TULI HEATER

Page 3: Daniel Hull Portfolio

TULI HEATER

Tulipalo means heat in Finnisht

The form of the Tuli

reflects the intended use

of the object. A heater

is supposed to be warm

and friendly, hence

the gentle curves on

the sides make it look

inviting and touchable.

Overall, the Tuli heater

is used more as a piece

of movable furniture

than an appliance.

HEATER OPERATIONCold air is drawn in through

the bottom, heated as it

crosses over the coil and

vents out the top and into the

room.

With its flat top and

warm air rising from the unit,

the Tuli makes an excellent

heated footrest or stool.

HEAT PACKS

Heat packs are made

from naturally fire

resistant felt and are

stored within the Tuli

on the upper shelf. They

are heated as the hot air

rises around them. They

then can be taken out

and wrapped around

the colder parts of the

body.

VENA TURBINE

The Vena is a device

designed to harness

the power of streams

and rivers, and to

convert it to electrical

energy. It is portable

and designed to be

quickly installed and

removed from moving

water for instant power

generation. The flexible

fabric blades of the

propeller allow the

turbine to be rolled up

and stored for transit.

SYSTEM SETUPHere we see the system

as it would be installed.

The anchor provides

a firm grip onto the

bottom of the river. It

is based on traditional

river anchors, while

adding the feature of

being collapsible when

not in use.

TURBINE

Inspired by kites and pinwheels, the

propellers blades can be rolled up for

transport. The generator in the front turns

the mechanical energy into electrical

energy.

Page 18: Daniel Hull Portfolio

BATTERY/CARRYING CASEThe case holds all the

other components

when in transit, while

also acting as electrical

storage and distribution

for the whole

system. This allows

independence from

the power grid with

an renewable energy

source.

GRILLA BARBECUE

Made from laser cut sheet

metal, the Grilla is a charcoal

barbecue with an emphasis

on portability and simplicity.

Its curved body keeps it

strong while remaining

light. Portability is achieved

through the folding legs

and moveable dual purpose

handle.

PORTABILITY

Page 25: Daniel Hull Portfolio

When in transport mode the legs are

folded and stored inside. The lid and

bottom are locked together with the

carrying handle.

The carry handle is detached from the

front and the legs are retrieved from

inside.

The legs are unfolded and the body fits

snugly into the leg cradle. The carry

handle is latched on the top half to

become the lid handle.

LUMINAIREIN 3 BRANDS

For this project, lighting

fixtures were explored

in the style of three

distinct brands. The

focus of the project was

to ensure the brand

DNA was evident in the

designs.

BRAND SELECTION

BRAND SELECTION

Half way through the

design process one

concept was selected

for further development.

The other two concepts

are shown here.

BRAUN LIGHT DEVELOPMENT

Page 33: Daniel Hull Portfolio

Physical full scale

mock-ups were

developed from foam

models. Once the

preferred design was

refined, a digital CAD

model was computer

milled for a vacuum

form mold.

BRAUN LANTERN

Page 35: Daniel Hull Portfolio

This lantern/desklamp hybrid was

inspired by classic Braun design.

Care was taken to keep the overall

form simple and proportionally

appropriate. When sitting on its

base, the light is powered through

a wall plug while simultaneously

recharging the batteries inside.

When lifted off its charging base,

the light becomes a portable,

modern LED lantern.

Through an internship program I

worked as an industrial designer for Mothers Art

Productions. Mothers Art was a company that

designed and manufactured a wide variety of

large scale, one-off items, such as public art and

corporate advertising.

My experience included this project

for Casey Fields sports park. My

role was design assistant and

included site design and sculpture

drawings. I saw the project through

to construction. It was completed

in October 2010 in Casey, Victoria,

Australia.

Team and Individual Contributions

Mothers Art Productions - specializes in Public Art, Advertising and museum installations. Mothers Art uses a combination of digital fabrication and handmade artistry. January 2010 - June 2011 Melbourne, VIC, Australia

Ten month internship through Swinburne University and afterwords a freelance designer for large projects including work for the Melbourne City Council and Adidas. Proven and welcomed contributions to multi-disciplinary teams working with art directors, designers, city councils, engineers, fabricators and contractors. I also worked to create imagery to sell projects through 3D and 2D computer programs, in addition to sketches and physical models.

ACR services - works include maintenance and installation of heating and cooling systems for many Seattle highrises and cold storage warehouses.

October 2008- January 2011 (intermittent) Bellevue, WA, USA

Temporary work while on school breaks with some remote assignments while overseas completing my degree program. Updated half century old engineering schematics to accurately reflect renovated pipe system. Worked independently while meeting time requirements.

Swinburne University of Technology - 2009- 2011Melbourne, Australia, Graduated December 2011

Bachelor of Industrial Design with honors
