According to the regulatory requirements in

Ukraine, one of the main demands in the design of

kindergarten is to provide such a planning structure in

which paths of different age groups of children must

not overlap. This requirement entails very tough

resolution function between rooms of different

children groups. These conditions cause excessive, in

my opinion, a closed prison-like type of inner

structure. Needless to say, the sustainable

development of children in such conditions is

impossible. Therefore, I have developed a planning

scheme whereby each group of children will be

provided with everything necessary for autonomous

existence in an enclosed structure.

Besides, access to the common areas is independent

and same for all groups. Fun and surprising featuring

in gaming zones is the presence of a kind of

"windows" to the nearby gaming area. That little

details will help to get rid of the feeling of isolation

and create informal contacts between different

children. A particular feature of the kindergarten is a

common area for all children, consisting of a medical

unit and a sport zone with a swimming pool. This

block plus facilities for administration and staff are

formed as a separate unit that completes the concept

of creating a conventionally separated clusters of

different groups of buildings in a single volume .

The basic principle in this design for me was to

provide students with comfortable living conditions

and separate the dormitory from the hustle and

bustle of the city. For this purpose, a site was chosen

on the Hlybochytskiy ravine slopes in Kiev. Site is

separated from the outer city with the historic low-

rise housing buildings and is surrounded by green

areas. Such conditions provide an ideal opportunity

for the formation of the enclosed cluster system. The

concept of the formation was developed in an

interaction of communication specics in residential

buildings.

Thus was formed a system in which students’ living

spaces were separated with public areas, which were

actually stuck to small groups of dwellings and then

formed relationships with other similar formations.

General layout on which ties were performed and

which were used to orient building facilities, are

located so as to create favorable conditions for

students needs and other factors. In general, there

was developed a system of intersectioned spaces in

which however, the chamber environments was

preserved, that guarantees good living conditions.

The objective of this project was to create a

residential unit within the previously designed

neighborhood in the city of Kiev. Taking into account a

master plan decisions taken about the specic

structure of residential development and regulatory

requirements of typological specics of the project, I

made a decision to slightly modify the idea of how the

high – rise housing building should look like.

The primary key of this project concept is construction

in length, but not in height. However, so we did not

come out with the long sausage several oors height,

I have developed a system, which sets this long blocks

in height with discontinuitie and change their

orientation. Growing up to several levels along the z -

axis, revolving around structural cores built between

these elements, formed a complex but a justied

structure. A side benet of this system proved to be a

formative ability to create additional public spaces

using horizontal roof elements that can compensate

the territory involved for erecting the building itself.

This project was designed in collaboration with

Nazar Gresko. My task was to develop an Ice Arena. I

tried to create a new unit in the context of our city-

specic project direction. One of the key reasons of

the Arena main idea (to modify the design task and

execute it as a new urban planning unit) was because

on the opposite shore of the bay Nazar had

developed his project- an Aquatic center. We decided

to combine our efforts, that resulted in a complex

design idea of rehabilitation of former industrial

areas including a former soviet “Lenin`s forge”

shipyard.

Considering that the scale of buildings was large

enough, we have decided to combine our two

projects into a single composite architecture

ensemble that gave rise to the decision to develop a

multifunctional platform over the whole bay, which

served not only as a unifying element but also as the

main compositional axis. Inside the platform we have

conceived to accommodate functional spaces of

Water and Ice centers, parking and transport line.

Operated roof platform is used as a park and a

recreation space over the bight of Dnipro river.

Compositional element that completes the platform

and balances the composition of the whole complex is

a 60 - meter high-rise hotel building.

Architectural form of the Ice center is conditioned to

the total composition, which is characterized by the

use of simple forms. Object appeares as a circle in

plan and as the hemisphere in volume. Such form

provides sufcient space to accommodate the

icerings both for runners and for hockey and stands

with a total capacity of 15 000 spectators.

Structurally volume is designed as a structure

formed by cross-hinged beams made of glued

beams with a section 1.5 m high and 0.75 m wide.

The spatial structure of the building allows to create

an interior space with no visible supports and

makes a big impression on visitors.

WORKSHOP PROJECTSUMMER 2012 SUPERVISOR PROF. VADIM ZAPLATNIKOV [email protected].

19

Page 22: Daria Tsapenko Architectural Portfolio

This project is the result and nal result of an

architectural workshop impressed with novel of

Taras Prohasko "UnSimple". The main objective of

this summer architecture school was analysis of

the work of the writer and further visualization of

utopian city of Juniper in the Carpathian

Mountains, on the Yablunytsya pass, created by

the author and described in his novel.

Personally, I was extremely pleased to work on this

project, after all, we were not restrained by any

rules, regulations only by our imagination. I must

note that this unique spirit of this workshop was

inuenced by a wonderful work of the famous

Ukrainian writer and the atmosphere of the

Carpathian mountains, in fact, we all were fully

immersed. The result of all these factors was my

idea to create the dream city.

This idea was embodied in the form of illustrated

panels - City Panorama. It depicted all areas of the

city, its transport network, attractions and all that, of

course, linked to one of the most picturesque piece of

the Carpathian Mountains – Pope Ivan. The process of

expression this urban fantasy was very exciting and

informative.

The aim of the second part of the workshop was to

develop an object from this imaginary city for its

further implementation in reality. There had been a

competition, and my work was selected as the best,

and therefore - it had to be erected.

The idea of an object "Stairway to Heaven" was to

create a facility that would allegorical illustrate the

spirit of the Carpathian mountains. Following this

idea I had created an object, which allowed to climb

into the sky and watch the clouds and obsorb the

winds of nature.

As a utility this object serves as a kind of viewing

platform and temporary shelter for travelers and

shepherds. Standing solitary in the midst of

mountains and taking its audience in heights, this

object will be, I hope, a local attraction and a

reection of freedom and lightness of the Ukrainian

spirit.

The nal part of the summer school was to a work on

a comic book that illustrated the main events and the

people who participated in theprogram. This work

was a revelation to me in certain, because since

childhood I had wanted to illustrate the book, and it

actually happened. This event created in me the

understanding of the cases that I would like to

dedicate my life to. Since then, inseparably for me is

studying architecture, my main passion and working

as an illustrator. The kind of activity that inspires me.

This project is one of my greatest professional

achievements and was the rst and so far only in its

scope and grandeur. The history of it is long and

thorny as it was my rst experience with such level of

responsibility. It all started with a proposal from the

design studio "Dream Design" to create sketches of

painting at the various areas of modern school in

Kiev, "NOVOPECHERSKA school" which opened its

doors to students in September 2014. I have created

a set of various skethes for school classrooms and in

fact, one was the idea of large-scale image in the

dining room. It was panorama of Kyiv. Fortunately, I

met full understanding and support from the

customers and started working.

Work process on this project lasted more than a

month and was extremely innovative for me, as it

needed accurate calculations placing elements and

vectorize them for further work on the giant 24 m long

single wallprint.

To implement the idea more than 250 unique items

were created, each was painted with hands on A3

format tracing paper. It was actually an illustrated

catalog of all the main attractions of Kiev and lots of

other items, including 50 different aircrafts created

and illustrated by Nazar Gresko.

Generally, as my professional partner Nazar brought

a lot to this project and without him it would be

probably impossible to nish the project. While I was

responsible for creating the concept and for drawing

most of the illustrated work, Nazar helped me to

create the overall composition, and developed a

method to transfer pictures, hand-made in vector

form and made the underlying basis for further work

with them.

Overall, the project was very successful and

appreciated that primarily important for its main

users - young children.
