We find ourselves inquite an unusualsituation: the racingmarket is stagnant, butat the same time we

have as much work as ever. We are working on two very importantprojects in the area of road-carengineering, which will both continuefor many years. Also, we arecompleting our Me2 project.In the aerodynamics sector we areworking hard, both to deliver ourracing cars by the end of the year,and, mainly for our clients, withcompetition and road car projects.The driving simulator has sparkedinterest from teams and constructorsof cars and components. Constructing a new headquarters inthe USA at Indianapolis requiresattention and application, as well as afinancial commitment.

Then there are the new racing cars:there is F3, the Renault World Series;and the new one for the IndyCarseries. The Renault World Series willbe a “robust” evolution of the currentone. The new F3 will be a surprise asit is conceptually different from theprevious model. And then there isIndyCar: it will be a car with a newlook; with different and advancedsecurity criteria; planned to beconstructed partly in Italy, partly inthe USA; with reduced costs and alonger life for components.We have a lot to do, and we must do itwell if we want to meet theexpectations of our customers,because all of these projects havebeen given to us as a result of thereputation that we have built over theyears. We cannot risk disappointingthose who believe in us. But I amcertain that we can do it.

A FUTURE OF LEARNING AND

EMOTIONSMr. Jasek, what are the main activities of yourcompany and how was the business relation-ship with Dallara created?“Our relationship first began during the mid-1990s, which was the infamous split betwe-en CART and what then became the IndyRacing League. At that time there were twomanufacturers – Dallara and G-Force – anddriver Nelson Piquet told us that the only wayto go was to buy a Dallara because they wouldalways take care of you no matter what. In2000, Dallara supplied us with our first two2-seat Indy cars and has since added fourmore to our fleet. In 2007, we establishedIndy Parts to become the sole U.S. parts distri-butor for Dallara and later played an integralrole in assisting former Champ Car WorldSeries teams with their transition back to theIRL following the open-wheel unificationefforts prior to the 2008 season. Like Dalla-ra, we have diversified our portfolio with four

different yet related companies. Ouron-track racing falls under the IndyRacing Experience, the marketing fallsunder Experiential Marketing Incorpo-rated, the parts are under Indy Parts,and our machining and engine capabi-lities are under the Indy Engine Groupbanner. All four of these companieswill play a role in moving forward withDallara’s U.S. initiatives.”

What do you most appreciate aboutworking with Dallara? “Integrity and loyalty are what weadmire most about Dallara. In our pastexperiences with Mr. Dallara and hiscompany, words like loyalty, innova-tion, and integrity come to mind. Ourmission as a company is to surroundourselves with the best. We feel thatwe have bolstered strong relationshipswith several top brands. We currentlyoperate the Indy Racing Experience atthe world’s greatest track (Indianapo-lis Motor Speedway) and the world’stop theme park (Walt Disney World).We have a wonderful partnership withthe world’s leading computing compa-ny in HP, and with Dallara, we feel weare tied together with the world’s lea-ding automobile and race car manu-facturer.”

The joint relationship has created thisnew project of a fantastic new facility infront of the mythical Indy Speedway,from which the future Indy cars will bemanufactured. How do think the rela-tionship with Dallara is going to evolve?“Like Dallara, our companies alwaysstrive to improve. We not only want toprovide the very best service to ourcustomers, but we also want to stayahead of the game. We have alwaysbeen open to new opportunities, andthat’s why I think this partnership withDallara is so exciting. Not only is Dal-lara focused on building the new era

of Indy cars, but it is also looking toexpand its footprint in the U.S. andoffer consulting services to manufactu-rers.”

Besides traditional activities of spareparts distribution, you will be part ofall the emotional activities linked tothis new engineering center: a restau-rant, show-cars, areas for the pit stopcompetition, an interactive museum, agift shop, a visible assembly areas,simulators for fans, possibility to ridein a two-seater on the road or on thetrack of Indianapolis, conference andevent rooms. Can you tell us some-thing more? And which of the “attrac-tions” listed do you think could havethe best growth?

“I mentioned earlier the partnership wehave with Walt Disney World in Orlando,Florida. It was important for us to expandour footprint into an area viewed as adestination and one where we could ope-rate our Indy Racing Experience year-round. In the city of Indianapolis, we arelooking to make this facility a destination– the first of its kind. Whether it is the mid-dle of summer or the middle of winter, we

want people to travel to Indianapolis andcome to one place for all things Indy car.We are inspired by Dallara’s innovativemindset and trying to use that approachwhen planning out all the different ele-ments this building will offer the commonrace fan.”

Manymay feel that Dallara simply providesthe chassis and parts for Indy cars, butthis building will help educate thosefans on the many designs and projectsDallara has been associated with. Ithink the new Dallara state-of-the-artsimulator will raise the standard ofwhat it takes to be a driver in the IZODIndyCar Series. This building won’t justbe a factory that rolls out Indy cars. Webelieve it will be the foundation for thefuture of racing.”How important do you consider mar-keting is in the racing scenario and, in

your opinion, how does the fan’s inte-ractive experience impact on brandawareness and “loyalty” in the racingworld?“Our success with the Indy RacingExperience has not been one measuredfrom television advertisements, websi-te hits, or stories in the newspaper. Ithas been simple word-of-mouth thathas helped us the most and we thinkthat stems from our personal approachwe take with our customers. It’s allabout the experience with our compa-nies and that will not be any differentin our new facility. We have always felta learning experience within a fanexperience becomes a marketing tool!”

How do you see Indy Car Series in threeyears time, in terms of fan’s populari-ty, and the brand’s potential for deve-lopment?“With the momentum that currentlysurrounds INDYCAR, we are eagerlyanticipating the largest growth spanthe league has had in its history. TheINDYCAR representation has made it apriority for the 2011 season to enhan-

ce the customer or fan experience.They hope to become more hands onwith their fan base, educate themthrough their experiences, and retaintheir loyalty at the end of the day. Ourapproach will be the same. Our goal isfor our Main Street facility to be theone-stop shop for all things racing. Westrive to be the destination of all Indy-Car fans regardless of the time of year.”

What do you think about the moredirect presence and more intense com-mitment that your partner Dallara hasdecided to undertake in the U.S.? “This goes back to the potential fornew opportunities within our compa-ny and Dallara. We know that Dalla-ra’s expansion to the U.S. is so muchmore than producing Indy cars. Mr.Dallara has made a commitment withthis facility to strengthen his compa-ny’s relationship with the racing com-munity as a whole and we couldn’t bemore excited to be a part of this endea-vour.”

The GP2 season 2011 alreadybegan in February with the firsttesting at Abu Dhabi for the

Asian Series, based around threeevents. The new Dallara car hasdebuted on the occasion, it’s thethird model. We have had custommade cars for the category since itbegan in 2005.The Italian Rapax Team, currentchampion, is ready to face the newadventure and reaffirm its status asleader of the pack. The new car couldchange the balance of the race, theprize will go to those who are quic-kest in finding the right set up.

But what are the relationships bet-ween the GP2 teams and Dallara? Weasked Gianfranco Sovernigo, ownerof the Rapax team. “We are happy tobe the first Italian team to win theGP2 Main Series”, explained Soverni-go, “it has always gone wonderfullyfor us with Dallara as a constructor,and we hope to be able to use theirproducts outside GP2”. The teamprincipal Andrea Bergamini, helpedus to analyse the evolution of themodels. “Even if it is a young team,Rapax has worked with all three GP2models”, he explains. “We used thefirst in the GP2 Asia Series, thenhaving the most expensive car, the 08,allowed us to win the 2010 champion-ship with Pastor Maldonado. Nowthere is the new single-seater, which Ithink is magnificent. The three Dalla-ra cars constructed for GP2 between2005 and today have all been aheadof their time, offering aerodynamicssuited to that period, following thechanging rules of F1. Cars that beendesigned especially with young drive-r’s development in mind, with the

result being that they are difficult todrive, and at the same time very fastand with a high performance. Withthe personnel at Dallara, the teams,including ourselves, always have auseful and positive exchange of infor-mation. They are always available,attentive and ready to solve the pro-blems that arise from time to time. Weare talking about details, because theproduct is of a very high level”. The-re will be thirteen teams on the trackfor the GP2 Main Series 2011, onemore than last year. There is no lackof innovation. After the Durangoteam finished at the end of 2009, theDPR team has also left the track.Both have been replaced by two newteams for the series: Air Asia, ownedby Tony Fernandes who was part ofthe F1 Lotus Team, and Carlin, whichis already present in GP3, WorldSeries Renault and the British F3. Itshould be noted that the Vasseur-Todt team will be called Lotus ARTfollowing an agreement with theLotus Group.

In the automotive industry,Computational Fluid Dynamics,otherwise known as CFD, is the

branch of aerodynamics thatsimulates what is experimented onin a wind tunnel, on a computer.With the help of very advancednumeric methods, it resolves thecomplex equations that govern theflow field around the car. In thelast ten years, this young sciencehas made giant steps forward:refining the technique and

improving its fundamental role inthe design and aerodynamicdevelopment of a competition car,becoming a complementary tool,and in many way irreplaceable,with regards to the wind tunnel.Dallara has also found the samelevel of development in CFD:always in step with the times andin line with the rest of motor sport.Its involvement in the aerodynamicdesign of our cars has beengradually increasing, therefore

justifying the investments made inthe last few years, both in term ofqualified personnel and in terms ofbeing at the forefront oftechnology. The technique is anextremely efficient and valuabletool that allows for thedevelopment and testing ofmultiple configurations in the faceof more restricted costs and timeswith respect to those required bythe installation and maintenanceof a wind tunnel.

AN EXCLUSIVE SERVICE FOR CLIENTSOur department has faced problemswith various types of cars, dealingwith unprecedented new requests.For this reason Dallara has investedin terms of qualified and competentpersonnel, creating a dedicatedarea to the business of research anddevelopment, around the CFDdepartment. It has a duel aim ofsupporting the work of thedepartment designated to designand implementing new tools toincrease performance. The CFDengineers dedicated to productionare busy with both Dallara projectsand client projects. These clientshave significantly increased, a resultof the reliability andprofessionalism that Dallara offer tothe market. In line with companypolicy, the CFD department offersan exclusive service to the clients,searching to satisfy the advancedneeds and to guaranteeconfidentiality of the relationshipand the data that is in ourpossession. Experience, competence,professionalism and respect forprivacy are the characteristics thatour work embodies.This is all enhanced by thehardware and software investmentsthat the company is constantlycommitted to, updating theaccounting system and the installedsoftware and providing adepartment with sufficientcomputing power to satisfy theinternal and external demands. Thelatest investment in that area,available since the end of 2009, hasallowed the creation of computerplatform shared by the CFD and FEAdepartments, equipped with the

latest generation of processors andcalculation management softwarethat automatically organisesprocesses 24 hours a day. In termsof both hardware and software, thesystem’s flexibility allows anexpansion in the number ofcalculations at any moment, auto-updating if necessary.

A “NETWORK” OF INFORMATIONAt operational level our departmentworks transversely with otherdepartments: the technical office infinding structures for the simulation;the computation office in findinguseful data for assigning appropriateboundary conditions; theaerodynamics of the tunnel tocompare the results in terms of loadand resistance and to producefurther configurations; and the FEAdepartment in providing input forthe structural simulations.Therefore the information exchangeinside the business is crucial both inthe pre-processing phase, and duringthe post-processing phase, or thephase of the analysis of results,numbers and graphics that allow toformulate conclusions on the car’saerodynamic performance to sharewith the aerodynamics of the tunnel. In this regard, typically producedvisuals that are utilised in the phaseof analysing the flow field aroundthe car are lines of the flow, thecontours of pressure and thevortexes generated by aerodynamicdetails. The more refined the toolsare, the more precise andcomprehensive the informations thatwe receive. It allows us to makemuch better improvements of ourproduct: this allows us to be presentin every type of competition andoften to see the lights go out fromthe front row.

In a further comparison with windtunnels, CFD allows for the reductionof the number of experimental trialsnecessary in reaching the projecttarget. It also allows the simulationof physical conditions and problemsthat are difficult, if not impossible,to reproduce in a wind tunnel.Examples of this are: the study ofacoustic aerodynamics; the analysisof comfort in race cars; thermalanalysis in general and, in particular,
