Daniel 9: The Master Prophecy

“Let the Reader understand…”

– Jesus, Matthew 24:15-21

“Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place” (whoever reads, let him understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let him who is on the housetop not go down to take anything out of his house. And let him who is in the field not go back to get his clothes. But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath. For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning

of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be.”

2 parts of chapter 9:

1-19: Daniel’s Prayer

20-27: The 70 Weeks Prophecy

The great topic of BOTH parts is Jerusalem and the Temple

Part 1: Daniel’s Prayer

• 2 - “70 Years” = Jeremiah 25:11-12, Jeremiah 29:10

• 3 - “then…” = understand what is written, then seek His face with fasting and mourning.

• 4 - this (past and future) is about God keeping His promises/covenants

• 5 - “WE have sinned” = Jeremiah 14:7-9

• 11 - “curse and oath in the Law” = Deut. 28

• 13 - “understand Your truth” = SAKAL

• 17 - “Cause Your Face to shine on Your Sanctuary” = asking for Temple to rebuilt and Jews to return to it

• Jerusalem mentioned 7 times in this prayer.

REMEMBER FROM CHAPTER 1?

Strong's H7919 - śāḵal שכל

“The wise; gifted in all wisdom; they who understand”

The “maskilim”/wise in Daniel Daniel 1:4,17; 9:13,25; 11:33,35; 12:3,10

Part 2: The 70 Weeks

Prophecy

• 20 - “for the holy mountain” = Mt. Moriah (Temple specifically) or perhaps Zion (Jerusalem generally)

• 21 - “Gabriel in the vision at the beginning”…3rd year of Belshazzar = 1st year of Darius (Dan. 5:31). Meaning Dan. 8 and 9 revealed in same year, perhaps only days apart. Chapter 9 HAS NO VISION IN IT. Must be referring to Ram/Goat vision of ch. 8 and maybe even 4 Beasts of ch. 7…

• 21 - came “flying in” quickly to reach Daniel by evening offering - see 1 Chronicles 23:30 and Dan. 10.

• 22 - “give you skill to understand” = SAKAL

• 23 - “understand the vision” = IE the signs before the great sign. Hallmark of the Maskilim.

• 24 - “your people your holy city to finish THEIR rebellion” = The Jews, Jerusalem, and THEIR rebellion, sin, guilt. It’s all about Jacob.

• 24 - “everlasting/perpetual righteousness” = see Matthew 3:15. Opening of door to “whosoever will”; IE New Covenant while King in abstentia, enforced from Jerusalem in person only when 70 weeks end.

• 24 - 6 different things done/finished at end of 70th week (IE ALL 70 weeks) and not before.

• 24 - “seal up vision and prophecy” = prophecies will END. See Zech. 13:2 and 1 Cor. 13:8.

• 24 - “anoint the Most Holy” = if referring to One, means Messiah Jesus crowned King in erez Israel. If referring to Place, see Cleansing of Sanctuary in Dan. 8:14 and Lev. 16:33. IE Day of Atonement fulfilled. Likely tied to 1290-1335 days of Dan. 12.

• 25 - “know and understand” = this is what Maskilim/wise virgins must know: the entire 70 Weeks prophecy.

• 25 - 7 sets of 7 years + 62 sets of 7 years (69 total) from command to rebuild until Messiah. EXACT timing. Jerusalem will be rebuilt with strong defenses, despite trouble (IE coming Greek and Roman empires).

• 26 - Messiah killed “appearing to have/accomplished nothing” after the 69th week. IE at the END of 69th week. NOT “in the middle of the 70th”. That distinction is vital to avoid deception.

• 26 - “people of the coming prince” = not the coming prince himself. 1. Temple was not destroyed by ethnic Romans in 70AD. 2. This coming prince is NOT “Messiah the prince”. At the very least, the coming prince is NOT historical as he is mentioned multiple times in verse 27.

• 26 - “it’s end will be with a flood/desolations” = see Jer. 4:20-22, Isa. 28:18 NASB20 - “Your (rulers of Jerusalem) covenant with death will be canceled, and your pact with Sheol will not stand; When the gushing flood passes through, you will become its trampling ground.”

• 27 - “he will make/confirm a covenant/treaty for 1 seven” - the final 7 years begins with this covenant/treaty. No matter what else it may be, it MUST involve the coming prince and the leaders of Israel, regarding Jerusalem and the Temple Mount. The “many” may be the Jews, or the 10 Kings the prince speaks for, or those surrounding nations en masse. Either way, same result. ***CANNOT refer to Jesus/the cross. Different “prince”, different “week”, and New Covenant was never 7 years long.

• 27 - “in middle of the week, he ends sacrifices” = halfway though 7 years, 3.5 years. That means Temple must be rebuilt and sacrifices re-started during first 3.5 years. That also means the Wise have work to do during the first 3.5 years because they know what is coming.

• 27 - “on the wing of abominations” better translated “at the temple he will set up an abomination that causes desolation” (NIV) or “the abomination of desolation will be on a wing of the temple” (CSB). See Matt. 4:5 - “pinnacle” = “wing”. Satan’s plans are revealed even there.

• 27 - “even until the consummation” = “the end” IE the end of the war in verse 26. See Isa. 10:20-25.

• 27 - “until the decreed end is poured out on the desolator” = the coming prince’s destruction. See 2 Thes. 2:8.

• The answer to Daniel’s prayer is the most specific prophecy ever given by God and the “wise” MUST understand it all. Waiting until the last 3.5 years to take action on this knowledge is not acceptable.

• NOTE: It is CRITICAL to know and teach the “Wise” that the “coming prince” and his “covenant” that is made then broken with Israel is NOT Jesus and has NOTHING to do with the New Covenant ending the sacrificial system for believers. It is SATANIC to assign the coming works of the Antichrist to Jesus!

– Jesus, Luke 21:20-24

“When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then recognize that its desolation has come near. Then those in Judea must flee to the mountains. Those inside the city must leave it, and those who are in the country must not enter it, because these are days of vengeance to fulfill all the things that are written. Woe to pregnant women and nursing mothers in those days, for there will be great distress in the land and wrath against this

people. They will be killed by the sword and be led captive into all the nations, and Jerusalem will be trampled by the Gentiles

until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.”

• The “Abomination of Desolation” is “the great sign” Jesus tells us about. The Maskilim MUST know not just it but ALL the signs that precede it. (The first half of the 70th Week and even before!)

• Jesus tells us the AoD is FUTURE - not just to Him then but to us now - and it is what brings the final 3.5 years of the age called the Great Tribulation/Jacob’s Trouble. And hence, His return.

• Any claim that puts the AoD in the PAST (whether the Greeks/Antiochus in 167 BC, or the Romans/Titus in 70 AD) is a FALSE TEACHING.
