BEECHVIEW COMMUNITY CENTERLocated at Broadway and Belasco Avenuesin Beechview, this new mixed-use buildingreconnects the urban fabric and ties togetheran existing cluster of public uses. The projecttransforms a steep section of the Belasco

Avenue right-of-way into a new building with aZLYPLZVMW\ISPJVWLUZWHJLZHUKHYLJVUN\YLKpublic staircase. Today this section of Belasco isa dilapidated staircase connecting the light rail

stop, school, church and library, with residentialsections of the neighborhood below. The newbuilding weaves both residential and communityprograms around an enhanced stair connectionto complement and celebrate the existingpublic facilities and transform this key link in theneighborhood.

Uses for the building were selected based ona survey of existing uses and activities alongBroadway Avenue and their users. As part of thedesign process local residents were interviewedto gage what they wanted and thought wasmissing in their neighborhood. Based on thisinvestigation the building was designed to includea restaurant, gym and yoga studio, residences, and theater. In addition a residential componentwill ensure a constant stream of people, make[OLWYVQLJ[TVYLLJVUVTPJHSS`MLHZPISLHUKSSHgap in the current available housing market forstudios and 1-bedroom units.

    RAPID PROTOTYPE LAMPS

Over the course of my time at Carnegie MellonUniversity, I have learned to design and build furnitureusing the Digital Fabrication lab. I sketch my design, model it in Rhinoceros, and then use RhinoCAM or

VisualCAM to mill it on out CNC router.

The lamp above was commissioned by a friend andinspired by the works of Alvar Aalto and 1940s stylisticsensibilities.

The lamp at middle was inspired by a visit to anantiques shop in Nashville, Tennessee. It is the physicalmanifestation of my fascination with the both the ArtDeco style and the time period that infuenced it.

The lamp at right was a rapid prototyping test, whichwent from idea to reality in 18 hours.

This is the last piece I worked on during mat Carnegie Mellon. I designed, milled andin a marathon 24 hour period, but due to amaterial, I still have yet to fnish it.

The design is in part uenced by the nat
