We all need goods from basic to the most luxurious. Some people claim that people should
be spurred to buy more consumer goods to develop economy while others claim that it can
reduce personal saving. My essay will discuss both sides of the issue toward individuals and
society.
It is, first, argued that a higher amount of consumer consumption is beneficial for social
development. The more people buy goods, the more economy thrives. With more tax
collected from industries and daily spending of each individual, governments have money to
upgrade facilities and invest in key projects. However, can the society really develop when
people overspend their budget? As a result of the fact that intensive campaigns ubiquitously
appear in the market to imbue people with the idea of purchasing consumer goods more,
people's personal savings are reduced significantly, heralding their early bankruptcy.
America is a telling country where consumer good spending exceeds personal savings,
leading to a current financial crisis in 2007.
Equally important, to some extent, people's consumption of consumer goods is the action of
self-satisfaction. No sooner do people work assiduously than they should kill their stress by
burying them into the amidst of practical commodities. The appearance of goods from body
soaps, perfumes, shampoo to food packages really satiates their desire and facilitates their
lives amazingly. Basically, we all want to enjoy, and the more we buy, the more companies
are supposed to rankle their brains to come up with more convenient items to meet such

growing demand. Turn back to the example of America, a nation where witnesses the non-
stop refinement of products in terms of design, material and price by dint of its citizens' thirst
for more high-quality consumer goods. Nevertheless, this trend might put our environment in
danger. Can you imagine how the world turns out to be with tons of waste released into the
atmosphere on a daily basis? Plastic boxes and solid waste are enough to hurt environment
to the point that the number of people suffering contaminated air and other respiration-
related diseases is increasing. Even worse, natural resources are depleted cruelly and
ceaselessly to catch up with people's greed for cheap consumer goods. Psychologically
speaking, the idea of instilling into people the desire to buy more and more consumer
products can deprive people of their own inner voice. Not all of us want to spend more than
save and purchase the same products televised on media as well. While some are crazy for
the latest version of consumer products, others are interested in their plan to conserve
natural environment. Please do not assimilate people into the same mindset: to have more
consumer goods. Save the world and save our soul- the message that environmentalists
actually love to spread.
