ABOUT ME

My name is Danilo Gelsemio.

The following pages contain my academic works and much more.

Coming from Lecce, in Salento, a remote part of southern Italy, I’ve been living in Turin for

7 years. In this stimulating environment I obtained my Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in

Architecture at Polytechnic of Turin.

I was a child when I fell in love with art and architecture and these passions never ended.

I am an open-minded and dynamic person, eager to learn and to broaden my horizons. I am

particularly fascinated by the pragmatic aspects of realizing buildings, the working principles

of structures, the quality of architectural works and their material nature.

I strongly believe that architecture is a noble profession which has the great ability to design

people’s lives, for better and for worse. A well-designed architecture produces wellness to

those who live it, whereas a bad architecture can only generate discomfort to the users. At

the present digital world and global market, I think communication represents a decisive

role in the success of the architecture. Now-a-days, it is not enough to design correctly, but

the project should be communicated properly. In my opinion, the correct use of tools such

as modeling and digital visualization are important factors in the success or failure of any

architectural project. During my architectural studies, I take a keen interest in photography

which I account as another crucial communication tool and an essential visual inspection

vehicle for the architectural profession.

The Cavour Channel is the longest Italian irrigation ditch (82 km long). This zone is now

involved in the construction of a cycle lane connecting Turin with Milan. The project, which

is also developed in my Thesis of Master’s Degree, intended to place the new typology of rest

area for cyclists (Bicigrill) in the Veveri’s hydraulic node (Novara). The goal of the project is to

ensure soft mobility and to create a welcome centre for cyclists and for the people of Novara.

The project of the new spaces has the aim at speaking the same language of the existing

hydraulic architectures along the channel, so Old and New can merge in the same system

of buildings. For example, the existing Veveri’s hydraulic node grew into a model for the

distribution of the spaces thanks to an accurate analogy between water flows and pedestrian

flows. On the other hand, the public space makes an explicit reference to the objects of the

channel as well as to other architectures: the underground architecture, the water flow, the

riverbed regulated by the Voronoi tessellation, the texture of the tank border. In summary,

the designed building replicates the intake work of the Channel, because of a proper type of

Bicigrill does not exist. Various typological plants coexist in the project, highlighting the

idea that the single architecture is able to include several architectures. The main structure of

the whole project recalls the architecture of Veveri’s hydraulic node. In particular, it includes

two tank-squares, a large pedestrian ramp and some reinforced concrete shear walls.

Palazzo Bricherasio is an important historic building in the center of Turin located in Via

Lagrange 20. Its glass volume in front of the main façade is often used for exhibitions and

events and in this project it hosts a temporary exhibition of the FabLab. The exhibit is

designed with the hypothetical purpose of being part of the Torino Design Week event.

The project covers three semantic areas: an equipped planning area, a self-produced objects

assembling area and an exhibition area for finished products. In addition, the building has

an outdoor rest area available for the users to take a short break. The temporary exhibition

is organized in three longitudinal, functional bands: the central band, where the three

semantic areas are located in, hosts the workshops of FabLab of Turin, the other one is in front

of the facade of the palace and illustrates the FabLabs around the world through illustrative

panels and interior design items, the last outward-facing band includes a seating area and all

the objects produced during the workshops. The hallmark of the whole project is a tunnel

which is made up of partitions of laminated wood with variable shapes and cambers. The

partitions are designed in such a way that they can easily be assembled and are held together

by beams of wood that are fixed by anchor steel plates.

In conclusion, the aim of the exhibition is to get the users close to a new digital craftsmanship

in which anyone can design and create objects.

Alemão Residence was designed by the Portuguese architect Alvaro Siza between 2005 and

2007. In this case, the residence is re-drawn with Revit Software for an academic exam.

The building sits on a relatively flat platform on the top of Sintra, with wonderful views over

the sea. The project consists of eight rectangular spaces (five bedrooms with bathroom, a

study, a living room, a kitchen) organized as semi-independent elements along a corridor

that relates the whole house from the outdoor arrival space to the most private zone. The

semi-independent spaces are discreetly accessible through an outer path. These spaces and

the corridor allow a fluid movement and define an irregular configuration of the external

spaces: semi-private courtyards that pattern the openings onto the landscape. For this reason,

the internal corridor, also irregular in shape, is lit by external openings that create a sequence

of special stopping points along the way. Although organized as a single level, the project is

spread over four different levels, each one in relation to the corresponding site level outside.

Outside, a swimming pool and a solarium in a grass lawn make up for the inaccessibility of

the ocean. Concrete flooring and terraces covered by stone are placed between the grass lawn

and the house. The building uses load-bearing masonry walls clad in treated timber, with

wood windows and a sheet metal roof laid on a concrete slab. So, the finishes are simple with

more attention on the quality of the spatial organization.

The project is situated in an area in Skopje that is strongly marked by the Vardar River. It

grows out of the morphology of the place: the signs of the old meanders, which were there

before the adjustment of the river, are proposed again as new road layout of this intervention.

However, in the project the old islands that are generated by the same meanders become

residential areas with an internal public space, different squares and green areas. Everything

is placed at different heights, following the elevation profile of the land and creating amazing

views over the river. In order to connect this area with the city centre and to bring the project

to fruition, a crosswalk and a bridge accessible to vehicles are realized to join the southern

Boulevard Iliden and the northern Boulevard Nikola Kareve. In this way, the project intends

to integrate in the urban landscape and to avoid a phenomenon of spatial fracture in a city

where such a fragmentation can be clearly read.

The housing scheme is made up of several multi-storey buildings with gallery access: a

stairwell and an outside elevator shaft bring the residents up to the second floor and lead

them to the covered galleries. The flats come in different sizes and typology to satisfy the

upper-middle class users’ needs: most of them are Duplex, with a gross floor area that ranges

from 90 sqm to 140 sqm. There are also two Simplex flats of 55 sqm. These modules protrude

outward or curve inwards in order to create a well-proportioned facade articulation.

The project is located in the Shougang district in Beijing. This area is a desolate suburb with

little of remark, except a hulking ghost from the looming industrial past. It was the largest

steel mill in the country, sprawling from the suburbs over 8.56 square kilometers.

The intervention aims at rethinking these large complexes and turning them into different

spaces with new functions. In particular, the project focuses on disused blast furnaces,

where previously took place the steel production process.

An initial study of the industrial context leads to a Masterplan. What kind of architecture

could be proposed in order to transform the existing industrial structures into public spaces?

So, abandoned bridge cranes, house tracks and charging conveyors become urban plazas

and elevated walkways. The masterplan focuses on a specific blast furnace which is deprived

of its core; on the contrary its structure is preserved and different designers work on this

structure suggesting complementary functions for the building. The strategy is to place new

“functional boxes” of small size into the long spans of the buildings through a steel support

structure: the boxes are leaned on the existing floors, hung in the ceiling or leaned against the

vertical structures. In brief, this project inserts specific areas for the students such as lecture

rooms, a library and a small university residence. The structural solutions of the whole project

aim at the connection between the old and the new building.

Now-a-days demand and land values keep growing, the only way to build is upwards; layering

the different functions on top of one another and connecting to the existing urban fabric in

unprecedented ways. In order to make the sustainability of urban transformation possible,

a new zero-soil strategy is largely applied on the existing architecture. The project falls under

this point of view and provides two further habitable levels above an existing building of the

Polytechnic of Turin which houses the Faculty of Architecture. The new building has been

designed to integrate the original one with new complementary functions, incorporating

study halls, exhibition areas, computer labs, service spaces, a multifunctional hall, a teachers’

lounge and a reading room. In addition, a small canteen is designed for students where in fine

weather they can enjoy its splendid terrace outside. Volumetrically, a courtyard is set inside

the building that is made up of various volumes with different heights and two orientations

respecting the surrounding blocks in which this element is widespread. From the technological

point of view, sustainable building materials are an ideal choice for this building, providing

sustainability, design versatility, low environmental impact. Steel and cross-laminated X-Lam

are the main materials used in the project because an excellent structural performance can be

achieved. A dry construction system speeds up the implementation of the rooftop expansion

and allows the existing building below to remain operational.

The project is placed in an urban transformation area in the north of Turin, called Regio

Parco. The construction site of the project is the Ex Scalo Vanchiglia, an abandoned railway

yard where a new underground line will be built soon.

As a result of the study on the residential context, the Masterplan provides some guidelines

for designers who will operate in this area and thinks about new urban shapes in harmony

with the surroundings. This project analyses a single part of the masterplan.

Three multi-storey residential buildings with gallery access over a mixed used podium are

designed, including duplex and simplex flats of different sizes. These blocks step back at

the second level and have different heights to take advantage of solar exposure and to allow

natural light in the inner spaces. The apartments’ outdoor spaces face in the courtyard and

protrude outward or curve inwards in order to maximize privacy and aspect. The facades are

designed differently: the ones facing the street outside are more urban, and the ones towards

the inner court are more organic. The latter have full height sliding glazed walls with large

wood sunbreakers. The carparking level is accessed directly from the ramp alongside the

podium that contains offices, a gym and a preschool on the first floor and some retails on the

ground floor. The project identifies and develops strategies and technologies to reduce the

energy consumption.

This project studies in depth the Salento’s military watchtowers, in particular some of those

in Terra d’Arneo which are characterized by a strong, massive square plan. Firstly, it was

identified the typical architectural characteristics of these structures and theirs functional

arrangement. On the base of this research study, the project aims to design a new tourist

accommodation in a tower set in Leverano (Salento) which would be connected with the

system of similar architectures through a cycle lane. The purpose is to create a dialogue

between the old towers and the new ones speaking the same language of the military

architectures. So, it is not a merely reproduction of a specific architectural object but a revival

of typological characteristics re-interpreted in a contemporary key.

The tower consists of five floors and a terrace on the top, reachable by a panoramic elevator:

- the ground floor includes a service space;

- the first floor hosts the reception and an information point for tourists;

- the second and the third floors represent the touristic accommodation itself;

- the fourth floor has a library with a large selection of titles about the history of Salento;

- the roof floor allows a breathtaking scenery of the countryside.

The project responds to the soft mobility and tourist demands, taking care of the sustainable

land development.

The Logo was created for a design contest to promote Genoa’s identity and to ensure it

remains a preeminent center for culture, arts, entertainment, industrial economy, research

and High Tech.

Since implementing its previous identity, Genoa has experienced significant change and

asked for a new cohesive brand strategy. The logo reflects Genoa’s dynamism and provides

the city with a flexible, future-focused image.

At the heart of the idea, the Griffin, which is also in the city’s flag, was re-thought as full

expression of the identity, easily recognizable and as multifaceted as the city itself: innovative,

creative, cultural, sustainable.

The main aspect of the visual composition of the Logo is a synthesis of various elements

with different meanings. Each fragment fills a specific Griffin’s anatomical position in order

to associate a characteristic of Genoa to a body part which best represents it. The Griffin

was traditionally thought to be an especially powerful and majestic creature. As the strategic

position and the industrial influential soul of Genoa, this legendary symbol summarizes

perfectly the disparate range of strong points of the city.
