Warm-up: Brain Dance with Introduction to Self and General Space.
This morning I want to introduce you to some new ways of moving
your bodies. Were going to get started by warming up our bodies and
our brains. Lets start by breathing in, be sure to fill your belly, your chest and your mouth full of air.
Now, breathe out and be sure to get all that air out of your body. Breathe in, but this time, just
breathe in the air that is closest to you. Breathe out, and this time, try to push your
breath out toward to the other side of the room . Now try to recapture that air and
bring it back into your body. Breath out, but this time try to keep the air as close to your body as
possible.
Now lets wake up our bodies with a little tapping: tap, tap, tap. Now try squeezing
your muscles, from your ankles, up through your stomach to your neck. Lets slap our muscles.
Then a light brushing.

Now, bring your arms and legs close to your body into your core, that center
place of your body. Then reach out far, stretching your toes and your fingers, and then bring it in
close again. This time stretch your legs and arms while moving around the room,
this is called moving through general space. Then stop, and in your own space (or
self space) bring your arms and legs into your core . Again, reach out and stretch while
moving through general space, and then stop and pull yourself in while in self space.
Slowly stand up and start moving your head in slow circles. Stop, and move your
tail in slow circles. See if you can move both at the same time. Curl forward and try to bring
your head and tail close together, then bend backwards and think about connecting your head and
tail behind you.
Now, without moving your arms, march in self space, really stopping those feet on the
ground. Then take those feet and start marching around the room in general space. Stop,
and without moving your feet, move your arms up, then bend then down then bring them close to
your body (repeat). In your self space, move just your arms in circular patterns. Stop,
and without moving your arms, make circular movements with your legs and feet while
in self space. See if you can take it into general space.
Pretend you are climbing a ladder, but only with the right side of your body.
Reach up with your right arm and your right leg, again and again. Now switch sides, and climb the
ladder with just your left arm and left leg. Now, move your right arm and right leg in self
space in circles. See if you can take those circles into general space. Do the same thing
with your left arm and left leg, start making circles in self space and then see if you can take it into
general space.
Bring your right thumb in front of your eyes and look at it . Move your thumb to
the right and follow it with your eyes. Bring it back to the middle and switch thumbs,
now follow your thumb as your move it to the left. When it comes back to the middle, bring
up your second thumb and move them down to your waist level and watch them
with your eyes. Bring them back up and above your head while watching your thumbs.

Lets get some cross-lateral motion going one. Touch your right elbow to your
left knee. Switch and touch your left elbow to your right knee. Do that in self space,
and then start moving in general space bringing your opposite elbow and knees together.
Now bring both arms high above you, and swing down between your legs. Again,
arms up high and swing back down between your legs. And one more time. Now spin in your
self space for four counts and then jump up and down. Now go the other wayfor
four counts and then jump up and down. Now take your spinning and move through
general space for four counts, and stop and jump. Watch out for other people, and then spin
the other direction, moving in general space for four counts and then jump up and down. And, lets
finish it off with some deep breaths.

Exploring the Concept (Input / Model / Monitor):
Non-locomotor Spots and Free Dance Through General Space: Around the room are
large spots on the ground with non-locomotor skills written on them.
Each student starts on a spot and moves according to the spots name,
then I call out Skip and we move through general space to another spot where we
move according to the spot. Tiptoe to another spot
Stomp to another spot (self space)
Crawl to another spot (self space)
Fly to another spot (self space)
Slide to another spot (self space)
Body Parts in Place: Students will pick a card with a body part named on it. Students will move
that part in self space for eight counts, then in general space
for eight counts. Another student will pick another body-part-card,
and we move in self and general space for eight counts each. Repeat.
Find a Friend: Dancing by themselves, students move however they want through
general space, until they hear my shout Find a Friend! Students will
pair up with a friend and make a shape, and together they will
choose a movement (list on the board) to do together in self space. When I say, Dance
Freely students will move around in general space until I say, Find a Friend and they dance
together in self space. Repeat.
Reflection: Which did you like better? Moving in self space or general space?

Developing Skills (Guided practice):
8 Count Pattern: Four slides through general space (8 counts)
One big stretch in self space (8 counts)
Two turns in general space (8 counts)
Eight fast wiggles in self space (8counts)
Repeat four or five times.
Leaping Over Shoes: Students bring one of their shoes and place somewhere on the floor.
Starting in self space, students free dance around and above
their shoes. Then when the music changes, they begin leaping
over each others shoes as they move throughout general space. When the music shifts, they stop
over a shoe and dance in self space. Repeat.
Reflection: Which movements are easier to do in self space? Which are easier (or more
comfortable to do) in general space?

Creating (Independent practice):
ABA with a Partner: Students will create a dance structured in the ABA form. I will start this
section out by explaining ABA format and we will practice one together (hop, clap, hop). They will
choose two movements, one for self space and the other for general space.
Closure or Assessment:
Perform Dances: Introduce the four As of a good audience (Attend, Allow, Applaud,
Appreciate). Two groups of partners perform at a time.
Observational Question: What movements did you see?
End with a free dance if there is extra time
What Counts:
1. Start and end in a still shape
2. Show two different movements
3. Dance is in ABA form
4. Both partners dance
5. Show general and self space
