General News
Federal & Provincial Updates Mélanie Joly has been appointed
Minister of Canadi-an Herit-age and Official Lan-guages. A close asso-ciate of Prime Minister Justin Tru-deau, she
is a lawyer, entrepreneur, writer, politician and speaker . Mélanie was also a candidate during the 2013 Montreal Mayoral elections, finishing in second place. She prac-ticed as a litigation lawyer in two national law firms. The Canada Council for the Arts launched new granting format in December and will begin posting the new programs in the Fall of 2016. Heritage Min Melanie Joly recently confirmed that the Liberal government will keep its election promises to double Canada Coun-cil’s envelop as well as re-instate international touring programs. The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport launched a province-wide consultation to develop the first Culture Strategy for Ontario. From October through December, people in Ontario have participated in the consultation in various ways .arts.on.ca/
[email protected] The Ontario Arts Council—Due to rising rental costs and the need to cut operating costs , Council will relocate to 121 Bloor St West, 7th Floor, Toronto, ON M4W 3M5 at of January 4, 2016
Jacque Foesier Youth Dance Award will be officially presented at DanceWeek-
end to Madison Gray on Jan 17, 2016.
Come and applaud her accomplishments and meet her in the upper lobby! This
annual award recognizes exceptional young dancers ages 19 & under who are not only pursuing excellence in their craft but go above and beyond making a differ-ence in the lives of others and contrib-uting to the dance community as a whole.
RE:SOUND—it would appear that alt-hough Re:Sound (formally Neighbouring Rights) had previously targeted studios at an affordable rate of approx. $20 annual-ly, this has now changed to a formula of 0.34c per class per year for studios under Tariff 6.A resulting in a significant in-crease. We understand that RE:SOUND had consultations with the Fitness sector but did not approach the CDTA. Dance Ontario is currently in early discussions with provincial teachers’ and service or-ganizations across the country. For presenters and venues the rate under Tariff 5.A is 0.9% of fees paid (for exam-ple, $450 for total fees of $50,000). We understand that CAPACOA is currently negotiating with RE:SOUND on behalf of its members.
Metcalf Foundation—Michael Trent is
Metcalf’s new Performing Arts Program
Director. Michael brings with him exten-
sive experience in consultation and collab-
oration with artists and arts organiza-
tions, at the local and national levels, on
issues including strategic planning, transi-
tion, curatorial expertise, artistic assess-
ment and training. Most recently, Mi-
chael was the Artistic Director at Dance-
makers and the Centre for Creation, one
of Canada’s leading contemporary dance
companies and centre for research and
development in new dance practices.

Advocacy Updates
Dance Ontario is active in the 22-member strong PASO-OPSA coalition and Executive Director Rosslyn Jacob Edwards currently serves as Co-Chair. PASO-OPSA strives to strengthen the envi-ronment for the individuals and institu-tions that create and disseminate the arts in this province and for public access to the arts. Their collective memberships are made up of individual artists as well as the performance and exhibition organiza-tions that create and support artistic ex-pression. Informed by their observations as Execu-tive Directors of Arts Service Organiza-tions, the coalition actively advocates for changes in legislation that will benefit the cultural sector’s organizations, artists, performers, as well as for making the arts more accessible for all Ontarians. PASO –OPSA calls on the provincial gov-ernment to: 1. Confirm its commitment to the sector by increasing investment in the arts through the Ministry of Tourism, Culture & Sport and key agencies such as the On-tario Arts Council and the Ontario Trillium Foundation. 2. Strengthen cultural policy framework in Ontario through a consultative process in order to better address the challenges of artistic creation. 3. Support youth employment in the prov-
ince through a robust community-driven training/internship strategy. 4. Invest in adequate and affordable facili-ties for artists and arts organizations. The Coalition has recently also released two reports which are available to inter-ested groups at http://paso-opsa.com/blog/blog-2/ (i) ASO Profile and Leadership Study and (ii) Models of Collective Arts Advoca-cy PASO-OPSA works with the Ontario Arts Council on the organization of Arts Day @ Queens Park and Arts Day in the Ridings and is currently interested in a closer rela-tionship with the Ontario Trillium Founda-tion. Changes in granting applications and direction regarding the late summer OTF deadlines have proven problematic for many applicants and PASO-OPSA is look-ing to assist the foundation in providing clarity.
PASO-OPSA recently announced that it has hired Lindsay Earnshaw in the posi-tion of Advocacy Coordinator. She has a background in legal administration and is a graduate of the Arts Administration and Cultural Management program at Humber College. Her prime objective is to increase web presence through social media, and disseminate important advocacy infor-mation to a wide and engaged audience. http://paso-opsa.com/
