DENMARK

Denmark is a country that in Northern Europe.The southernmost of the Nordic countries, it is located southwest of Sweden and south of Norway, and bordered to the south by Germany.

INTRODUCTION

Danish,is very closely related and mutually intelligible with Swedish and Norwegian.

 The Kingdom of Denmark is a sovereign state that comprises Denmark and two autonomous constituent countries in the North Atlantic Ocean: the Faroe Islands and Greenland. Denmark proper has an area of 43,094 square kilometres,and a population of 5,659,715 (January 2015). 

The country consists of a Peninsula, Jutland, and the Danish archipelago of 443 named islands of which around 70 are inhabited. The islands are characterised by flat, arable land and sandy coasts, low elevation and a temperate climate.

Denmark has a temperate climate, characterised by mild winters, with mean temperatures in January of 1.5 °C (34.7 °F), and cool summers, with a mean temperature in August of 17.2 °C (63.0 °F). Denmark has an average of 179 days per year with precipitation, on average receiving a total of 765 millimetres (30 in) per year; autumn is the wettest season and spring the driest.

RELIGION IN DENMARK

Of all the religions in Denmark, the most prominent is Christianity in the form of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Denmark, the state religion. However, pockets of virtually all faiths can be found among the population. The second largest faith is Islam, due to immigration since 1980.

• LutheranismAccording to official statistics from January 2013, 79.1% of the population of Denmark are members of the Church of Denmark, a Lutheran church that was made the Established Church and state religion by the Constitution.

The political system of Denmark is that of a multi-party structure, where several parties can be represented in Parliament at any one time.

Danish governments are often characterised by minority administrations, aided with the help of one or more supporting parties. This means that Danish politics is based on consensus politics. Since 1909, no single party has had the majority in Parliament.

GOVERNMENT

EDUCATİON İN DENMARK

Education in Denmark is compulsory for children below the age of 15 or 16, even though it is not compulsory to attend Folkeskole("public school").

About 82% of young people take further education in addition to this.Government-funded education is usually free of charge and open to all. Denmark has a tradition of private schools  and about 15.6% of all children at basic school level attend private schools, which are supported by a voucher system.

IMPORTANT PLACES FOR VISITINGTivoli Gardens,is a famous amusement park and pleasure garden in Copenhagen. The park opened on 15 August 1843 and is the second oldest amusement park in the world.With 4.033 million visitors in 2012,Tivoli is the second most popular seasonal theme park in the world too.

It is a bronze statue by Edvard Eriksen, depicting a mermaid. The sculpture is displayed on a rock by the waterside at the Langelinie promenade in Copenhagen.Based on the fairy tale of Hans Christian Andersen,the small and unimposing statue is a Copenhagen icon and has been a major tourist attraction since 1913. In recent decades it has become a popular target for defacement by vandals and political activists.

Princess Marie’s Birthday - 6 FebruaryOutside of the royal house there is no particular tradition for celebrating on this day.

Fastelavn – Seven weeks before Easter SundayDiminished version of the catholic Carnival. On the following day, Fastelavnsmandag, children go to school dressed up in costume and go door-to-door for candy and sweets.

Occupation of Denmark – 9 AprilHistoric date. This was the day when Germany invaded Denmark in World War II. Flags on flagpoles must be at half mast until 12:00, to indicate the mourning, after that it goes to full mast to indicate that Denmark is a free country today

Birthday of Queen Margrethe II. - 16 AprilThe Queen is usually celebrated in some places, and she will appear either on her balcony at Amalienborg Palace or outside of Marselisborg Palace depending on where she spends her birthday.

Liberation Day – 5 MayHistoric date. This was the day that the German forces surrendered in Denmark under World War II.
