    Outstanding Contributions Award

Prof. Krithi Ramamritham received his B.Tech (Electrical Engineering) and M.Tech (Computer Science) degrees from IIT Madras, and then, received his Ph.D. in Comput-er Science from the University of Utah. After working at the University of Massachusetts, from 1981-2001, he is currently at IIT. During 2006-2009, he served as Dean (R&D) at IIT Bombay. He now heads IIT Bombay's new Center for Urban Science and Engineering. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, ACM, Indian Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Sciences, India, and the Indian National Academy of Engineering. Twice he has received the IBM Faculty Award. He is also a recipient of the Distinguished Alum-nus Award from IIT Madras and the Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) from the University of Sydney. He has been associated with the editorial board of various journals. These in-clude Real-Time Systems Journal, IEEE Embedded Systems Letters (Editor-in-Chief), IEEE Internet Computing, The VLDB Journal, and several IEEE Transac-tions: Knowledge and Data Engineering, Parallel and Distributed Systems & Mo-bile Computing. He also has served on the Board of Trustees of the VLDB Endow-ment, the Technical Advisory Board of TTTech, Vienna, Austria, and Microsoft Research India. Of the two startups that he has co-founded, Agrocom offers award-winning in-formation and communication technology-based real-time decision-support tools to farmers and organizations enabling progressive farming while Nex Ro-botics delivers high quality products in Robotics and Embedded systems.

Prof. Ramamritham made many strong contributions related to DASFAA. 1. He received the 10+ Year Best paper award for his 1995 DASFAA paper,

titled “Continuous Media Sharing in Multimedia Database Systems” in DASFAA 2010.

    2. He delivered an excellent keynote, titled “Dissemination of Dynamic Data: Semantics, Algorithms, and Performance,” at DASFAA 2006 in Singapore. This work produced several research papers published in top conferences such as VLDB, ICDE, and ICDCS.

    3. He served as the General Co-chair for DASFAA 2008, New Delhi and re-ceived the feedback that DASFAA 2008 was then one of the best DASFAA conferences many attendees had ever seen. His contribution helped raise the awareness of DASFAA conference in India and the Asia-Pacific region. This effort led to a significant increase in participation in this conference from India. His efforts and that of his colleagues brought more than 80 students from top tier engineering schools and institutes to DASFAA 2008.

    4. He served the DASFAA PC many times in the last 15 years. 5. He served the DASFAA steering committee for many (seven) years and

brought changes in conference promotion in India and the Asia-Pacific re-gion and encouraged many researchers to actively participate in DASFAA conference and DB research.

    6. He served in the DASFAA awards committee for six years.

    Challenges for Dataset Search

    Keynote

    Tuesday 22 April 2014

    09:30 - 10:30

    Wantilan Plenary

    Christian Jensen

David Maier, V.M. Megler, Kristin Tufte Ranked search of datasets has emerged as a need as shared scientific archives grow in size and variety. Our own investigations have shown that IR-style, feature-based relevance scoring can be an effective tool for data

    David Maier

discovery in scientific archives. However, maintaining interactive response times as archives scale will be a challenge. We report here on our exploration of per-formance techniques for Data Near Here, a dataset search service. We present a sample of results evaluating filter-restart techniques in our system, including two variations, adaptive relaxation and contraction. We then outline further directions for research in this domain.

Graph Mining Approaches: From Main Memory to Map/Reduce

    Tutorial 1

    Tuesday 22 April 2014

    13:30 - 15:00

    Wantilan B

    Sharma Chakravarthy

Practitioners and professionals requiring up-to-date in-formation on latest trends in newer forms of mining par-adigms and how to apply these techniques for various applications, such as dealing with very large graph sizes, partitioning techniques, graph query answering etc. will

    Sharma Chakravarthy

benefit from this tutorial. The presenter has been working for over a decade on graph mining, scalability issues of graph mining, and its applications. Although graph mining itself has been around for a long while, it has come to the fore-front due to its ability to make a difference in such domains as fraud monitoring and more recently analyzing very large social networks. Conventional mining techniques do not lend themselves to some of these applications as they cannot represent inherent structural relationships and exploit them during mining. We will present several graph mining approaches that have been proposed in the literature and new ones that are being developed. Practitioners will benefit from the practical nature of the topics and find the solutions presented applicable to problems they have encountered. Researchers will benefit from the issues that need to be addressed in one of the hot areas currently being revolutionized by increasing amounts of information available using large computing farms.

    Crowdsourced Algorithms in Data Management

    Tutorial 2

    Tuesday 22 April 2014

    15:30 - 17:00

    Wantilan B

    Dongwon Lee

As a novel computation paradigm, crowdsourcing is be-ing actively pursued in diverse academic disciplines. Within computer science, many sub-fields have em-braced the concept of crowdsourcing with open arms and applied the concept to solve diverse challenging

    Dongwon Lee

problems. Database community is no exception to this phenomenon and there have been many exciting new results using crowdsourcing appearing in recent database literature. This tutorial in particular seeks to cover state-of-the-art crowdsourced algorithms in data management. After gentle introduction on the concept of crowdsourcing, this tutorial provides the overall landscape of crowdsourced database research, with the focus on the latest crowdsourced algorithms that extend conventional database algorithms (e.g., count, sort, match, and search).

The prevalence of GPS sensors and mobile devices has enabled tracking the movements of almost any kind of moving objects such as vehicles, humans and animals. As a result, in the past decade we have witnessed unprece-dented increase of trajectory data both in volume and

    Kai Zheng

variety. With some attributes such as variable lengths, uncontrolled quality, high redundancy and uncertainty and so on, trajectory data challenge the traditional methodologies and practices in many research areas including data storage and indexing, data mining and analytics, information retrieve, etc. Trajectory data management has been attracting numerous research interests from both aca-demia and industry due to its tremendous value and benefits in a variety of criti-cal applications like traffic analysis, fleet management, trip planning, location-based recommendation, etc. In this tutorial, we will talk about the challenges, techniques and open problems with the focus on similarity-based analytics, the foundation of trajectory management, and covering a range of topics from fun-damental theory, algorithms to advanced applications.
