Chapter 1

Way that becomes the Way,

Transcends the ordinarily manifested Way.

Name that becomes the Name,

Transcends the ordinarily manifested Name.

The unmanifesting name of Heaven and Earth's Origin,

Is the manifesting name of the Feminine mother of all.

Reason of its constantly dissolving desire,

Is observed the profoundness of its beauty.

The constant manifesting desire,

Results in observation of its surging surface.

This dualistic nature,

Together emits the varied names,

Togetherness is named profoundness.

The profoundness's profundity,

All wondrousness’s Entrance.

Under Heaven, its uniformly known Beauty's guidance as Beauty, And in that way, is known Ugliness. All know Goodness as Goodness's guide, And in that way, is known the not Good. In that established way, The manifested and the unmanifested is mutually born, Difficulty and ease do mutually complete, The tall and short do mutually interact, The high and the below do mutually incline, The musical sounds are in mutuality harmonious, The forward and behind do follow each other along.

So the wise sage in unmanifested intent does, Working in teachings without intent and words; The myriad of things are placed without diction, Born and not made manifest, Guided and not relied on, Work completed and not resided in. For the man does not reside, Its result never passes.

Chapter 3

Wealth not exalted,

Amongst people no quarrell;

Not prizing the hard to procure,

Amongst people no stealing;

Not seeing the desirous,

And no chaos in their hearts.

Therefore the wise sage's governing,

Empties their hearts, fills their abdomen,

Makes lighter their will, stronger their bones.

Always actualizing amongst people

The unmanifested knowledge and the

Unmanifested desire.

Actualizing those with knowledge

To not be guided by daring.

In guidance of the unmanifested guidance,

In that unmanifesting pattern, is no need for governing.
