Damemu Seraphim Miz’mar - מזמר שרפים דממוR. David Ibn Bakuda About the Piyut Damemu seraphim miz’mar is traditionally recited in Sephardic communities during the Shacharit service on Tisha B’Av. The Piyut gives voice to the experience of the angels during the destruction of the Temple. Their songs of praise to God are replaced with mournful cries: angels of peace shed bitter tears (Psalm 33). There are many midrashim based on this particular verse, and Ibn Bakuda adds his own interpretation with this poem. Due to the hopeful final verses of the poem, this text was originally designated as a Piyut of praise and was only later adopted as part of the Tisha B’Av kina literature. English TranslationSeraphs stilled their songDivine creatures
and celestial rings left watchThat day the verdict was signed and
sealed Angels of peace shed bitter tears.
The cosmic lights went dark as they roseAnd the host of heaven
clothed itself in sackAnd those creatures were crying aloudThe
rings whirling about them.
That day the enemys arm was raised aloft in the TempleStruck
fire in hall and sanctuaryClipped two wings from celestial
creaturesIn secrecy I compose their elegy
Beloved, when will you return to the house of the tormented
ones?Turning the hears of ancestors to their sonsThat faithful ones
may rejoice and adulateAnd sanctify for you divine creatures and
celestial rings.
