UPWARD TRENDRanked in the preseason for the fi rst time in program history, Duke has lived up to the early season hype, recording the fi rst 40-win season in

program history while also earning a program-record 18 ACC wins and advancing to the fi rst NCAA Super Regional in school history. Baseball

America has ranked Duke in its top 25 for the past 13 weeks, doubling the total number of weeks the Blue Devils were ranked in the fi rst 36

years of the publication’s rankings (6). With a 44-16 overall record, Duke has also reached 30 wins for the fi fth straight year, the program’s

longest such stretch since the Blue Devils compiled a run of seven-straight 30-win campaigns from 1992-98.

ATHENS REGIONAL RECAPNo. 2 seed Duke took down top-seeded Georgia twice Monday at the NCAA Athens Regional to play its way out of the loser’s bracket after

dropping its fi rst game of the tournament. Junior Griffi n Conine homered twice in the deciding game and three times during the Monday

doubleheader while senior Mitch Stallings gutted out seven innings of four-run ball two days after throwing 71 pitches against Campbell. After

trailing Campbell 8-1 in the sixth inning of an elimination game Saturday, Duke outscored its opponents 47-15 over the next four games to

advance to the fi rst Super Regional in program history. Six Blue Devils earned all-tournament team honors, led by freshman Chris Crabtree’s

Most Outstanding Player citation. Crabtree had a breakout tournament, going 10-for-14 with two home runs, three doubles, nine RBI, six runs

and three walks. Over fi ve games in Athens, the Blue Devils hit .352 as a team with 15 doubles and eight home runs.

BALANCED LINEUPEight position players -- C Chris Proctor, 1B Joey Loperfi do, 2B Max Miller, SS Zack Kone, 3B Jack Labosky, LF Jimmy Herron, CF Kennie

Taylor and RF Griffi n Conine -- comprise Duke’s every day lineup. All eight of Duke’s starting position players have at least 57 starts, 30 RBI

and one home run this season, while six have also totaled 10 or more stolen bases. As a team, Duke has belted 30-plus home runs for consecu-

tive seasons for the fi rst time since 2009-10 and posted the fi rst 50-homer season since 2009. In addition, the Blue Devils have swiped 88

bases this year, the team’s highest total since 1990 (95).

BLUE DEVILS IN THE 2018 DRAFTSeven Blue Devils were selected in the 2018 Major League Baseball Draft, tying the school record set in 2009. Griffi n Conine (Toronto Blue

Jays, 2nd round, No. 52), Jimmy Herron (Chicago Cubs, 3rd round, No. 98), Chris Proctor (Detroit Tigers, 13th round, No. 375), Zack Kone

(Pittsburgh Pirates, 13th round, No. 384), Ethan DeCaster (Detroit Tigers, 18th round, No. 525), Jack Labosky (Tampa Bay Rays, 22nd round,

No. 660) and Mitch Stallings (Atlanta Braves, 30th round, No. 892) were all picked in the 2018 draft. Duke had two players taken in the top

three rounds for the fi rst time in school history, while its four top-15 round picks were the most in program history.

HERRON LEADING OFFTwo-time All-ACC honoree Jimmy Herron is the quintessential leadoff hitter at the top of the Blue Devil batting order, hitting .444 (44-for-99)

when leading off an inning. Herron has started and batted leadoff in all 60 games this season and owns a .298 batting average while totaling 18

doubles, fi ve home runs, 59 runs scored, 33 RBI and 22 stolen bases. He has walked 15 more times than he’s struck out and leads Duke with a

.416 on base percentage. A third round draft pick by the Chicago Cubs, Herron has been a productive player since his freshman year. He is the

fi rst Blue Devil to total 50 or more doubles and 50 or more stolen bases in a career. Herron ranks in the top 25 at Duke in career batting aver-

age, on base percentage, doubles, walks and stolen bases.

CONINE POWER NUMBERSOne of the top power hitters in the country, two-time All-ACC pick Griffi n Conine has totaled 33 extra base hits in 2018, including a team-best 18

home runs to go along with 14 doubles and 52 RBI. He is the fi rst Blue Devil with 15 or more home runs in a season since Nate Freiman in 2009

and ranks sixth in school history with 31 career longballs. Conine recorded the longest home run in college baseball this season, a 497-foot longball

against Gardner-Webb May 6. After the Toronto Blue Jays selected him with the No. 52 overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft, Conine became the

sixth Blue Devil selected in the third round or higher and the highest pick since Marcus Stroman was taken No. 22 overall in the 2012 draft. In

addition to fi rst team Preseason All-America honors from Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball, D1Baseball and Perfect Game/Rawlings, Conine

was also named to the 55-player Golden Spikes Award watch list. Over the summer, Conine earned the Cape Cod Baseball League’s Robert A.

McNeece Award, given to the league’s top pro prospect as voted on by Major League Baseball scouts. He was selected to the CCBL All-Star Game

and garnered West Division MVP honors as well.

LOPERFIDO’S IMMEDIATE IMPACTCollegiate Baseball Freshman All-American and ACC All-Freshman team selection Joey Loperfi do has enjoyed a tremendous start to his col-

legiate career. The rookie from Haddonfi eld, N.J., was predominantly a shortstop, third baseman and outfi elder in high school, but transitioned

to fi rst base with the Blue Devils and has started all 60 games at that position. Loperfi do tops the Blue Devil squad with a .308 average to go

along with 64 hits, 42 runs scored, 40 RBI, 10 doubles, six homers and a pair of triples.

BULLPEN SUCCESSAfter posting a 4.87 ERA in 2017, Duke’s bullpen has been a major key to the Blue Devils’ success in 2018. As a whole, Duke’s bullpen owns a

2.69 ERA over 271.1 innings, limiting opposing hitters to a .218 batting average while recording 306 strikeouts to 85 walks. The bullpen was one

of the main keys to the Blue Devils’ NCAA Athens Regional title as the Duke relievers combined for a 3-0 record and 1.86 ERA over 29.0 innings

over the weekend. For the season, All-ACC second team picks Jack Labosky (3-0, 0.71 ERA, 29-6 K-BB, 38.0 IP, 10 SVs) and Ethan DeCaster

(6-0, 1.07 ERA, 55-5 K-BB, 50.1 IP, 5 SVs) headline that group. Sophomore Graeme Stinson sports a 94-96 mph fastball and power slider, post-

ing an 92-17 strikeout-to-walk ratio to go along with a 2.09 ERA. Freshman Bryce Jarvis owns an elite changeup and sits at 5-1 with a 64-20

strikeout-to-walk ratio and 2.42 ERA, while classmate Matt Dockman has a 1.52 ERA over 23.2 innings. That quintet has registered a 18-2

record, 260-57 strikeout-to-walk ratio and 1.61 ERA over 212.2 innings.

DECASTER BOLSTERS BULLPENGraduate student transfer Ethan DeCaster has been a dominant force in the Duke bullpen, joining Jack Labosky as Duke’s duo with sub-2.00

ERAs. DeCaster sports a 6-0 record with fi ve saves and a 1.07 ERA over 50.1 innings. In league games, his ERA dropped to a miniscule 0.32.

DeCaster leads the team with a sterling 11.0 strikeout-to-walk ratio, fanning 55 batters while issuing just fi ve free passes. Among all active

NCAA Division I pitchers, DeCaster ranks ninth with a career 1.89 ERA. For the season, DeCaster and Labosky are a combined 9-0 with 15 saves

over 88.1 innings, posting a 0.92 ERA with 84 strikeouts to 11 walks. A second team All-ACC pick, DeCaster was drafted in the 18th round by the

Detroit Tigers.

On October 2, 2015, Duke renewed its agreement with the

Durham Bulls to play home games at the Durham Bulls

Athletic Park (DBAP), home of the Triple-A affi liate of the

Tampa Bay Rays. Beginning in 2016, the contract renewal

is a seven-year agreement that allows Duke to play up to

36 exhibition and home games at the DBAP each year.

The agreement also called for a limited number of Duke

practices at the DBAP as well as a new permanent Duke

locker room and clubhouse at the facility. Duke and the

Durham Bulls began their partnership prior to the Blue

Devils’ 2010 season. The 2016 campaign marks the seventh

consecutive season in which Duke will play homes games

at the DBAP. Under the new agreement, the Blue Devils will

play the vast majority of their home schedule at the minor

league venue.

Chris Pollard became Duke University’s 25th head baseball coach in June 2012, taking the reigns of the Blue Devil program after successful stints at Pfeiffer University and Appalachian State University. In addition to

guiding the Blue Devils to fi ve straight 30-win seasons, Pollard led Duke to an at-large bid to the 2016 NCAA Tournament, ending the program’s 55-year drought without making the postseason event. Pollard became

the fastest Duke head coach to reach 100 wins with the Blue Devils, recording his 100th victory at Duke March 15, 2016 against Maryland Eastern Shore. During Pollard’s tenure, 19 Blue Devils have been selected in the

Major League Baseball Draft.
