About DartingtonDartington is a place of learning and experiment. We act in three broad areas: the arts, the promotion of a fairer society and the future of our planet. Working in partnership with pioneering thinkers, teachers, artists and social entrepreneurs, Dartington addresses some of the significant issues of our time. We do this in three ways•by setting up our own initiatives and programmes,

building on our skills, resources and heritage •by offering the time, space and stimulation for

others to develop and test promising ideas •by inspiring a wide community of artists,

thinkers and activists through our work and the exceptional environment we provide

Dartington is an independent organisation, trading ethically and sustainably as a social enterprise in order to fund our pioneering work.

[15]DIRECTOR: Pedro AlmodóvarCAST: Javier Cámara, Pepa Charro, Cecilia RothSpain 2013 | Subtitles | 1hr 30mA plane full of uptight passengers is stranded in the air after its landing gear jams. The undaunted team of metrosexual flight crew do their best to alleviate the tension and keep everyone happy while they find somewhere safe to attempt a crash landing. Almodóvar’s long awaited return to comedy is a bawdy and beautifully made chamber piece that is a pure delight. Beware of Mr. Baker [Cert. TBC]DIRECTOR: Jay BulgerCAST: Ginger Baker, Eric Clapton, Femi Kuti, John LydonUSA 2013 | Documentary | 1hr 32mWhen a documentary begins with its subject using his crutch to deliver a vicious blow to the director’s nose, it’s reasonably safe to expect less-than-smooth sailing ahead. Ginger Baker, Cream’s legendary scarlet-maned, hell-raising drummer, looks back on his musical career with some of the world’s greatest musicians, as well as his influence on great musical eccentrics like John ‘Jonny Rotten’ Lydon. As impressive as his virtuoso musical talent is, it’s the man himself who proves the most transfixing. A remarkably candid document of an important musical figure, and a searing portrait of a man in freefall doing his best to destroy any human relationship he can as he drums on into personal oblivion. A stunning film.

Aguirre, Wrath of God [PG]DIRECTOR: Werner HerzogCAST: Klaus Kinski, Cecilia Rivera, Ruy Guerra, West Germany 1972 | Subtitles | 1hr 31mIn the 16th century, the expedition of Spanish conquistador Gonzalo Pizarro searches the impenetrable jungles of Peru for signs of El Dorado, the fabled seven cities of gold. Crazed with greed and mad with power, Aguirre, one of the nobles in command, takes over the enterprise, slaughtering any that oppose him. Based on the real-life journals of a priest, Brother Gaspar de Carvajal, who accompanied Pizarro on his ill-fated mission, this epic historical drama was legendary for the arduousness of its on-location filming and the convincing zealous obsession employed by Kinski in playing the title role.

The head of the shipping company, Peter Ludvigsen, immediately hires a professional negotiator, then disregards the expert’s advice and insists on dealing with the pirates himself. As the weeks drag on with no end in sight, it’s clear that the job is much more than Ludvigsen bargained for. Tobias Lindholm (writer of the celebrated Danish TV series Borgen, and co-writer of The Hunt) has created a grittily authentic and suspenseful thriller that’s also a fascinating window into the phenomenon of modern piracy.

Something in the Air [Cert. TBC]DIRECTOR: Olivier AssayasCAST: Clément Métayer, Lola Créton, Felix ArmandFrance 2012 | Subtitles | 2hrs 2mAssayas’ semi-autobiographical feature is a vibrant, incisively crafted story of a young man’s awakening of conscience. Paris, 1971; Gilles, a 17-year-old high school student, is an aspiring filmmaker, painter of considerable talent, and political activist. He and his friends distribute leaflets, contribute articles to left-wing magazines, and spray-paint graffiti slogans on walls. After a protest becomes violent, Gilles and his girlfriend, Christine, leave the country for Italy. On the road with a group of activist filmmakers, Gilles’ coming-of-age truly begins. With a magnificent rock soundtrack, Assayas has created a wonderfully evocative time capsule of the turbulent French student movement of the early ‘70s.

This House - LIVEfrom the National TheatreThursday 16 May, 7pmEncore Performances: Tuesday 21 May, 2pmDuration: 2hrs 45m approx (with interval)Tickets £17.50 / Encore £12.50It’s 1974 and the corridors of Westminster ring with the sound of infighting and backbiting as Britain’s political parties battle to change the future of the nation, whatever it takes. In this hung parliament, the ruling party holds on by a thread. Votes are won and lost by one, fist fights erupt in the bars, and ill MPs are hauled in to cast their votes. James Graham’s biting, energetic and critically-acclaimed new play strips politics down to the practical realities of those behind the scenes who roll up their sleeves and, on occasion, bend the rules, to manoeuvre a diverse and conflicting chorus of MPs within the Mother of all Parliaments.

Dartington Community Choir Summer Concert Directed by Jonathan WattsSunday 16 June3pm, Great HallTickets: £15 / Concessions £14 / Students & U16’s £6Brahms and Schumann represent the high art of the German Romantic period. As well as being great writers for the orchestral tradition they were also drawn to vocal music. In this concert we contrast the four songs for double chorus by Schumann with Brahms’s first cycle of Love-song Waltzes.

Schumann drew on texts by Ruckert, Goethe and Zedlitz for these double-choir songs, whereas Brahms’s inspiration was texts from Polydora by Friedrich Daumer. Schuman wrote his four songs, Opus 141, in 1849 and Brahms’s Op 52 was written in 1868. The Schumann pieces have no separate piano accompaniment whereas the Brahms uses piano duet to great effect and therefore we are delighted that our two pianists will also include piano duets in this concert.

HiresGuildhall School of Music & Drama – Innovative Conservatoire Conference

The Innovative Conservatoire is an international collaboration bringing teachers from music conservatoires together to share and explore practice, reflect, research and innovate.

The Innovative Conservatoire uses reflective practice and action research to address the challenges of development at the heart of conservatoire education, and to position creative and performing artists’ practice more centrally within the global knowledge economy.

This year’s theme is the Craft of Collaboration. Why is collaboration important? How does it work and what tendencies do we see? What can we contribute ourselves? What kind of skills and knowledge do we want to develop further? This will be the topic of this seminar.

GardensDartington’s beautiful Grade II* Listed gardens are open dawn to dusk, throughout the year for all to enjoy. With a rich sense of history and a host of delightful features – from a new bridge by artist Peter Randall Page to a sculpture by Henry Moore to 500 year old Spanish Chestnut trees – the gardens at Dartington are free to explore all year round. Please consider a voluntary donation of £5 per person to help us with the considerable costs of maintaining the gardens. Groups of 10 or more are asked to call 01803 847058 to make arrangements or email [email protected]. Please note that dogs are not allowed in the gardens except assistance dogs. A picnic area is available in front of the Roundhouse Café and next to the Visitor Centre and refreshments and outside seating are available at the White Hart.
