Productivity The exquisite Château Baccarat Baccarat’s new collection of innovative crystal glasses, shown at maisOn&OBjet 2012 in Paris, has been designed to reveal the complex-ity, richness and subtlety of wine. sensorially de-veloped with oenologist Bruno Quenioux, the curvature is like that of trapeze, with a result that is truly revolutionary - both aesthetically and technically. the generous volume of the red wine glasses enables the aroma to achieve op-timum aeration, having a flattened form and deep, wide chimney. the white wine version, on the other hand, is necessarily smaller and has a flatter shape. in both cases, the bouquet's sup-pleness and aromas are unleashed, while the alcohol tang is minimised, enabling the wine to gain smoothness without losing intensity. not willing to exercise blind faith, we did the test with an average Cru Bourgeois, first in an ordi-nary sommelier's glass, and then in Baccarat's newest beauty, and the result was exhilarating; like smelling the rose instead of the perfume...www.baccarat.com

fUtUr HeritaGeStudents with a taste for Cognacmaison rémy martin, with three centuries of ex-perience and expertise in the world of cognac, has established a close relationship with design and creation; whether technical or artistic, inno-vation is very important to the team there. “Our heritage and our savoir-faire have long been sources of inspiration and creativity for the stew-ards of knowledge that are our cellar masters, as well as for the artists and designers who have collaborated with our maison”, says augustin Depardon, Communication Director. Futur heritaGe, a cultural project that explores new horizons, was born of the commitment to high-light the maison’s visionary, creative initiatives. exposition # 1 marks the beginning of a series of events centred on the ritual of tasting, presenting the works of eight design students from ensaa-ma in Paris and Central saint martins College of art and Design in london, who all came to Co-gnac. three months later, eight imaginative projects were born. and maison rémy martin is delighted, knowing well that fresh ideas open up new avenues of inspiration and reflection. www.remy.com

faCetUre Design: Phil Cuttance

the FaCeture series consists of handmade faceted vessels, lampshades and side table. each object is produced individually by casting a water-based resin into a simple handmade mould. the mould is manually manipulated to create the form of each object before casting, making every piece utterly unique.images by Petr krejci

& Phil Cuttance

www.philcuttance.com---------------------------------------

the FaCeture PrOCessFirstly, the mould of the object is hand-made by scoring and cutting a sheet of 0.5mm plastic sheet. this sheet is then folded, cut and taped into the overall shape of the product that is to be cast. the mould’s final shape, and strength, is dictated by triangular facets that are popped in and out. this is done for every project, meaning that no two castings are the same. the resin is poured into the hollow mould and rolled around to coat and encase the sides. each vase, lightshade and side table is handmade, unique, and numbered on the base.---------------------------------------

the FaCeture maChinesConstruction is simple and purposeful, screwed together to allow it to be flat-packed for shipping. Wheels make the machine portable within a workspace.the shelving beneath provides storage for freshly cast pieces, and room for the casting stool. the ‘hopper’ holding the jesmonite powder is made from polypropylene sheet, in the same way as the moulds. the casting jig at the back of the machine is simple and allows me to peer into the mould and control the flow of the fast-setting jesmonite. this means it is being cast evenly and economically, leaving a thin yet strong wall thickness. it can be attached at two different widths to accommodate different sized moulds, i.e. vases or a table.---------------------------------------

1/2/3. rOetDesign: Jetske Visser soot is an essential element for life and, at the same time, one of the main causes of the greenhouse effect. Fascinated by this powerful material, Dutch designer jetske Visser set about creating a range of textiles that could put this waste material to use in a positive way. By collecting the layers of soot created by burning oil inside a lamp, Visser was able to use it as a pigment with which to dye fabric. the result is a series of textiles called roet (meaning soot in Dutch). the intensity of the colour is determined by the number of hours the lamp burns and the strength of the fixative used.www.jetskevisser.nl---------------------------------------

the Bolon sisters have their feet firmly on the ground; we already knew that. this third generation of entrepreneur-ing eklunds certainly know how to take the floor in the debate on creative walking surfaces. the eldest sister, marie, creative director of the company, initiates the dance: "in our eyes, floors are a palette of innovative opportunities, rather than merely a passive surface beneath our feet; they can exude rock 'n roll, fashion, passion, and elegance."

together with their newest ‘designer friend’, jean nouvel, the swedish vinyl manufacturer invited some fauna to take the floor; nouvel’s scenography for the Bolon stand at the stockholm Furniture Fair showcased their newest collection, Create. according to sister annica, the managing director, this French architect insisted on depicting himself as a fly-on-the-wall inside the installation. mr nouvel - like a present-day Gregor samsa - clarifies: "imagine the world of a fly where the floor expands in every direction, with no up or down… this is Bolon, a universe exclusively of floors: no ceilings, no walls, just floors - a palace for flies… this is the Bolon space in which i stand without gravity, as in my fantastic dreams." the Frenchman adds that he’s a long-time fan of the brand and has been applying the vinyl in some of his most known projects, such as the musée du Quai de Branly.

Create uses Bolon’s newest weaving technology, resulting in adventurous 3D-effect patterns with a distinguished textile look and feel. With the launch of the collection, the company also introduces the inspiration Web tool Box, providing necessary ideas and devices for working and playing with the material. (WB)
