Although we’ll be providing extensive
studies of each of the inductees in this year’s
awards in future editions of DOTE News,
we wanted to at least give a sense of the gal-
lery of winners of the inaugural class of in-
ductees -- which means the first class of con-
tributors to Beach Music culture in this year’s
ceremonies.
We can’t thank Tom Bare, owner of Lynn’s
Dance Club in Charlotte, enough for his ex-

We were honored to start these annual
awards at such a popular establishment.
The crowd was comprised mostly of in-
dustry people -- if you belong to a sub-cul-

organization, then you know how you have

The rumor mills are
pumping with news of
Molly’s imminent de-
parture from Sea Cruz
on October 30th.
Word has it that
Molly and husband
want to start a family
and at 38 the biological
clock is ticking.

We hear that Dino, Butch, and Debbie are, not sur-
prisingly, extraordinarily supportive.
Molly has been a winner in everything else she’s done,
we’re sure she’ll be a star as a mother as well. Her last
performance will be in Holden Beach on Sunday, Octo-
ber 30 for The Festival By The Sea 11 am – 1:15 pm.

Sea Cruz’ career trajectory has been inspirational.
Their first recording, and chart topping song, “You Bring
Out The Boogie In Me” was released on RubyJude
Records’ All Aboard # 3 in 2001.
They hit the charts again in 2002 with a powerful
follow-up, a two-song medley of Barbara Lewis songs
including “Baby I’m Yours/Make Me Your Baby.”
Their CD Maiden Voyage included that and more with
its release April 18, 2002. In September of 2002 Sea
Cruz released “Shake Your Hips” on the New Friends,
New Music CD. If you missed it, do yourself a favor and
find out what Slim Harpo, Lou Ann Barton, Mick Jagger,
and Molly and Sea Cruz have in common on that song -
- they’re all, in Tina Turner’s famous words, “nice and
easy” while they’re also “nice and rough.”! Yummy!
In September 2003 a new song they released “Love
Don’t Grow On A Love Tree” on the Ripete label. The
name of the CD was Beach Party 2.
“Baby Say Yes” came out in November 2003 on The
Best of the Cammy Awards compilation CD. Their Full
Steam Ahead! CD
came out July 23,
2004 featuring
“Room At The Top,”
“We Can Love,”
“New York City,”
“Let The Music
Play,” “A Fool In
Love,” “Full Steam
Ahead” and more!

Before it gets lost in history, let’s remember
Nantucket’s return to the charts (Beach Music charts for
the first time, although several of the fellas were in Beach
bands *before* Nantucket) with a tribute to General
Johnson. Since then, they’ve been in and out of the re-
cording studio and back on the radio in a renaissance of
their performing careers.
Big Joe Maher has been drummin’ up the Blues, along
with a long string of Shag and Beach hits, in the Wash-
ington, D.C. area for more than 30 years.
Joe’s career began while listening to his father’s record
collection which included B.B. King, Louis Jordan, and
Little Milton -- all of whom he eventually appeared on
stage with, along with Big Joe Turner, Roy Brown, and
Wynonie Harris.
Peter White is a jazz guitarist from England. We’ve
been loving his smooth rhythms on the dance floors since
the late 90s when he went to #1 with one of the rare
Beach Music instrumentals to do so, “Let’s Stay Together,”
Al Green’s classic.
Peter was born to an English father and French
mother. He loved sports, hiking, tree climbing, and his
father taught him to play recorder, clarinet, cornet, trom-
bone, violin, harmonia, piano - but we all know him as a
guitarist. GlowGlowGlowGlowGlow contains his hit “Bullseye.”
“So Do I.”
What a surprise Rick’s ballad was at the Carolina
Beach Music Awards November 2010.
The CD was already old, and fading, news, when
Rick learned that many DJs were playing “So Do I,” so
he reprised it at the CBMA in November and it became
an even bigger hit for him.

What a star-crossed career. Lynwood felt there were
only two things he could do to make a living - shoot pool
or play harmonica. After playing a while in Southern
California he moved to Minneapolis just in time to re-
place a band’s previous harp man, Kim Wilson, who left
for Austin to help Jimmy Vaughan start a new band called
the Fabulous Thunderbirds. Igor Prado Band with
Lynwood here.
Marcia is a living synthesis of East Texas Blues and
Southwest Louisiana swamp rock. She was born in Or-
ange, Texas growing up across the border from Vinton,
Louisiana. This is the same area that nurtured Janis Joplin,
Johnny and Edgar Winter, Lonnie Brooks, Clifton
Chenier, and Kenny Neal.
Listen to Marcia and you’ll see she was influenced
by New Orleans artists like Irma Thomas and especially
Professor Longhair, a fellow piano player. Her latest CD
has put several songs on the Roadhouse chart.
Interesting mix.
Terry Garland is a country-blues player who plays a
National steel-body guitar, often with a slide, in the style
of old, old school players Bukka White and Fred
McDowell.
Ronnie Owens has been part of the blues revival scene
since his teens, backing up John Lee Hooker, Taj Mahal,
and John Mayall on the way to garnering a Hohner har-
monica endorsement before starting his own band(s) in
1979. Operating out of Richmond, VA.
Deep South Carolina folks from the Johnston, N.
Augusta region. David Bryan, STan Kee, Richard Turner,
Mike Folk, Patrick McNamara, and Michael Stewart show
why they should be heard more often!
Most notable: “Howlin’ at the Moon.”
