Welcome to Cabarrus Dance Academy!

This handbook will serve as your guide to Cabarrus Dance Academy and its philosophy of

dance education.

We take our roles as a mentors and teachers in your child’s life very seriously. It is our

objective to inspire a passion for the art of dance in every child who passes through our doors.

In the process, we strive to set the right example and help your child (and you) create positive

memories that will last a lifetime.

Our Philosophy

Cabarrus Dance Academy exists to serve God and the community. The school is committed to

providing high-quality dance classes to enhance the overall development of the child. We

provide a safe and child-centered environment to encourage our students to explore dance with

qualified, nurturing teachers.

We believe that dance training encourages young people to develop a positive self-image as they

increase awareness of their physical being. Along with improving coordination skills and

developing muscular awareness, dance classes give children the freedom to express themselves

through movement.

The highest educational standards are expected from all Cabarrus Dance Academy faculty

members. They are lifelong learners who continue to educate themselves through certification

programs, teacher-training schools, conferences, and other learning opportunities.

Where We Started

The school began as Peggé Lee School of Dance in the fall of 1946, under the direction of Peggé

Lee Haywood. It was located downtown Concord, and moved to the basement her home on

Glendale Avenue. In 1970, the school moved to the basement of Haywood Richmond Hardware

on Davidson Drive. “Miss Peggé” directed the school for three generations and sold the school

when she retired in 1986 to Tammy Jordan. “Miss Tammy” was a former student and faculty

member of the school. She took a giant leap of faith in 2007, moving into a new facility, and

changing the name of the school – a marketing strategy that has taken the school to new heights!

The fourth generation of dancers enrolled in the school in the fall of 2010!

ABOUT THIS HANDBOOK

For over seventy-five seasons our school has been a leader in dance education. We believe

that our success comes as a result of providing solid training and quality service, as well

as our underlying belief in the strength of our organization. We have created this handbook to

offer our students and their parents a clear understanding of their commitments and

responsibility to the school.

How Do We Place Students?

Placement decisions are derived from many years of teaching experience. Often a child is placed

in a particular group or class where he or she will feel confident, in order to promote the

development of self-esteem. Some students who are placed in a higher level become

discouraged, only to lose their passion for dance. Others respond to the challenge of being in a

class with students who are more proficient by pushing themselves to work harder. Placement is

highly individual and the factors that go into the decision are complex. Ultimately, dance should

be fun! We are not a competition studio or a strict conservatory. At CDA, we want your child to

develop a passion for dance.

Children learn important lessons from their teachers and parents, acquiring behavior patterns

through their example. Our school’s faculty takes that responsibility seriously. It’s our

philosophy to encourage our students to feel, think, and act respectfully toward their peers, the

adults in their lives, and themselves.

If you have questions or concerns about your child’s dance education (such as progress or class

placement), please discuss them with your child’s teacher or the director. Talking only to other

parents can lead to misinformation and confusion. Kindly contact the school office to set up an

appointment.

Our Facility

Our studio is equipped with injury prevention floating hardwood floors. To maintain order, respect social distancing, and provide a healthy environment for our dancers, parents will be required to wait outside the facility while dancers are taking class. Lobby seating will only be available to students waiting to take the next class.

How To Contact Us?

We work hard to make the dance experience organized and fun. Keeping you informed is one of

our primary goals. We are constantly updating our website. News, important parent and student

information, contact information, and more are available online 24 hours a day. This

handbook contains a wealth of information about the school. A RECITAL HANDBOOK will be

available to parents for the performance season.

This class will stress the important skills of learning to move to different tempos, sequencing, and gaining confidence in one’s own imagination through dance, music, and tumbling. This class is a LIMITED TERM CLASS that meets in 6 week sessions.

Pre-Dance Pre-Dance is specifically designed for students age 3 with no/little prior experience. The Pre-Dance class meets once a week for 45 minutes. Students will learn (1) the basic elements of movement and dance (2) musical rhythm, time, beat, (3) basic ballet barre terminology, (4) opposites and directions, (5) elementary tumbling skills (6) seasonal songs and dance games. (45 minutes)

Pre-Ballet Pre-Ballet will meet once a week for 45 minutes. This is a class for four year olds. Students will begin building a stronger classical ballet foundation. (45 minutes). Pre-Dance and Pre-Ballet are sometimes combined for scheduling.

Combo Classes These classes are suited young students in Kindergarten & First Grade. They are one hour classes that introduce students to two types of dance disciplines, Ballet & Tap. Kindergarten Combo is for those dancers enrolled in Kindergarten (not pre-K). FIRST GRADE COMBO is a one hour Ballet & Tap combination for the dancer entering 1st grade.

Acrobatics These classes are designed to increase both strength and flexibility in the dancer while teaching progressions from forward rolls and basic balances to advanced tumbling, including walkovers and aerials. Acrobatics differs from gymnastics in that it focuses on the artistic side of floor work. It is a wonderful supplement to the advance other dance disciplines. We offer a basics class for ages 4-6 and 7-10. (45 minutes)

Ballet and Pointe We offer lessons in classical ballet beginning at age five. (Between ages 5-6 Ballet is taught in our combo classes). These classes meet once a week for 45 minutes. Students will learn the Cecchetti Method of ballet positions and follow the curriculum outlined by Dance Masters of America for classical ballet. Pointe lessons are offered to the serious ballet student (minimum age 11 and permission of instructor required). Pointe classes meet for 30 minutes immediately after the ballet class.

Tap Tap lessons are offered to students beginning at age five. Tap students will learn the techniques of both rhythm and contemporary styles of tap dancing. We follow the syllabus outlined by Dance Masters of America . (45 minutes)

Jazz Jazz classes will be offered to students age 7 and up! Jazz students will learn the basic techniques by jazz pioneers Luigi, Jerome Robbins, Gus Giordanno, and Frank Hatchett, to name a few. Our students will be introduced to traditional, lyrical, and Broadway styles of jazz dancing. (45 minutes)

Hip Hop Hip hop classes will learn the latest in street style and pop moves to today’s upbeat music. We use “clean edit” versions of the latest hip hop music. The hip hop classes will be taught in four age levels: Hippity hop, Elementary, Middle, and High school. Our hip hop classes are appropriate for both girls and boys! (45 minutes)

Hippity Hop Based on our regular hip hop classes, Hippity Hop is geared for the active 5-6 year old. These youngsters will learn the basic hip hop, pop, and funky moves to age appropriate music. This class is great for boys and girls! (45 minutes)

Sacred Dance This class explores dance as a form of worship. The class will focus on dancing from the heart to inspirational music, hymns, and contemporary Christian songs. The class is non-denominational and is open to dancers and non-dancers age 7 and older. (45 minutes)

Modern Dance The Modern Dance Class is open to students beginning in second grade. A ballet background is recommended. Modern Dance is based on the teachings of Graham, Duncan, and Horton as well as others. It is abstract and uses both jazz parallel and classical ballet positions as well as improvisation. (45 minutes)

PROTOCOL FOR STUDENTS CONTINUED MASKS– All students (except Wiggle) enter the building wearing a mask. Masks will be provided when a dancer forgets. Dancers ages 11 and older will be required to wear a mask while standing at the ballet barre. We do not recommend acrobatic students to wear masks when tumbling. However, all dancers are allowed to wear a mask the ENTIRE TIME while in class. That is a parental decision. All dancers will be given short water/mask breaks at their spatial spot. Dancers who must leave the classroom for any reason should be wearing the mask, and will wear a mask to exit the facility. As stated before, teachers will be wearing masks but may remove them when facing AWAY from dancers when demonstrating/teaching at a high level of exertion and can maintain a 6 foot minimum distance from the students.

THE VIRTUAL LEARNING OPTION Families who are unfcomfortable with the protocols may opt to attend our classes on Zoom. The biggestdifference from what was offered last spring will be Virtual Dancers will be participating with their classmates who are in the studio room and not at home. Families who choose this option must notify our office prior to dance start of your intention. Cabarrus Dance Academy reserves the right to use the virtual option on any given day (week) when in studio learning would put students or teachers at risk. Please read the Protocols for When A Teacher Tests Positive for Covid-19 and When A Student Tests Positive for Covid-19.

WHEN A STAFF MEMBER TESTS POSITIVE FOR COVID-19 These protocols may be changed at any time, as mandates and regulations, continue to change.

Staff members should alert the administrative staff at the first suspicion that they are symptomatic of Covd-19 or someone who lives in their household is showing symptoms or tested positive for the virus. Staff members who have tested positive must refrain from working on site until a full 14 days have passed since the positive test and are no longer symptomatic and/or cleared by the local health officials. We will treat each case separately as far as providing an alternative for the class whose TEACHER has a positive test result. Options will include: Informing the Class that the Dance Teacher has tested positive Continuing the class on site with another staff member Continuing the class virtually with the assigned teacher or a substitute Providing a virtual pre-recorded lesson for that class on BAND for the missed lesson Rescheduling the class when the Teacher is released from quarantine.

WHEN A STUDENT REPORTS A POSITIVE TEST OF COVID-19 We will inform the families of students who have taken class with a student who tested positive for Covid-19 by phone call and email. We will inform the TEACHER and the ASSISTANT of the positive case in the classroom by phone and email. We will post directives on the PARENT PORTAL for the dance families who are at risk. As an extra precaution, the classes who are at risk will be taught virtually the following week A student who tests positive must quarantine from dance classes on site for two weeks, with or without symptoms and cleared by the local health officials. Student may participate in class virtually if able.
