ARTS ALIVE MAY 15, 2020

Dear Dapplegray Colts,The closure of our schools in March forced us to re-think learning and living. All of our lives have changed in some way these last two months, but one thing remains – the spirit and strength of our Dapplegray family. Arts Alive is a treasured tradition of Dapplegray Elementary School. In 2007, former Dapplegray parents Kris Skeie, Nancy Shafer, and Jane Calvert wanted to expose their children to the thrill of the arts while they were young, curious, and adventurous. They created the “Arts Alive and Writer’s Workshop” for third through fifth graders and a small Art Walk with six to eight creative people performing as the students passed by. Today, Arts Alive has grown into a full-day program bringing over 40 artist presenters to campus who teach students a variety of arts, including visual arts, dramatic arts, martial arts, culinary arts, photography, videography, dance, yoga, writing, music, screen writing, fashion design, graphic design, and storytelling. Arts Alive still includes an Art Walk with 15 to 20 creative people performing and talking with students about their talents. This year, Arts Alive looks and feels a little different, but the Dapplegray PTA and Booster Club are very proud and honored to bring you the first ever Virtual Arts Alive! We are deeply grateful to the artists who are donating their time to bring the ARTS ALIVE to our students from home on May 15, 2020. Enjoy the day and stay healthy and safe! And remember, together or apart, we are all Colts at heart!

Instructions for this Directory:Please review this directory with your student(s) on Monday or Tuesday. Have your student(s) choose 2-4 workshops to participate in throughout the day and plan your day accordingly. Note the age appropriateness of each workshop. For some workshops, you may need to gather some supplies ahead of time at home such as pencils, paper, markers, paints, or crayons. Some Zoom workshops have a limited capacity so as not to overwhelm the artists presenters. Most Zoom classes require you to sign up ahead of time via Signup Genius (links provided in directory). Zoom meeting IDs and passwords will then be emailed to students that are signed up in advance. All links are hyperlinked for your convenience. Most Zoom workshop presenters will be recording their workshops and will re-post them to a private link on YouTube. We will make those links available for viewing at a later time. Please note, some workshops require a supply pick up in the afternoon on Wednesday, May 13. We kindly ask that your student sign up for only one class that requires supply pick up. Signups for workshops are on a first-come, first-served basis. When workshops reach maximum capacity, we regret that we cannot allow additional attendees.

Please contact [email protected] if you have any questions.

Technical Considerations:• All online workshops will require an internet connection.• You will need a Zoom account to participate in the Zoom workshops.• If the Zoom Meeting ID, link, or password do not work after several tries, please log out of Zoom and log

back in and try again. Or, try logging in to Zoom on a different device.• Please have your student follow all remote learning rules that your student’s teachers have implemented,

e.g. no virtual backgrounds, use students’ real names or family names in the profile, and students must placethemselves on mute when not speaking directly to the presenter.

• The YouTube links are private links created especially for Dapplegray students and we kindly ask that younot share them with non-Dapplegray students.

• Vimeo videos may require a password which are provided in the directory.

For technical difficulties or questions: please contact Holly Woesner at [email protected] or (949) 400-9105.

Rad Radials with artist, Emily Tanaka

Students will learn about radial design and how it is abundant in nature. They will create and color their own radial design pattern while being inspired by timelapse examples and music by local musician Karl Grossman. Materials: lightweight cardboard approximately 4 x 3 inches, paper, pencil with eraser, scissors, crayons, markers, colored pencils, and music to listen to while creating (optional).

All Grades WORKSHOP LINK

Always an artist, Emily Tanaka spent her childhood exploring the woods outside her rural Indiana home, climbing trees to get a different perspective and spending hours observing the natural wonders around her. After graduating college with majors in painting and graphic design, she migrated to Chicago and landed a graphic design job in educational publishing. Inspired by the dizzying chaos of the city, Emily began showing her artwork in pop-up events, cafes and local art shows. Eventually, she met the man who would later become her husband, but he lived across the country in Redondo Beach. In 2001, she made the trek to Los Angeles, continuing her design career and began showing her art in TAG gallery in Santa Monica. Starting a family brought new roles and creative outlets. Emily is currently painting murals in schools and businesses while continuing to show and sell her artwork. Still heavily inspired by nature, her work combines spray paint and acrylic paint in a colorful abstract and symbolic painting style.

Laura Millman always loved art as a child and enjoyed drawing, painting, crafts, and everything creative. She learned to sew in seventh grade and soon developed a passion for making her own clothes. Laura pursued an education in fashion design and was awarded a scholarship to her dream school, The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles. She graduated with an AA Degree in Fashion Design and started working immediately in the Los Angeles fashion industry. Assisting in sales presentations and travel were a big part of her design duties which she also enjoyed. Laura eventually opened her own apparel company, Best of Chums, which specialized in boutique and specialty store infant and toddler apparel selling to all major specialty stores nationwide. She ran this company for 9 years before selling it so that she could spend more time with her 2 young daughters. She continues to freelance design for her former company to this day, but she has now shifted gears from children’s clothing to the company’s newest division, Tail Trends, which specializes in apparel accessories for dogs and cats. She finds this rewarding and a lot of fun. Check out the company’s website, Tailtrends.com or their Instagram site, @Tailtrendsla. It’s sure to bring a smile to your face to see all the happy pets wearing Laura’s creations. Laura’s advice to all aspiring designers - Always follow your dream!

After 20 years touring 6 continents as half of legendary Los Angeles hip-hop group, People Under The Stairs, Christopher retired earlier this year with the release of their final album debuting as the number one rap album in the US and capping an extraordinary career that included appearances on The Simpson’s 20th Anniversary Special, a John Peele Session at Abbey Road, numerous chartings on Billboard, and groundbreaking headline performances at worldwide festivals such as Glastonbury, Coachella, Bottlerock, Governors Ball, Bonaroo, and many more. With touring in the past, Christopher continues to work as a music producer, teacher, and mentor to younger artists aspiring to remain independent in the world of entertainment.

Learn to be a Music Producer with Chris Portugal

Join Chris Portugal as he explains what a Music Producer is and does in the studio and explores the many layers of Queen’s wonderful song “Bohemian Rhapsody.” For added enjoyment, please listen to all or part of the song Bohemian Rhapsody prior to watching if you are unfamiliar with it. In this instance Freddie Mercury is both the song writer and the Music Producer.

By using the analogy of a chef who oversees ingredients going in to a cake, Chris works in reverse order to expose the many ingredients or layers - in this case the 24 tracks from the original Queen 2” tape - to explain how a music producer can bring a song to life by organizing the performance into layers (tracks) and bringing the art of the music to life in the final, stereo Master version for the audience to enjoy.

We realized the importance of small business and service with non-profits in our community growing up, and over the years, discovered the power that storytelling could have on those organizations. We have adopted the mission of#movingforeword, to help move our clients and partners forward in their business while also growing and developing ourselves along the way, without losing sight of what got us to where we are today. Photographing a Portrait with Yvette Gallardo D’Elia In the photography lesson, we want students to learn about how to take a great portrait by using the available light and learning how to “see” their subject, how to position their subject and their camera. We will show you some tricks on how to use available light to make a big difference in the overall impact of your portrait.

Materials: You can use a digital SLR camera or smartphone or device for this workshop. Your camera does not need to have manual settings; a photo reflector or a white poster board no larger than 16X20; a chair; a model; a space where you have natural light and shade.

Yvette Gallardo D’Elia is a fine art photographer and native of Santa Monica. She first discovered photography when her father allowed her to document their family life with his Canon A-E1. What followed were years in dark rooms, hand-developing film and printing mostly black and white images of her relatives and friends. After graduating from the Annenberg School of Communication at the University of Southern California, Yvette worked professionally before moving to New York City. There, she studied at the International Center of Photography and assisted Rolling Stone Magazine’s chief photographer, Mark Seliger, at his West Village studio. It was in Seliger’s studio where she deepened her appreciation for the character portrait. Her fine art portrait work is often socio-political in nature. Her solo show, “The Casting Call” exhibited at The Players in Gramercy Park that featured twenty actresses portrayed in stereotypical roles to illuminate the gender and cultural bias that exists in film, television, and theatre. She has shot stills for various studios including the short “Irene and Marie” and the Academy Award-winning “The Artist.” Yvette enjoys working in various mediums of visual art, including short-film cinematography and, recently, oil painting. She considers visual storytelling one of life’s greatest pleasures. She has returned to her native Los Angeles with her husband and two school-aged sons.

Richard D’Elia hails from Long Island, New York. His first job was as a sports producer at News 12 - Long Island. Although he earned a Master’s degree in Communication at NYIT, Richard says he learned most of his practical skills on the job. He won a Foilo Award for his piece on Roosevelt High, a poorly-run high school on Long Island. In October 1996, he joined a fledgling Fox News Channel as a breaking news cameraman and has been there ever since. He has covered many of the major political, sports, natural disasters, and world events of the past quarter century. Some coverage has included: Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy, the years-long aftermath of 9/11, five Presidential election cycles, six World Series, five Super Bowls, U.S. Space Shuttle launches, Brexit in the United Kingdom, Papal visits, the Migrant Caravan throughout Mexico to the U.S. Border, and the yearly California Wildfires. His camera has traveled far and wide: from Alaska to Rome, to each state in the U.S., and the little towns in between. Although he has shot interviews with many lauded filmmakers, newsmakers, heads of state, politicians, and U.S. Presidents, Richard is most impressed by the regular person who is pleasant and can speak on camera without getting nervous. He is an ardent Yankee fan and never tires of watching the films of Akira Kurosawa or listening to the music of Kurt Cobain. He is now living in Rancho Palos Verdes with his family and is grateful to no longer have to take the Subway to work or cover a New York Fashion Week ever again. His advice to students who want to work as news journalists: become effective communicators, arrive early, wear comfortable shoes, and remember that the shade is your friend.

Celinda (CC) Rechsteiner, born with a physical disability (Cerebral Palsy), has experienced rejection due to being different. She also has experienced being accepted by others once they understand that her disability is no big deal and she is just like them. Therefore, through her story “Apollo With His Friends In Colorland,” she wants to share both of her experiences with young children - that is, how everyone is special the way they are. Despite CC’s experience of rejection, she has a great group of friends, graduated from a University with a BA degree and from Trinity Law School, ran the L. A. marathon and the Disney one-half marathon, is a Deaconess at her Church, and works for the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.
