TOWN ART GALLERY CELEBRATES SUCCESSFUL FIRST YEARA year ago, I announced in this message that the Town would beexpanding its cultural arts offerings along with the completionof the Village Theatre lobby renovation and expansion. Inretrospect, it’s clear that I underestimated the extent to whichthis capital improvement project would enhance the Danvillearts scene.

With the opening of the Town’s Art Gallery last November withthe Charles M. Schulz Peanuts at Bat show, the Village Theatrehas become a downtown hub of visual and performing artsactivity. With rotating exhibits in the lobby gallery, theatreperformances, concerts, workshops, seminars, movies andimprov events, the Village Theatre is the place to go for allages—preschoolers to seniors! It continues this fall, with a widevariety of cultural arts events for you, your family and friends.

The Town, along with the California Independent Film FestivalAssociation, will present the 7th annual Danville InternationalChildren’s Film Festival. One of just a few such festivals nation-wide, this event showcases local and international filmsfor and by youth. Also this fall, the Eugene O’Neill Foundationhas expanded its annual festival and is including a production of O’Neill’s play, The Hairy Ape, in collaboration with the Role Players Ensemble Theatre. In the Village Theatre ArtGallery, the Town is staging a sculpture exhibit, followed by an Expressionist art show, and Once Upon a Book: A Showcaseof Children’s Book Illustrators which opens in mid-October.

For more information on these and other events, programs andperformances, check out the Village Theatre marquee, perusethis Activity Guide or visit the Town of Danville website at ournew address: www.danville.ca.gov

“I was fortunate enough

to have the opportunity

last year to coach a

3rd–4th grade girls

basketball team. Not

only was it a wonderful

opportunity as a coach,

but it was also extremely special because

both of my daughters were on the same team.

At the start of the season, the team started

off on completely different levels, but towards

the end all the girls were playing together as

a team. We even had the opportunity to play

during a Cal Women’s basketball game during

halftime. Playing in front of all those Cal fans

helped the girls with their anxiety about

games throughout the season.

Being the head coach to the ‘best team ever’was priceless.—MICHAEL LUCAS, FATHER OF ASHLEY & MORGAN AND AND HEAD COACH TO HIS GIRLS’ 3RD–4TH GRADE TEAM IN 2009/10.

Parks Make Life Better!SM

Not only has this tennis class helped

me sleep better Monday nights,

it has also allowed me to meet

a wonderful group of individualsthat I get to play with on a continual basis.

We started taking the class together five

years ago, and I have continued to register

for the same class because we take

pleasure in each other's company as

well as John's instruction. Some of us

even play together on Thursday

nights because of how much fun

we have. The friendships I have

formed with these individuals and

the instructor are why I keep

registering for this class. This tennis

program really has made life better.
