arrive at school is 7:45am
when supervisors are available. We think
morning recess is a great way for students to
socialize and have fun with friends before
school! Students also love being active and
playing games.
3. School Patrol Crossing on West Side –
7:45am – 8:00am.
4. Start of School – 8:00am: Students will
enter the building from morning recess;
8:10am: All students must be in their
classrooms so that the learning, lessons &
fun may begin!
5. School Dismissal – 3:15pm: Please make
arrangements to meet or pick up your child
after 3:15pm.
6. School Patrol Crossing on East & West
Side – Starts at 3:15pm. A sense of safety,
routine, and an over-all caring environment
is what we strive for at Dassel Elementary.
When we are all in the know, we can
provide the BEST for Dassel Elementary.
SNACKS FOR CARE GROUP
Each day your child has CARE Group
time from 9:45-10:15am. During that
morning activity, the students have the
opportunity for a snack/beverage. Please make sure
your child brings a healthy snack such as fruit,
cheese, crackers, granola bar, etc. These healthy
snacks will help provide the energy necessary for a
productive day.
Free milk or juice for snack is provided for each
student by the district.
OLWEUS 2019 KICK-OFF
FOR DASSEL ELEMENTARY
Dassel Elementary is excited to share
our theme for this school year:
“Cooking Up Good Character”!
We ask our students and staff to make a pledge to
step up against bullying. This year we are focusing
on what “ingredients” are needed to be someone of
Good Character. What does that mean to you?
Have your family brainstorm some ideas about this,
too!
We continue to talk about what bullying is and
some of the strategies to guide us when we need to
make a stand. Here is the main point that we want
everyone to know and understand: A student is
being bullied when he or she is exposed, repeatedly,
and over time, to negative actions on the part of one
or more students. Bullying implies an imbalance in
power and strength. The student who is bullied has
difficulty defending himself/herself.
Have you heard about our Step-Up Thursday? It is
the first Thursday of the month and the day for all
of us here at DE to wear our navy blue Step-Up
shirts.
Thanks to the students, staff and parents for
“Cooking Up Good Character” this year.
In the end it is not the words of our enemies that hurt
us, but the silence of our friends.
--Martin Luther King, Jr.

CHARGER APPAREL
Calling all Charger fans!! Exciting news
for our entire community… we will have a
Charger on-line store open for purchases
year-round! Please log on to the District website at
www.isd466.org for more information. Many items
are available, check it out! GO CHARGERS!!
GOLDEN RULERS OF THE MONTH
FOR OCTOBER
Every day of school, the
students at Dassel Element-
ary are involved in CARE
groups from 9:45 – 10:15.
During this time, they have a
snack and juice/milk break
and are engaged in a lesson
about character education.
This year we are focusing on
the character pillars of
integrity and compassion.
One of the activities we do
each month is to have the
students in each of the nine
CARE groups select a
Golden Ruler of the Month
to represent their group.
They are asked to vote for a
member of their CARE group who continually
displays all six character pillars and demonstrates
the Golden Rule: “Treat others as you would like
to be treated”.
RESPECT * RESPONSIBILITY * RESILIENCY * INTEGRITY *
COMPASSION * UNDERSTANDING DIVERSITY
HEADLINES IN SCHOOL HEALTH …
by Jenny Heidecker, RN
Annual Vision and Hearing Screening /
Dental Program
The Minnesota Department of Health recommends
that vision and hearing screening be completed in
1st and 3rd grades, and only hearing screening in
kindergarten and 2nd grade. Dassel Elementary did
the initial screenings on September 23. Re-screens
are planned for October 16. Re-screening is conducted on children who did not
pass the initial screening. When the re-screening is
complete, letters will be sent home with those kids
who are identified as needing further examination
by a healthcare provider. If your child does not
receive a letter, no further follow up is necessary. New this fall, Dassel Elementary is hosting the
Minnesota School Sealant Program on Tuesday,
October 1. This gives your child the opportunity to
receive free or reduced cost preventive dental
services at school. A licensed dental professional
will be offering sealants, cleanings, and fluoride
varnishes to students in kindergarten through 4th
grade. A letter and consent form was sent home the
first week of school. Please contact the School Nurse if you have any
questions or concerns about or child’s vision or
hearing, or any other health concerns. Jenny Heidecker, RN School Nurse 320-286-4100 ext. 1804 [email protected]

PATROL INSTALLATION
AT DASSEL ELEMENTARY
Mr. Voss, Dassel Elementary head custodian, swore
in 30 new 4th graders who are excited and eager to
help Dassel Elementary students safely cross the
streets before and after school. They are true leaders
in our building! We are grateful for their time,
effort, and great attitudes all year long.
FROM OUR SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER,
MRS. TSCHIDA…
As we move forward to our
second and third month of
school, we hope that your child
has adjusted to an easy flowing
morning routine, become
comfortable in their new
classroom, and have made some
new friends. If you are finding
that your child is continuing to
struggle coming to school, he/she is experiencing
behavior changes, and are reporting that they are
not fitting in, please contact their teacher or myself.
We want all students to feel welcome, comfortable
and safe when they arrive at Dassel Elementary.
I am in the office this school year on Monday,
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays. If you need to
talk with me, please leave me a message and I will
get back to you as soon as possible. My job as a
school social worker is to identify obstacles to a
child’s learning and then develop a plan to break
down the obstacle. The obstacles can vary from
behavior concerns, family changes, friendship
issues, anxiety, low self-esteem, learning disabilities
as well as many other issues. If you have questions
or are unsure if you should call, please do and I will
redirect you as necessary. Early intervention is
important to a child’s success.
Another important part of my job as a school social
worker is connecting families and children with
resources in our community. This includes
resources for financial support, emotional and
behavior support, and other resources to support
positive mental health. Please contact me if you are
looking for a resource or need a liaison with an
outside agency.
I look forward to a great year at Dassel Elementary.
Please call me if you have any concerns or
questions at (320) 286-4100 x1507.

MEET A NEW STAFF MEMBER
Hello! My name is Mike Voss,
the new head custodian here at
Dassel Elementary. I have been
in the D-C district since April of
this year beginning my job at the
Middle School.
My wife of almost 40 years and I
have lived in Buffalo for the last sixteen years. I
enjoy playing golf in my spare time. I usually make
a spring and fall weekend of golf with my family.
Since coming aboard in April, it has been an
absolute joy being surrounded by all of the
extremely nice people of the D-C community. It’s
such a change coming from a large corporation to a
warm, inviting community such as Dassel Cokato. I
am glad to be a part of it!

FROM COOK’S CORNER…
by Doris Kyllonen, Lead Cook
Welcome back staff and kids
from the Rockin' Lunch
Ladies! It's great to see all the
smiling faces!
We are well into the start of
the new school year.
Kindergartners are doing so
well coming through the lunch
line. And "wow", so many
have already mastered putting their numbers in for
breakfast and lunch. It's so nice to see new students
and old student customers coming through our
lunch line. We enjoy their smiles, conversation, and
laughter each and every day.
There are some special days coming in October--
National School Lunch Week, Oct. 14th-18th . We
welcome parents, grandparents, and visitors to come
and enjoy lunch with their children. Halloween is
Oct. 31st, and we wish you all a safe and happy
Halloween.
A sign of late summer is healthy heirloom tomatoes,
which come in a wide variety of colors and are
often sweeter and juicier than most commercial
tomatoes. The definition of the word "heirloom" is
quite the debate. Some say that to be a bona fide
heirloom variety, the seeds must be 50 to 100 years
old, while others claim that an heirloom tomato is a
variety that's been selected and handed down
through several generations of a family. Heirloom
tomatoes have a nutritional profile similar to farm
stand tomatoes--that is, they're incredibly healthy.
Tomatoes are rich in vitamins C, A, and K, and are
an excellent source of antioxidants. Red and orange
tomatoes contain the antioxidant lycopene, while
purple tomatoes contain anthocyanins.
You can enjoy an heirloom tomato in the same
ways you would eat a standard tomato, but don't
hide it in a sauce--allow the heirloom's color, shape
and flavor to shine in a raw or lightly cooked form.
Heirloom tomatoes differ from commercial varieties
because they are typically open-pollinated, meaning
the tomatoes rely on traditional pollination methods
like insects and wind. Commercially-cultivated
hybrid tomatoes, the kind you see at the
supermarket, contain seeds that cannot be replanted.
But that's not the case for heirlooms, which can be
grown season after season.
Summer's almost over, so make the most of the
season's bounty by combining sliced or chopped
heirloom tomatoes, fresh corn kernels, and diced
watermelon. The more varieties of tomatoes you
use, the more colorful the salad will be. Drizzle the
produce with balsamic vinegar and crumble goat
cheese over the top for a tasty side dish. A healthy
diet should include heirloom tomatoes or any other
type of tomato. Enjoy your fall by eating tomatoes
for a healthy, balanced diet.
It's such a joy to be back feeding all of our
customers. We will chat soon.
P.S. Want something fun to do a few days of the
school year? Come and be a substitute kitchen
worker with the Rockin’ Lunch Ladies at Dassel
Elementary! You can enjoy serving food to the
children and helping out with other things in the
kitchen. If interested, please contact the district
office to get an application for being a sub. You
can also call 320-286-4100 x1505 with any
questions. We’d love to have you join us!

Dassel Elementary as your designated school so we
can get those benefits! More information to come.

Pop Can Tops/Tabs Yes, we still collect the tabs from the top of cans!
We have a wonderful little collection “house” and
the tabs are collected and turned into the local
McDonalds for the Ronald McDonald House in the
metro area. These can be turned in any time!
Empty Printer Cartridges, etc. Over 25 million pounds of empty printer cartridges
and cell phones are thrown in landfills each year.
Send those old cell phones and empty laser, inkjet,

RAINY/COLD WEATHER
CLOTHING ALERT
Just a reminder… the children go outside
each day at recess, so dressing for the
weather is vital! If it is raining hard, or if
the wind chill factor is about 10 below, we do not
allow anyone to go outside. The students would
remain inside during recess. During the cooler fall
and winter weather, please be sure that your child
has a warm coat, gloves or mittens, some type of
head gear, boots, and snow pants when needed.
Maybe even an umbrella and rain boots for those
rainy days! Please note: if you would like help
getting the necessary winter gear for your children,
please let us know and we will try to provide some
assistance.
DORIS KYLLONEN WINS EDUCATIONAL
SUPPORT STAFF AWARD
Again this year, the Resource
Training and Solutions Council
will honor one support staff
member from each building. This
person is one that demonstrates
leadership, is a positive role model,
continually makes a difference
every day in the lives of students
and staff, and shows a genuine respect and concern
for others.
The Dassel Elementary support staff chose Doris
Kyllonen, our kitchen manager, to receive the
Educational Support Staff award. Doris transforms
the kitchen every month to reflect a theme or
featured event. She creates an environment where
Food, Fun and Nutrition are all rolled in to one!
She does all of this with a smile and sense of
humor! Every student is special to Doris…. Her
heart for service is noteworthy!! All our BEST to
Doris as she retires at the end of October. Her
dedication and service for almost 30 years is
remarkable!

SECOND STEP CURRICULUM
We want your child to be as successful as possible
at school. Success in school is not just about reading
and math. It is also about knowing how to learn and
how to get along with others. This year we will be
using the Second Step program in your child’s
classroom to teach these critical skills. The Second
Step program teaches skills in the following four
areas:
1. Skills for Learning: Students gain skills to help
themselves learn, including how to focus their
attention, listen carefully, use self-talk to stay on
task, and be assertive when asking for help with
schoolwork.
2. Empathy: Students learn to identify and
understand their own and others’ feelings. Students
also learn how to take another’s perspective and
how to show compassion.
3. Emotion Management: Students learn specific
skills for calming down when experiencing strong
feelings, such as anxiety or anger.
4. Problem Solving: Students learn a process for
solving problems with others in a positive way.
Thank you for supporting your child in learning the
skills that lead to success in school and in life. If
you have any questions about the Second Step
program, please do not hesitate to contact Carmen
Tschida or your child’s classroom teacher.

BIRTHDAY INVITATION REMINDER
Birthday invitations are very special to
receive! We ask for your cooperation in
not sending birthday invitations to
school to be handed out. The only
exception would be if you are inviting
the whole class. We have many disappointed
children when invitations are handed out and they
are not included. Please make other arrangements
to mail them or deliver the invitations in an
alternative way! Please note: the school office and
teaching staff will not disclose the addresses of our
students due to data privacy laws.
FROM THE MEDIA CENTER. . .
by Mr. Asquith, Media Specialist
It was a very busy summer in the Dassel
Elementary Media Center. Due to getting new
carpet, we took the chance to redesign a new lay out
for the Media Center. We have moved some books
around, added some shelves and the overwhelming
feedback is that it seems like we have a lot more
room. Which is really nice for our theme this year
“Dive into Reading”! We have a lot of nautical and
aquatic themed decorations and activities for the
kids this year. With the redesign and the new
decorations are worth a stop into the Media Center
this fall.
A great time to visit the Media Center and check out
the new look will be during our Fall Book Fair.
This event is held during Fall Parent Teacher
Conference, which this year are November 12th to
the 15th. It is a great chance to buy some great
books and support our school at the same time.
55% of every purchase goes to benefit the Media
Center and other literacy programs Dassel
Elementary offers. Thank you all for the wonderful
support you show to the Media Center and the
literacy of the students at Dassel Elementary!
