What’s On: May/JunWelcome to the May/June Edition of What’s On at the Dartington Hall Estate. Schumacher College has an evening all about Wild Swimming as part of The Earth Talks. Come and join them on 13 June for a talk from wild swimmer Daniel Start followed by a dip in the Dart if you dare! The Barn Cinema continues live streaming, on 24 June Benjamin Britten’s ‘Gloriana’ will be shown live from the Royal Opera House. At the end of June we have our third Tagore festival which celebrates poetry, dance and literature influenced by the great thinker and poet, Rabindranath Tagore.I do hope that you and your family will be able to join us on Sunday 2 June for our Community Day. The day looks set to provide an array of entertainment, so bring along a picnic and join in the fun!

Belarus Free TheatreBelarus Free Theatre is an underground group based in Minsk, speaking out through their creative voices. During March and April, The Arts at Dartington welcomed the company for a month-long residency. Belarus Free Theatre is forced to act as ‘underground’ due to Belarus being run as a dictatorship, where freedom of speech is not allowed. Belarus Free Theatre will be performing the work resulting from their residency at The Dartington Hall Trust on stages around the world. Visit the GardensEvery time of year is a good time to visit the gardens at Dartington but Spring is amongst the most spectacular. Come for a wander round the grounds and gardens and spot the beautiful tree magnolias, camellias, and snake’s head fritillaries in the woodland walks. Right now the cherry blossom is in bud and is just about to appear in all its glory. After you’ve worked up an appetite you can head to the White Hart for some hearty food or nip to the Roundhouse café for tea and cake! And don’t forget to pop into the Visitor Centre where the staff can update you on the all the latest information about what is going on around the Estate.

Barn CinemaWelcome to our film selection for May and June; we have some real treats in store for you!

Our first ever Spring Film Festival begins on 30 May (see page 14), bringing you four days of film in celebration of our natural world and some of its indigenous communities. As well as film screenings in the Barn, there will be outdoor films, footage from the Dartington archive, live commentary, and films for children – one of which includes a live stage show from Dartmoor Zoo.

Elsewhere in the programme we have our usual choice of the best films from around the world. Worth a special note is The Great Gatsby 3D, which will have a two week run at the Barn from its UK release date. Our ever-expanding live cinema programme features a unique new event from the British Museum: Pompeii Live, and a season of six fantastic operas from Glyndebourne Festival 2013.

Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting) reunites with Matt Damon, who also co-produced and wrote the script with John Krasinkski in this thoughtful and intelligent drama.

It includes cameos for long-time collaborators Penélope Cruz and Antonio Banderas in a very funny opening scene.

As impressive as his virtuoso musical talent is, it’s the man himself who proves the most transfixing. A remarkably candid document of an important musical figure, and a searing portrait of a man in freefall doing his best to destroy any human relationship he can as he drums on into personal oblivion. A stunning film.

He and his friends distribute leaflets, contribute articles to left-wing magazines, and spray-paint graffiti slogans on walls. After a protest becomes violent, Gilles and his girlfriend, Christine, leave the country for Italy. On the road with a group of activist filmmakers, Gilles’ coming-of-age truly begins. With a magnificent rock soundtrack, Assayas has created a wonderfully evocative time capsule of the turbulent French student movement of the early ‘70s.

Dartington Community Choir Summer Concert Directed by Jonathan WattsSunday 16 June3pm, Great HallTickets: £15 / Concessions £14 / Students & U16’s £6Brahms and Schumann represent the high art of the German Romantic period. As well as being great writers for the orchestral tradition they were also drawn to vocal music. In this concert we contrast the four songs for double chorus by Schumann with Brahms’s first cycle of Love-song Waltzes.

Schumann drew on texts by Ruckert, Goethe and Zedlitz for these double-choir songs, whereas Brahms’s inspiration was texts from Polydora by Friedrich Daumer. Schuman wrote his four songs, Opus 141, in 1849 and Brahms’s Op 52 was written in 1868. The Schumann pieces have no separate piano accompaniment whereas the Brahms uses piano duet to great effect and therefore we are delighted that our two pianists will also include piano duets in this concert.

Growing a reputation for making music that is intricate, energising and beautiful, flux are a band made up of six incredibly versatile musicians playing instruments ranging from Piano to Bansuri, Double Bass to Cajon, and Violin to Synths.

Fresh from the Southbank’s Alchemy Festival, Flux will be performing their new work at this year’s Tagore Festival.

Basketry and Beyond International Artists ResidencyMonday 18 to Sunday 24 May

To support the Basketry and Beyond Festival, Immerse is supporting a 3 week residency at Space to provide a unique opportunity for makers from Canada, Spain, Japan and the UK to work together to produce light robust openwork forms, some on a large scale.

Focussing on the relationship of the work to the landscape, the resulting work will be sited in the Gardens at Dartington Hall where it will be displayed over the festival weekend and during the summer months.

The Innovative Conservatoire uses reflective practice and action research to address the challenges of development at the heart of conservatoire education, and to position creative and performing artists’ practice more centrally within the global knowledge economy.

This year’s theme is the Craft of Collaboration. Why is collaboration important? How does it work and what tendencies do we see? What can we contribute ourselves? What kind of skills and knowledge do we want to develop further? This will be the topic of this seminar.

GardensDartington’s beautiful Grade II* Listed gardens are open dawn to dusk, throughout the year for all to enjoy. With a rich sense of history and a host of delightful features – from a new bridge by artist Peter Randall Page to a sculpture by Henry Moore to 500 year old Spanish Chestnut trees – the gardens at Dartington are free to explore all year round. Please consider a voluntary donation of £5 per person to help us with the considerable costs of maintaining the gardens. Groups of 10 or more are asked to call 01803 847058 to make arrangements or email [email protected]. Please note that dogs are not allowed in the gardens except assistance dogs. A picnic area is available in front of the Roundhouse Café and next to the Visitor Centre and refreshments and outside seating are available at the White Hart.

The Dartington Hall Estate is located 1 mile from Totnes in the heart of South Devon.

By Train: Dartington is a 25 mins walk or a short taxi ride from Totnes Railway Station.

By Bus: Nearby Totnes is served by the National Express and local services. Dartington is served by the Stagecoach service #165 from the main bus stop in Totnes (outside Morrisons). Info on 0870 6082608 or www.countrybusdevon.co.uk.

By Bike: There are bike parks available at Dartington; if you plan to use these please bring your own lock.

By Car: We are 30 minutes south of Exeter and north of Plymouth on the M5/A38. From the A38 follow signs to Totnes. On-site parking is available. Pay and Display parking on site is 30p per hour. £1 flat rate from 4pm applies on the main estate.

On Foot: A level footpath runs from Totnes station along the river before turning right onto the Dartington Hall drive for the last (hilly) 3/4 mile.
