ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR API EXAMINATIONS
You must be employed by or under contract to an authorized inspection agency or owner/user agency as defined in API
653/API 510/API 570
You must have one of the following combinations of education and experience:
BS in engineering or technology, with minimum of 1 year's experience and skills in supervision or performance of inspection, activities of aboveground storage tanks as described in API .
Two-year degree or certificate in engineering or technology, with minimum of 2 years experience and skills in design, repair, construction, operation or inspection of aboveground storage tanks, of which 1 year must be in supervision or performance of inspection activities as described in API
High school diploma or equivalent, with a minimum of 3 years' experience and have the same skills as listed in item 2.
Have 5 or more years? experience and same skills as listed in item 2.
Welding and training in various organizations of different sector
1. API examination consists of 150 multiple-choice questions with an open and closed book sections. The examination is administered by participating members of the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors and by the Professional Examination Service (PES). Total length of examination is 8 hours. Individual jurisdictions may change a sitting fee to take the examination in their jurisdiction. Please contact the jurisdiction you select for an exact amount. There is no additional sitting fee at the locations where examination is administered by PES.
2. If you pass the examination and all section of your application are complete, you will be certified and receive a wallet card and a certificate approximately 4 months after the examination date.
3. API grants each applicant three consecutive attempts during the 18 months period to sit and pass the test, starting with the first exam administration the applicant registers for if you fail the examination of your first attempt, you may retake it twice. If you fail to appear for the, it will still count as official attempt.
4. If you do not pass the examination on the first attempt, you need to submit a $50.00 rescheduling fee. If you do not pass it on te second attempt, you must also submit an updated Employment Reference form. If the candidate is unsuccessful on the third attempt, a new application must be submitted with a new application fee.
5. Examination results will be mailed to you approximately 8 weeks after you have taken the exam. DO NOT call API, PES, or your jurisdiction for examination results, these results WILL NOT be given over the telephone.What to Bring to the Exam
No. 2 Pencils;
A non-programmable calculator (a calculator with only simple functions);
The applicable API and ASME reference publications. Please note: highlighting, underling, page tab, and notes written in margins of the code books are acceptable. However, loose pages inserted in the code books are not acceptable. Note: API and ASME publications are copyrighted material. Photocopies of publications are not permitted at the exam;

1.0 Each applicant for certification as a Certified Welding Inspector
1.1 Shall be high school graduate (must have passed 10th
examination or equivalent)
1.2 Shall have not less than five years experience in an occupational function that has a direct relationship to welded assemblies fabricated to national or international standards and be directly involved in one or more in DESIGN, PRODUCTION,FABRICATION, INSPECTION, etc.
1.3 A maximum of two years of post high school education may be substituted for an equal number of years of the required five years experience provided studies are relevant to any of the functions described in 1..2Credit is given as follows :
(i) BACHELOR DEGREE : Two years maximum if the degree is in Engg. Technology, Engineering or Physical Sciences.
(ii) ENGG. / TECHNICAL SCHOOL COURSES :
Two years maximum for having successfully passed a diploma that can be applied to (i) above
(iii) TRADE / VOCATIONAL COURSES :
One year maximum for successfully completed courses in a curriculum related to welding.
1.4 Three years of teaching experience may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the five years experience requirement, provided that the teaching is full time in a trade, area or technical school, college, university in the occupational skill.
1.5 For meeting the requirements of experience, he Employment Verification Page in the AWS – CWI Examination Application Form shall be signed by the current or most recent employer. (The AWS – CWI Examination Application Form will be provided by us, on Registration for the Program).
1.6 Shall be familiar with and understand fundamentals of the following processes :SMAW / GTAW / SW / SAW / FCAW /
OFW / GMAW / ESW / EGW / RW / LBW / EBW / PAW / Thermal Cutting & Mechanical Cutting / Brazing / Soldering / Thermal Spraying.
1.7 Shall be familiar with and understand the following examination methods :
VT / UT / RT / MT / PT / AET / LT / ET1.8 Shall pass an eye - examination to prove near
vision acuity and color perception test.
EXAMINATIONS
After you've been a CWI for a minimum of six andyour career has evolved into supervisory ormanagerial responsibilities in the field of qualitycontrol/quality assurance, you will want to applyfor the highest level of certification : a SeniorCertified Welding Inspector, or SCWI . SCWIs arein demand by companies looking to have it all- skilled, seasoned welding managers who can dothe job and supervise others.
The SCWI is an individual who is in a supervisoryattained a higher level of experience than a CWI.The successful applicant also has professionaleducation which has provided the opportunity tosolve problems with a scope and level of difficultybeyond those experienced as a CWI.
Every CWI who has held CWI certification for a minimum of six years and possesses the requisite 15 years of experience, is not necessarily a candidate for the SCWI exam. Ideal candidates for the SCWI exam have sought out opportunities to expand their careers. Senior Certified Welding Inspector candidates typically will have supplemented their basic education or gained extensive problem-solving experience. Such a background should provide them with a deep and specific understanding of advanced NDE topics, quality systems, procedure qualifications, and other SCWI knowledge areas as identified below.
Experience Requirements:SCWI applicants must document direct work
involvement in:
Design-, Production-planning, control, and supervision of welding materials, procedures and operations Construction-personnel supervision and fabrication or erection of weldments.
Quality control-detection and measurement of weld discontinuities, procedures.

NOTE ON PREPARATIONFOR ASNT LEVEL – III EXAMINATION To become an ASNT Level – III certificate
holder one has to appear for and PASS the BASIC paper (Compulsory) and minimum one NDT method ( such as VT, RT, UT, etc.
The examination is held twice a year in India (around April / Nov)
ELIGIBILITY : -For Degree Engineers : minimum 1 year
experience beyond NDT Level – II experience requirements.
For Diploma Engineers / Science Graduates: minimum 2 years experience beyond NDT Level –II experience requirements.
For all others: minimum 4 years experience beyond NDT Level – II experience requirements.Note: a) It is not necessary to be certified NDT Level – I or II,
b) The experience should be equivalent to the NDT Level – II work requirements as defined in document SNT – TC – 1A.
2. NO COURSE ATTENDANCE IS COMPULSORY for attending the ASNT Level – III Examination
Level – III preparatory classes are organized by many Institutes. As far as ASNT is concerned, NO CLASS IS REQUIRED. If the student studies all relevant course material, prepares for at least 6 months with good understanding of the fundamentals, has ‘Hand On’ practical experience and reasonable English, he will succeed. Basic and method examination(s) must be taken to become eligible to receive a certificate for that method(s). The maximum number of examinations that can be taken is six during the three days of the Examination.
This paper has 135 Questions and duration of 4 hours. The paper can be broadly divided into 3 areas:
Questions on ‘SNT – TC – 1A & CP –189
(Check with ASNT as to the applicable edition)
Questions on ‘Materials & Processes’ e. Metallurgy, Manufacturing Processes
& Discontinuities, Composite Structures, Plastics, etc.
Questions on ‘NDT Methods’ namely: RT, UT, MT, PT, ECT, VT, LT, NRT, TI, AET (Questions are up to Level – II difficulty)
PREPARATION :
Study well all Books recommended by ASNT. Give attention to Technical Terminology, Fundamentals as well as new developments in each NDT method.
As mentioned earlier, NO CLASS IS REQUIRED. However, if you wish to attend a class, then attend a good, reputed class, at least 4 / 5 months before examination. This will allow you to find out what are your weak areas and give you time to improve on them.
If possible attend classes and get certified to Level – II in as many NDT methods as possible.
Improve your English comprehension and Logic Skills.Read and understand various Codes and standards such as ASME, API, AWS, etc.
