Purpose

> Identify and map Danish strongholds in development and production of environmental friendly technologies

> Discuss and evaluate framework conditions for eco-innovation

> New initiative to strengthen eco-innovation or green tech


Identification of environmental companies

> Definition of environmental companies – 3 criteria:

> Companies which develop and sell solutions, products or technologies with a direct positive impact on the environment

> Companies which develop and sell solutions, products or technologies with a positive impact on the environment by means of a better use of resources

> Companies which develop and sell solutions or consulting services with a positive impact on the environment by means of the optimization – or introduction - of more efficient processes


Resultater (1)

> Findings:

> 420 environmental companies with a total of 60.000 employees.

> 46 knowledge institutions that focus on environmentally-efficient technologies

> A total of 8 sub-areas identified.

> Companies are asked to answer two questions on framework conditions for eco-innovation.

1. To what extent do you find that the framework conditions listed below have an impact on your company’s development of environmental solutions or environmentally- safe technologies with a significant commercial potential?

2. To what extent do you find that the framework conditions listed below are functioning well today ?

The process: How to Form the Partnerships

> Soft networks:

> Exchange of information on non-critical but useful knowledge and results between companies and knowledge institutions. Collaboration on basic research.

> Hard networks:

> Sharing of critical knowledge and strategic and mutual binding collaboration in research and development


Establishment of Partnerships/Hard Networks: Broad or Narrow Point of Departure

> Broad point of departure:

> Invite all interested companies (40-60 companies)

> Gradually narrow down the number of participants in the partnership

> Narrow approach:

> Identification of the most relevant and dedicated companies by means of informal bilateral dialog

> Gradually expand the number of participants in the partnership


An Example: Partnership for Manure Handling

> 1 Criteria: Critical mass

> Important animal production> Established Danish manure/pig-slurry companies> Several big Danish campanies in biotechnology.

> Danish based bio-tech companies world leaders in enzymes and micro-organisms. Control 60 pct. of global turn-over in enzymes and micro-organism

> High quality Danish universities in bio-technology> High quality agricultural knowledge institutions

> Obvious environmental problem and future market potential for successful solutions



> 4. Criteria: Need for strategic collaboration between industry and authorities

> Only few attempts to combine enzymes and micro organisms with mechanical technologies

> Need for strategic collaboration between companies, knowledge institutions and government authorities


Role of Authorities

> Form the partnership: Bring competencies and knowledge together – companies, knowledge institutions and government

> Secure that research and demonstration projects are designed and carried out in accordance with current legislation

> Act as mediator between the parties, keep up momentum, initiate relevant studies and analysis to support the research and development activities in the partnership

> Discuss the need for change of public regulation
