Conversations about Catholics

We are very fortunate to have two of our beautiful parishioners Adrienne and Jan who will run the program Conversations about Catholics next term for us. This program, which runs for four weeks, re-acquaints or introduces what being Catholic is. It explains many of the things we do, the

reasons why and takes you for a tour of the church to explain what everything is. If you are not Catholic yourself it is a fabulous way to find out the little things that may make you feel uncomfortable when you attend Mass with your children. If you are Catholic it is a lovely way to remember some aspects you might have forgotten or did not know. This is a very easy going, non-confrontational course. We would love our parents to be able to attend this wonderful course if at all possible. It will run on Wednesday afternoons at 1.45pm beginning on 17 October in S2 breakout room. The course will run until 3pm, just in time for car pick up. We will have some child minding assistance available if this helps. Please let the office know if you would like to attend.

CURRICULUM CORNER:

Focus curriculum area: Mathematics The Mathematics curriculum is divided into 3 key learnings. Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry and Statistics and Proba-bility The sub-strands within these key areas include: Number and Algebra: whole number, addition and subtraction, multipli-cation and division and fractions and decimals and patterns and algebra. Multiplication and Division: length, area, volume and capacity, mass, time, three-dimensional space, two-dimensional space and position Statistics and Probability: data and chance Students build on the key skills, knowledges and understandings each year and are assessed on the outcomes for the stage in which they are in. Just like in the English syllabus, the outcomes are across a stage, which means, students have 2 years to achieve the outcomes for that stage of learning. Parents can access the Parents’ guide to the new Mathematics Syllabus K-10 at: https://syllabus.nesa.nsw.edu.au/support-materials/parents-guide/ Next week, we will look at the curriculum area of HSIE (History and Ge-ography). Getting to know our Staff Introducing….

Lisa Knight, Enrichment Tutor in Kindergarten..... I was born in Bunbury, WA the eldest of 4 chil-dren. We went to St Michael’s Primary School in Brunswick then to Bunbury Catholic College for High School. I started my working career in a retail photo-graphic chain, then moved to Perth to manage 4 other stores and a Portrait Studio. My husband and I went to high school together and married in 1991.

We travelled and worked our way around Australia for 5 years (Darwin, Port Douglas and a few 4WD adventures were the fa-vourites) before returning to Bunbury in 2002 to have our daughter and son in 2004. I also ran my own Bowen Therapy Clinic at home.

After my husband passed away in 2007, I moved to Noosa in 2009 then down to Alstonville a year later where I started with St Joseph’s and became part of this wonderful community (although I do miss my family in WA). Athletics, tennis and net-ball were always part of my sporting life and I love painting, drawing and sculpture.

Please say hello to Lisa when you see her around Joeys.

Condo Drought Relief I was very privileged to announce the total raised for our Condo St Joseph’s families appeal. Our total was $1815.82 with an anonymous donation taking our total up to $2000. I would like to thank Emma in the canteen for supplying and organising the lolly guessing competition at the canteen as well as Mrs Donohue and the garden group for their generous support of $155.00 which has been the garden club income over the past month. I know Lisa puts in a lot of personal time to the garden and also preparing relishes and spreads from produce so it is very much appreciated.

In case you are wondering (especially due to the generosity on Family Day) there was $435.00 in the hay bales when they were opened last Friday.

DEALING WITH YOUR CHILD’S NEGATIVE SELF-TALK By Britta Marsh on 22 Aug 2018 We can all be prone to negative thinking, and children are no exception with their often black and white perspective on things. If a child struggles or fails at something it can lead to blanket statements like: “I’m dumb”, “I can’t do anything right”, “I’m a failure”. I have seen this in my own children, particularly my 11 year old son, who is very hard on himself if he doesn’t get things right the first time, doesn’t excel at something or if he thinks people will think less of him. Personally, I know the pitfalls of negative self-talk and the traps you can get into. It is damaging to your self-esteem and to your motivation. Ironically, having someone tell you that what you are thinking about yourself isn’t true can make you feel even worse! Teaching your child how to switch out of negative self talk and overcome challenges is an important part of building their resilience and teaching them how to regulate their emotions. Here are some tips for dealing with a child’s negative self-talk: Show them empathy & name their feelings Validating their emotions is a good way to get them to do the next step – regulating them. Rather than echoing their words, label the emotion for them, for example, “I know it can be frustrating when you can’t work something out”. Teach them to challenge their thoughts and emotions After all, our feelings are valid but not necessarily the truth. Get them to recall times they have successfully overcome challenges and how they felt when they persevered. Getting them to reflect on their positive traits and strengths is also a good reflective practice. Change their script Teach them to flip their negative self-talk to more constructive patterns of thinking. For example: “I’m not good at this” = “What am I missing?” “This is too hard” = “This may take some time” “I give up” = “I’ll try another way” “I made a mistake” = “It’s ok, mistakes help me to learn” Help them problem solve This doesn’t mean you fix their problem for them, but help them work through things to find a solution. Watch your criticism Our reactions to situations and the words we use can really stick with our kids. Getting angry and yelling “You are so clumsy!” when your child knocks a drink over can become part of their negative self-talk. A spilt drink is nothing compared to your child’s self-worth. Model positive self-talk Or at least watch your own negative self-talk. I have a very bad habit of saying “I’m such an idiot” when I make mistakes. It’s easy to forget that you have little sponges around you who soak up all the little things you do and say. Often our internal dialogue is a script from our own childhood. If you think about your own negative self-talk and where it might have come from, it can help you guide your child (and your inner child!) to a more positive place. Dan Haesler will be presenting at Trinity Catholic College, Lismore at 6.00pm. Child minding is available. Details for registration can be found in this newsletter.

See you there, Mrs Lyn Rowling—School Chaplain/Wellbeing

A few images from our Grandparents’ High Morning Tea last Friday.

Last Friday we had a wonderful turnout of over 80 people for our Grandparents’ High Tea. Parishioners, Maranoa residents and grandparents enjoyed a lovely morning tea donated by our families whilst being entertained by our talented students. Our guests had a wonderful time meeting new people and catching up with old acquaintances. This helps to build our village and spread the word throughout our community about the amazing things our school is doing. A huge thank you to the parents who helped on the day and those that donated towards our High Tea. Special thanks to

Gabby Hipkins and Mary Shelley who assisted with setting up on Thursday as well. Without all these helping hands, days like these cannot happen - so thank you. What a way to show our children the importance of serving others! From… Mrs Libby Spash: Leader of School Evangelisation (LOSE)
