The Big Green got everyone into the act in the season opener as all 14 active players saw at least five minutes on the court with a dozen scoring. Junior Brendan Barry led the onslaught with a career-high 26 points on 8-of-10 shooting from behind the arc as Dartmouth drained 22 long balls to set a new school record. Sophomore Chris Knight was another of the five players in double figures while recording his first career double-double with 11 points and 10 boards. More career highs from the game — junior James Foye with 18 points and eight rebounds, and ju- nior Will Emery with 14 rebounds and six assists. Freshman Wes Slajchert impressed in his colle- giate debut, drilling 4-of-6 trifectas for 12 points while also handing out five assists. As a team, the Big Green had 31 assists, another school record, as were their 64-rebound, 45 3-point attempts and 82 field goal tries. The lone senior on the team, Guilien Smith, shook off the rust with a modest five points and four rebounds in his first game in nearly a full year. He missed all but three contests last season after averaging 12.0 points as a sophomore. Series vs. Davidson This is the fourth meeting between the two schools on the hardwood with the Wildcats own- ing a 2-1 advantage. The first contest was on Dec. 18, 1965, a 19-point Davidson win, but the Big Green won the most recent contest, albeit over 40 years ago, 82-69, on Jan. 28, 1978. The home team has won every game in the series. This game brings Dartmouth Director of Varsity Athletics Communications (SID) Rick Bender back to Davidson. He is a 1993 graduate who worked there as a baseball coach and SID for 14 years. Scouting the Wildcats Davidson got the season off to a good start with an 83-63 victory over Cleveland State on Tuesday after being picked to finish third in the highly competitive Atlantic-10 in the preseason poll. Last year, the 21-12 Wildcats won their confer- ence tournament to advance to the NCAA Tour- nament where they lost a close game as a 12-seed in the first round to Kentucky, 78-73. Davidson is not afraid to shoot from long dis- tance (shades of Stephen Curry?), hitting 13-of-36 (.361) against Cleveland State. Guards Kellan Grady and Jon Axel Gudmundsson earned preseason All-A-10 honors with Grady on the first team and Gudmundsson — also named to the league’s all-defensive team — on the third. Grady, the A-10 Rookie of the Year and projected future NBA draft pick, scored 24 points in the opener thanks to five 3-pointers. Gudmundsson runs the offense and handed out seven assists with just one turnover, but is also a very good shooter (4-of-7 on 3-point attempts). The Wildcats hit the boards hard in the opener, nearly doubling up Cleveland State, 47-25, with 21 offensive boards. Davidson shoots well at the foul line and gener- ally ranks among the nation’s leaders by percent- age in that category. Bob McKillop (Hofstra ’72) is in his 30th season guiding the Wildcats and currently sports a 555-340 record (.620). The 2008 NABC National Coach of the Year and 10-time conference coach of the year (SoCon, A-10) has 22 conference titles (14 regular season, 8 tournament) and taken Davidson to the NCAA Tournament nine times. Big Green Men’s Basketball 2018-19Dartmouth College

Dartmouth at Davidson, Loyola — Nov. 9 / 11, 20182

Asst. Coach Pete HutchinsPlymouth State ’05 • 3rd year

Hutchins served as the head coach at New Hampton School — where he went to school — in New Hampton, New Hampshire, for nine years and earned NEPSAC AAA Coach of the year honors in

2015-16 after leading the Huskies to a 21-8 record. After studying for one year at UNH, Hutchins

completed his degree in history at Plymouth State in 2005. A team captain as a senior, he also helped the Panthers to a 24-6 record and the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament as a junior.

Dir. of Ops Ben DavisWheaton ’06 • 2nd year

A former assistant coach for McLaughlin at Stonehill, Davis joined the staff in October of 2017 after four years as the head coach at D-III Mount Ida.

The Mustangs improved their record in each of his

four years, culminating in 12 conference wins and a 17-10 overall record in 2016-17, leading to Davis’ selection as the GNAC Coach of the Year.

Davis was a four-year letter winner at Wheaton and was instrumental in ECAC Championship titles in 2005 and ’06.

Asst. Coach John AndrzejekColumbia ’14 • 1st year

Andrzejek begins his first year with the Green in 2018-19 after enjoying a terrific season as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the 24-5 Johns Hopkins squad.

In 2016-17, he was the di-rector of basketball operations at the University of San Francisco, which went 20-13 for the program’s second-most wins in a season in over 30 years.

A philosophy major, he graduated in 2.5 years from Columbia while serving as the Lions’ team man-ager before being hired as the director of operations.

Asst. Coach Justin BradleyGuilford ’13 • 2nd year

Originally hired in 2015 as a volunteer assistant, Bradley returns to Hanover after a two-year stint at Williams.

Bradley helped the Ephs advance to the NCAA D-III Final Four in 2017 and achieve

a top-five national ranking both years. Three play-ers earned All-NESCAC honors during his tenure, including 2018 Player of the Year James Heskett.

This past May, Bradley was listed as an honoree on the NABC Under Armour 30-Under-30 as an up-and-coming young coach.

Dartmouth Director of Athletics and Recreation Harry Sheehy announced on April 25, 2016 that David McLaughlin was hired as the 28th head coach of the Big Green men’s basketball program.

“It is my great pleasure to bring David on board

as our men’s basketball coach,” Sheehy said. “He brings a wealth of experience along with great passion for the game. He is a strong tactician with a terrific history of developing players. I could not be more excited looking to the future for Dartmouth men’s basketball.”

The first season of that future in 2016-17 had the Big Green in the race to qualify for the inau-gural Ivy League Tournament going into the final day of the season. Although Dartmouth ultimately came up short with a road loss to undefeated Princ-eton, McLaughlin had rewarded the Big Green faithful with an exciting season featuring a mostly youthful roster. Dartmouth finished the season 7-20 overall and 4-10 in the Ancient Eight, includ-ing just the second season sweep of Penn in the previous 58 years, while Evan Boudreaux earned all-district honors from both the National Associa-tion of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA).

McLaughlin came to Dartmouth after serving three years as the associate head coach and recruit-ing coordinator at Northeastern University, during which time the Huskies posted a combined record of 52-48. In 2014-15, he helped guide the Huskies to a 23-12 overall record and a regular season co-championship in the Colonial Athletic Association, as well as the CAA Tournament Championship to secure the school’s first bid to the NCAA Tourna-ment in 24 years.

Three of Northeastern’s players earned a total of five All-CAA honors, including Scott Eatherton who was the 2013-14 CAA Defensive Player of the year and Quincy Ford who garnered the CAA Tournament MVP award in 2014-15. McLaughlin also secured eight student-athletes for the classes of 2019 and 2020 from six different states, including Massachusetts, Florida and California.

Prior to his tenure at Northeastern, McLaughlin was the head coach at Division II Stonehill College in the Northeast-10 Conference. Under his tute-lage, the Skyhawks — which had been 11-45 in the two seasons before he took over — enjoyed terrific success with a combined 189-99 (.656) record in his nine-plus seasons (2004-13), including a 135-80 (.630) mark in conference play. Six times Stonehill won at least 20 games, topping out at 27 during the team’s run to the national semifinals in 2005-06.

The Skyhawks qualified for the NCAA Tourna-ment on five occasions (2006, ’09-12), twice win-ning the East Regional Championship to advance to the Division II Final Four (2006, ’12). McLaughlin also led Stonehill to two NE-10 regular-season

championships (2006, ’10) and an NE-10 Tourna-ment championship (2012), as well as a spot in the top-10 national rankings in four years.

The NABC Regional Coach of the Year in 2006 and 2011, and the NE-10 Coach of the Year in 2006 and 2010, McLaughlin is the all-time wins leader at Stonehill. He mentored a total of 14 All-North-east-10 Conference players, including three first-team selections, as well as a player who received the NCAA Elite 89 Award for having the highest cumulative grade point average among the teams competing at the 2012 Division II Elite Eight.

He produced three-straight NE-10 Defensive Players of the Year to highlight the program’s regular place atop the NE-10 and NCAA Division II defensive charts. Three Skyhawks earned NE-10 All-Rookie Team status during his tenure, and he produced three-straight NE-10 Defensive Players of the Year (2010-12).

McLaughlin was named Stonehill’s interim head coach in January 2004 after three-and-a-half seasons as an assistant coach, and hired on a per-manent basis later that year. In his first full season, he navigated the team to a 20-8 finish in 2004-05. Every one of his players graduated during his time as the head coach, spanning nearly a full decade.

Before joining the staff at Stonehill in 2000, McLaughlin served as an assistant coach at Wesley-an University for two seasons. He also spent time on the Suffolk University staff and was the head coach of the gold-medal-winning Northeast entry of the 1999 Bay State Games. McLaughlin served as a head coach at the Collegiate Basketball Invitational for four years, coaching top Division II senior players.

McLaughlin was a four-year letterwinner at Colby College, graduating in 1997 with a degree in history and going on to earn his Master of Educa-tion from Suffolk in 1999. In May 2000, McLaugh-lin earned partial certification from the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and is a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

He and his wife, Jenna, have three children — Sydney (11), Ryan (10) and Colin (8).

Series vs. loyola•Like the Davidson series, this is the fourth meeting

between the two teams — although every game has been within the last decade — with Dartmouth sporting a 1-2 mark against the Greyhounds.

•The Big Green got their first win over Loyola last year when Brendan Barry drove for the game-winning layup with 1.7 seconds left in a 64-63 victory (see box and recap on page 21).

•The other two games came in consecutive years (2009 and ’10) with the Greyhounds winning both by double digits.

•Dartmouth is 96-139 all-time against current Pa-triot League schools, with this being the first of two games against league teams this season (Boston U).

Scouting the greyhounds•Loyola, picked to finish 10th in the Patriot League

this year, fell behind by 25 points in the first half of its season opener at St. John’s before suffering a 76-55 defeat.

•The Greyhounds are coming off a 9-22 season in which they tied for eighth in the conference standings with a 6-12 mark.

•Although Loyola struggled from the floor against the Red Storm, hitting just 15-of-44 field goals (.341), it did win the battle on the boards (37-35) and got to the charity stripe often (22-of-32, .688).

•Three of the five players that scored in double figures last year are back in 2018-19 — Chuck Champion, Andrew Kostecka and Isaiah Hart.

•Kostecka led the Greyhounds on Tuesday with 17 points while Champion added 12, but Hart failed to score, missing all six of his field goal attempts.

•Loyola will need to do a better job of taking care of the ball to be successful, however, after cough-ing it up 24 times in the opener.

•The Greyhounds are under the guidance of first-year Tavaras Hardy (Northwestern ’02), the 21st head coach in program history. An All-Big Ten player, he arrives at Loyola after two seasons on the staff at Georgia Tech. Prior to that, he was an assistant at Georgetown for two years (2014-16) and his alma mater for seven seasons (2007-14).

records fall in Season openerDartmouth got a chance to see all 14 active play-

ers for a minimum of five minutes in the season-opening 114-39 victory over Division III Newbury. While the 114 points are “only” the second-most by a Big Green team, the 22 3-pointers, 31 assists, 64 rebounds, 61 first-half points (though the record for either half is 63), 45 3-point attempts and 82 field goal attempts all set new standards in the Dartmouth annals.

Barry Bombs AwayWithout Brendan Barry’s hot hand against New-

bury on Nov. 6, Dartmouth would not have been able to set the school record for 3-pointers (22, previous record was 18 against Albany on Jan. 20, 2001). The junior guard had his stroke going for him that night, canning 8-of-10 shots from behind the arc (one shy of the record) to post a career-high 26 points. It was just his second career foray over 20 points, a total he reached by halftime.

knight and DayChris Knight recorded his first career double-

double with 11 points and 10 rebounds in the season opener against Newbury, the latter figure also serving as a career high for the sophomore. This double-double is just the fourth by any current member of the Big Green squad, and first to come in a Dartmouth victory.

boy oh foyeMaking his first collegiate start in the season

opener was junior James Foye. He made the most of his starting slot, producing a career high with 18 points while matching another with eight rebounds. It was the first time Foye had scored in double figures in college as he also set personal bests with seven field goals and four triples.

hardly a SlajchertRookie Wes Slajchert wasted no time in show-

ing off his skills in the season opener, drilling four treys for 12 points, dishing out five assists, blocking three shots and stealing the ball twice. That’s a pretty full stat sheet, especially for someone whose name is pronounced SLACK-ert.

leeDe arenaThe arena is named in honor of Edward

Leede ’49 — one of Dartmouth’s all-time leading scorers and captain of the 1948-49 squad — and his family. The first game took place on Dec. 2, 1987 as Dartmouth beat Holy Cross, 89-63. The venue houses three regulation-size courts with retractable stands that seat 2,100 fans. Leede Arena has been sold out 31 times, most recently last season against Harvard on Jan. 20, just the second sellout in the last 17 years.

Big Green Men’s Basketball 2018-19Dartmouth College

5Dartmouth at Davidson, Loyola — Nov. 9 / 11, 2018

let’s not forget the DefenseLost in the staggering offensive numbers in the

season opener was the clamps put on by the defense. Newbury converted a mere 22.9 percent (16-of-70), the lowest for any Big Green opponent over the last 20 years. Dartmouth also held the Nighthawks to a mere six field goals and 15 points in the second half, the least allowed over the last 20 seasons.

Smith Hits 500Senior Guilien Smith did not have his best

game in the season opener, but still managed to score his 500th point on a second-half 3-pointer. He is the active career leader not only in points, but rebounds as well (143, tied with Will Emery).

Preseason PollDartmouth was pegged to finish eighth in the

preseason media poll. At the top is Harvard with 137 points and a dozen first-place votes, beating out Penn (122 points, five first-place votes) and Yale (115, one). Princeton is listed comfortably ahead of Brown for the fourth and final berth at the Ivy League Tournament with 92 points compared to the Bears’ 64. The bottom three shape up with Cor-nell (54), Columbia (43) and Dartmouth (21).

active leaderDespite missing all but three games last year,

senior Guilien Smith begins the 2018-19 season as the active career statistical leader on the team in several categories, including points (495) and rebounds (139). But when it comes to long-distance shooting, junior Brendan Barry is well ahead of his teammates with 78 triples to his credit at a sizzling rate of 44.6 percent.

Welcome Back CarterWhile Smith only played in three games a year

ago, forward Ian Carter missed out entirely on his sophomore season. As a freshman in 2016-17, he played in 19 games, averaging 2.1 points and 1.3 re-bounds. Dartmouth is hopeful that he can continue his development and provided the Big Green with some low-post presence on the glass.

oh Captains my CaptainsFor the first time in 19 years, and just fifth time

ever, Dartmouth will enter a basketball season with three captains guiding the squad. The players with the honor this season are senior Guilien Smith along with juniors James Foye and Ian Sistare, who just happen to be three of the four members of the team from New England. The last time the Big Green had three captains was in 1999-2000 with Chris Ellis, Shaun Gee and Jason Kemp leading the team.

200 trifectasLast year Dartmouth ripped exactly 200

3-pointers through the nets. It was the first time since 2002-03 that the Big Green had at least 200 long-range shots. That 2002-03 squad sank 221 in the last of four consecutive seasons with at least 200, topped the 2001-02 squad with 263.

Looking for a Lead at the HalfLast year, Dartmouth won all five of its contests

in which it had a lead at the half, but was 2-20 when trailing at the intermission, beating only Loyola (down seven) and Princeton (down one). The last Big Green loss when leading at the break was on Feb. 3, 2017, when the Tigers overcome a whopping one-point deficit after the first 20 minutes for a five-point win, 69-64. Since then, Dartmouth has won nine straight when either ahead or tied at halftime.

Glass WorkDartmouth failed to outrebound its opponents

last year, ending a streak of four straight seasons of having the advantage on the glass. What makes that so special is that before that four-year stretch, the Big Green had not had as many rebounds as their opponents for an entire season since the 1986-87 campaign.

international experienceTwo members of the Big Green hail from

outside of the United States — Isaac Letoa (New Zealand) and Aaryn Rai (Canada). Letoa even played for the New Zealand National Team (Junior Tall Backs), playing in the U19 FIBA World Cham-pionships in Cairo in July 2017.

transfer to Sit out SeasonTrevon Ary-Turner, a transfer from Weber

State, joined the Big Green this fall but won’t see any game action on the court due to NCAA transfer rules. Ary-Turner must sit out this season before resuming his eligibility in 2019-20 and is the second transfer for Dartmouth in the past five sea-sons. Quinten Payne sat out the 2014-15 campaign after arriving from Ball State.

fresh facesAside from Ary-Turner, Dartmouth welcomes

three members of the Class of 2022 to bolster the roster. Six-foot Taurus Samuels is a three-star point guard from Oceanside, California, who cap-tained his Vista High team to a 23-9 record while recording 19.6 points, 5.6 assists and 4.2 rebounds per game. Another guard, 6-5 Wes Slajchert, is also from California (Oak Park) and was the Ven-tura County Start Scholar-Athlete of the Year when

he captained his school to a 21-7 record by posting 10.7 points, 6.3 rebounds, 8.3 assists, 2.9 steals and 1.2 blocks per game last year. The Big Green also added a forward from Madison, Mississippi, in 6-6 Garrison Wade. Also a captain, he led his squad to the state championship and amassed 19 points and 19 rebounds in the title game to earn MVP honors.

How Long Ago Was 1959?Dartmouth made its first postseason appear-

ance in 57 years with its trip to the CIT in 2014-15. But the NCAA Tournament drought is at 59 years and counting. So just how long ago is that? It is long enough that:

Dartmouth 114NeWBuRy 39

Hanover, N.H. — Nov. 6, 2018

Dartmouth scored its second-most points ever while setting program records with 22 3-pointers and 31 assists in a 114-39 win over Division III New-bury. Brendan Barry had a career-high 26 points on 8-of-10 long balls to lead five players in double figures, and Chris Knight recorded his first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Junior James Foye also had a career night, doubling his previous best with 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting with four 3-pointers to go with eight rebounds. Adrease Jackson came off the bench to produce 14 points and nine boards, and rookie Wes Slajchert displayed his long-distance prowess by knocking down 4-of-6 from the perimeter for 12 points to go with five assists.

The teams traded triples to start the night, but Dartmouth quickly erased any doubt about the outcome of this one by scoring 28 of the next 30 points for a 31-5 lead.

Barry answered the next Nighthawk bucket by scoring the next 11 Big Green points in an 80-sec-ond span thanks to a trio of 3-pointers. By the inter-mission, he had 20 points, and Dartmouth did not slow down in the second half, matching its first-half total of 11 treys to help produce the second-largest winning margin in Big Green history.

DARtMOutH 64, LOyOLA 63Hanover, N.H. — Nov. 28, 2017

Brendan Barry drove for the winning layup high off the glass with 1.7 seconds to play to allow Dartmouth to nip Loyola, 64-63. Barry finished the game with 14 points, while Miles Wright added 13 and Chris Knight 11 off the bench.

Trailing 63-62 with 50 seconds to play after a pair of free throws by Loyola’s Cam Gregory, Barry launched a long three that caught only iron and went out of bounds to the Greyhounds with 21.3 seconds showing.

After a timeout, the Big Green quickly fouled Loyola’s leading scorer, Chuck Champion, who al-ready had a career-high 26 points on 12-of-15 shoot-ing after missing Loyola’s first five games. But the sophomore hit the back iron on the front end of the one-and-one, and Knight gobbled up the rebound.

The ball found its way into Barry’s hands, who drove to his right, floated the ball high off the glass for the 64-63 lead. Gregory’s desperation heave beyond halfcourt was on line, but only grazed the front of the rim as Dartmouth defeated the Grey-hounds for the first time in three tries.

The Big Green trailed by as many as 13, but Wright scored 11 of his 13 points within a 3:15 span bridging the two halves to knot the score at 33.

The Green finally reclaimed the lead, 45-44, on a Knight turnaround jumper with 12:51 left. The lead would change 10 more times down the stretch with neither side going up by more than three points.
