Some events are announced at the last minute on our Yahoo Group called Das Kummet. Please sign up to join this group if you have not already done so. Instructions can be found on our web site under the Newsletters & E-mail groups tab. It was a brisk night in January and the snow was flurrying as I drove to the Omni Hotel for the Tidewater Chapter Annual Banquet. The butterflies were doing back-flips in the pit of my stomach, but I needn’t have worried as I was in good hands. I had learned a few days earlier that both the outgoing and the incoming presidents would not be able to attend, and that I would be either “in the spotlight”, or, “on the spot” as the master of ceremonies.

My fears proved to be groundless as helping hands appeared from everywhere. Gary and Karen Wickstrand were on the spot and working the check-in table. Peter Florance was already there with a spare laptop and the slide show of 2007 activities. Judy Semo arrived soon after with the slides for the evening’s presentation. Ed DeLanis had some special cards ready for me to present to outgoing officers Bill Oates, Bob Parsons, and Glenn Martin. by over 60 attendees who braved the weather. Curt Kiser assisted with the slide show, and Bob Parsons helped with the drawing for door prizes. My thanks to all the incoming and outgoing officers who were

in attendance; apart from those already mentioned; Jeff Triplet, Bob Brochu, and Nick Jones. I hope I didn’t leave anybody out.

An organization like the Tidewater Chapter of the BMWCCA would not exist without the help of a lot of volunteers. I must admit that I volunteer because I enjoy car club activities, and I figure that if I want

to be a part of a strong chapter that has fun events; then I’m investing my time well. I would encourage everybody reading these notes to resolve to try

to get involved in some of the events this year. Try to attend a few of the fun events we have planned in your areas of interest; whether driving, tech,

collecting, or just going to a nice restaurant and socializing with your fellow enthusiasts. Try to volunteer if you have the time to work on a committee, assist with an event, or write something for the newsletter.

Being in a car club like ours can mean so much more than just getting a magazine and a newsletter in the mail each month. Make the most out of your membership, and get the most

enjoyment out of your BMWs by driving them to the next event on the calendar that strikes your fancy.

Greetings from your 2008 Tidewater Chapter Board of Governors, officers and volunteers! The election results (ok, they were uncontested) are in and the new slate of officers are hard at work. The new Board, officers and volunteer Chairpersons are listed on page ___. Thanks to the hard work of our 2007 Board, officers and volunteers we already have a solid schedule of events lined up for 2008. Bill Oates, Glenn Martin and Bob Parsons have retired from active duty, but will remain closely involved in Chapter activities as have so many former officers of the Chapter. Bill, Glenn and Bob, thank you for all you have done for the Chapter!

By the time you read this we will already have held the Annual Banquet, two Coffee and Conversation events and a Fun Drive on the Peninsula. Our first of two Driving Skills Clinics will be held in March. We are off to a great start.

Chapter volunteers are busily lining up dinners, the Annual Picnic, Tech Sessions, another Driving event and more for the rest of the year. Please make plans to attend. If you are a relatively new member or have not been out to an event in a while I encourage you to attend an event or become a volunteer. We have a great group with a broad

variety of interests. I am sure we will make you feel right at home.

Switching gears, I travelled to Italy in November for a short vacation. This was my first chance to see the 1 Series in the skin and get exposed to some of BMW’s diesels. A 1 Series actually looks large in Italy especially set against numerous Smart cars and other golf cart sized conveyances. It won’t look half as large over here but it will still be a great addition to the BMW lineup. Diesel power also is popular. By now you have probably read some of the articles in Roundel and I have to agree the diesels are powerful, smooth and frugal. We need them here and it appears we will see a 335d and 535d soon. I can’t wait for a test drive.

BMW has lots of other product launches coming this year. Unfortunately the March launch of the M3 may be muted as many of the launch cars were damaged in transit to the US by a winter storm at sea. BMW is repairing some and crushing others. All tolled reports suggest as many as 400+ cars were damaged. Just repeat after me – good things come to those who wait. Really, really good things.

This year’s Annual Banquet was held at the Omni Newport News Hotel and was a resounding success. That night also showed the resolve that the members of our Chapter have to join in and have a wonderful evening, regardless of the weather.

The weatherman indicated that there was a possibility of snow the evening the event. Did that stop folks from jumping in their vehicles and heading to the dinner? Of course not. Some arrived in their BMWs, others in all-wheels of other brands and still some in 4X4 trucks.

In actuality, the snow was not an issue, though people were prepared for the worst. On arriving at the hotel, the drive up to the parking area looked like a picture postcard with snow on the lawns and in the trees. It was truly very beautiful.

This banquet was a little unusual in that it was to be the last official function for outgoing President, Bill Oates; Secretary, Glenn Martin; and Activities Chair, Bob Parsons. Our thanks to all for a job well done, and in the case of Bob Parsons, a five year term creating and leading events to various venues and events. Bob has ensured continued successful club activities by forming a new Activities Committee to carry on planning efforts. If there is a function, event, or tech session you want to participate in, feel free to contact the members of this Committee via the website.

When the BMW group has a dinner, we eat well. This banquet was no exception: The buffet provided something to satisfy the pallet of everyone present. And the dessert table was covered with the delightful splendors that fulfilled the desires of all. And there were those who helped themselves to multiple tidbits.

Our sponsors provided us with a number of donated gifts enabling the drawing of door prizes. These covered the gamut from wine glasses to clothing and everything in between.

The reason for the Annual Meeting is not only to have fun, but to present the slate of Officers for the following year. The 2008, year is going to be led by the following Officers: President, Bob Eveleigh; Vice President, Bob Avery: Secretary, Jeff Triplett; and Treasurer, Ed DeLanis. The activities schedule, as developed by the Activities Committee, was presented for the first six months of the year, with the Valentine’s Day Fun Drive scheduled on February 16 2008, the first safety clinic (driving school) scheduled for March 9, 2008 and a Fun Drive to the Eastern Shore scheduled for April 19, 2008. Put these dates

on your calendars and plan on attending.

For those who did not attend this year’s Annual Banquet, be sure to plan to attend the event in 2009. Just remember that regardless of the weather this Chapter and its members will have a GREAT time!

“A little snow was not going to stop this crowd.”

Recent magazine reports of the upcoming 1-Series “tii” model have brought back a few memories. In the late summer of 1973 I purchased a 1972 BMW 2002 tii – the first real BMW hot rod to be officially imported to the US. What a blast – 145 hp, big brakes and “only” $4,800.

The car had Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection (using a belt-driven injection pump) that was more horsepower than emissions-friendly. This injection system required precise mechanical settings using special BMW tools (actually available at the time from the patience – no electronics and no oxygen sensors at that time in BMW’s automotive history.

About a year after buying the car I took a trip to Annapolis, Md. The car would not start when it was time to go to dinner. Being somewhat paranoid at the time, I always carried a pretty hefty tool box in the trunk and figured I could solve the problem very quickly. Points, cap, rotor and plugs looked good, but the plugs were “dry” even after repeated cranking. Lack of fuel seemed to be the culprit. The tank was full and a stream of gas shot from the fuel line I disconnected when the engine was cranked over. I removed the plastic cover over the injection pump drive belt and found the unraveled remains of the steel-belted clear rubber belt. No going out to dinner that night. Early the next morning I found a local BMW dealer that had the belt and took a $50 round-trip cab ride for the $12 part. An hour later the car was running and I was happy once again.

On a Sunday afternoon less than six months later and only a couple of miles from home after a weekend trip to the Skyline Drive the car died at a traffic light. After pushing the car into a nearby gas station (fortunately the one I used regularly)

a quick inspection confirmed another unraveled injection pump belt.

On Monday morning I appeared at the BMW (and Toyota) dealership in Portsmouth (yes, even Portsmouth had a BMW dealer in 1974) and asked the parts clerk for an injection pump belt for a 2002 tii. A man at the other end of the counter gave me a puzzled look and wanted to know why I needed

such a part, since it was good for the life of the car (that would be “lifetime” in today’s BMW jargon) and definitely was not a “service item”.

He identified himself as the regional parts rep for Hoffman Motors (the importer of BMW’s at the time) about the same time the parts clerk placed the new drive belt on the counter. I looked at the belt and replied that this was the third belt for my car. It was obviously an updated part, since it was black and of much firmer rubber than the previous almost clear belts. When I asked him why BMW dealers would have an updated replacement in stock if the

original never would need to be replaced, I received a shrug in response. I then asked for and purchased a second belt that day and made a belt change an annual event. I never had another one break.

This story brings to mind BMW’s current philosophy of “lifetime”

fill for transmissions and differential fluids. A little extra maintenance may cost you more in the short run, but can pay off over the long haul if you plan to keep your car for more than a few years. Ask Mike Miller (Roundel Tech Talk column) about his thoughts on “lifetime” fills.
