. . . Greetings from my warm and cozy office!

Man, it’s good to be home for a short while before I hit the road one last time for this

year’s major stock show season. So far Ft. Worth, San Antonio and San Angelo have taken

place and Dallam & Hartley Counties have had an awesome show season!

With all my traveling lately it got me to thinking, “how many miles, on average, does a per-

son drive per year?” Interesting fact #1--According to the US Department of Transporta-

tion a female of the age group 20-34 drives 12,004 miles per year. I have no doubt that I

come very close to that each year! While I’m home the clothing and textiles project is

kicking off with the ‘Bi-County Textiles & Arts Extravaganza’. This is such a fun evening of

projects to help everyone get in the mood for the fashion and art spring season! Interest-

ing fact #2-- In the 1800’s fashion “shows” were called fashion “parades”. American retail-

ers adopted the concept in the early 1900’s and in 1903 the first fashion show was held in

New York City. As show season wraps up and spring contests begin, I want to wish all the

Congrats to Bailey Dettle! Bailey has been invited to compete in

the 2014 Junior Olympic Shooting Championships in 3 Position

Smallbore Rifle. In January, there were qualifying matches held

across the country and Bailey participated in the qualifying

match at TCU. She shot a 522 on six targets. This was the

highest qualifying score in the state of Texas for girls age 11-

14. All of the scores across the country were sent to USA

Shooting and then they were compiled. Bailey was among 73 fe-

males in the United States that received an invitation to the

Junior Olympic Shooting Championships. The competition will be

held in April at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs,

CO. Best of luck to you, Bailey!

Horse Validation Add-Ons Entomology We have not received “add-ons” as

of yet. If you showed under 4-H,

we will mail your add-ons to you as

soon as we receive the lists from

the Bi-County Stock Show board.

If you showed in FFA, your FFA

Advisors will have your “add-on”

sheets. Please write thank you’s to

your premium buyer, your add-ons

and anyone else you can think of

who has supported your livestock

project. Sale checks will be avail-

able about April 1st, 2014. It takes

the Bi-County Livestock Show Board

of Directors time to collect all of

the money owed from the sale.

Insects . . . . The Dallam County Entomology Pro-

ject is looking for members!

Please call the Extension Office to

begin attending bi-weekly meetings

on insect identification. Meetings

are “every other” Tuesday at

4:30pm. Teams will be attending

the District Entomology/ID Con-

test on April 28 in Amarillo!

Senior division photography entries

are due to the Extension Office in

digital format on Tuesday, April 1.

Photos should be taken at the high-

est resolution possible and then

emailed in digital format. Photo-

graphs must be in a .jpeg, .jpg, or .gif

formation. Files submitted may not

be larger than 2,048k (2MB). All

photographs entered must have been

taken by the 4-H member between

the dates of January 1, 2013 and the

time of entry. Photos will be judged

at the county level and then the win-

ner in each category will be submit-

ted to the State Photography Con-

test. Photos may be submitted only

one time and in only one category. If

you would like to participate, please

contact the Extension Office. Cate-

sion Making contest is scheduled

for Thursday, May 2nd at the Dis-

trict Office in Amarillo. Regular

weekly practice sessions for the

Hartley and Dallam teams will be

SWINE

Back-to-Basics

Project meetings will be every Tues-

day during the month of July.

“We are getting back to the basics

with the swine project. If you show

swine or are interested in learning

more about swine this project is for

you. We will be learning about the

different breeds and characteristics

of swine as well as learning the ba-

sics of health and nutrition and se-

lection. We will be going on some

neat tours and having some guest

speakers join us during this month

long project.”

HORSE JUDGING

Horse judging practices

begin on Friday, March 7.

Practices will be held in

the Extension Office at 5:30pm on

Fridays (except spring break)

through April 4. The District Horse

Judging Contest is Friday April 11 at

the WTAMU Horse

Center in Canyon.

$30 per person for contest and

Ginger Cleavinger will be offering

Hunters Education on the 2nd Satur-

day of every month from 8:00am-

2:00pm. Dalhart classes will be held

at Elm Tree Office Park at 3331 E.

Hwy 54. Fee is $15.00.

These classes will be for the

Home Study Program. Students

need to complete the online portion

at Texas Parks and Wildlife website:

Students will need to print

out the "Practice Exam" and take to

class for instructor verification.

GREAT COMMUNITY SERVICE

Mark your calendar and save the

date—the Dalhart Trash Bash is

Saturday, April 5th.

Come join us for the third annual

Dalhart Trash Bash! Last year we

had over 300 volunteers and col-

lected almost 10,000 lbs of

trash. Help us top those numbers

this year. Sign up is free but for

just $5 you can get an official

Trash Bash T-shirt in your size.

There will be a raffle and everyone

is invited to a free barbecue af-

terwards! If you plan on attending,

Community Center

9:30—Travel to the Hereford Thrift

10:00—Teams will return to Here-

ford Community Center and start

working on design project.

3:00—Fashion Runway will wrap up.

Teams are made up of 3-5 youth

who will purchase garments within

an allowed budget, at a local thrift

store. They will then travel back

to the community center where

they will design and create a new

garment to present to a panel of

judges.

Former design students will be

there to help provide an orienta-

tion and answer questions through-

out the day.

ing & Textiles Project members . . .

High Fashion on the High Plains is a

new textile exhibit at the Panhandle

Plains Historical Museum in Canyon.

There is local history about the

items on display and we have heard

it is all, “Quite interesting”! Some-

thing you might want to try—the

exhibit runs through January 10,

2015.

Hartley Plainsmen will meet on Fri-

day, March 7th at 5:30pm in the

Meeting

Channing 4-H Club will hold it’s

monthly meeting on Wednesday,

March 12th at 6:30pm at the com-

munity building in Channing. The

meeting will begin with a potluck din-

Friends 4-H Club

Meeting

4-H for Families and Friends Club will

meet on Monday March 3rd at the Rita

Blanca Coliseum at 7 pm. Our monthly

service project is turning in the can

tops for the Ronald McDonald House

in Amarillo. The Shields family is

bringing drinks and the Bridgman

family is bringing snacks. There are

only two more meetings left for this

4-H year. We will hand out officer

forms for those interested in running

for an office in the 2014-2015

year. These forms will be due to the

4-H office by March 31st. Elections

will be at the April meeting. We hope

to see all of you at the meeting!

Dallam Darlins will participate in the

Textiles & Arts Extravaganza for

their March meeting. Please join us

from 5-7pm at the Coliseum. Cost is

$10.00. There are several community

service opportunities available. You

can either bring toothbrushes and

toothpaste to the Extravaganza or

make a pillowcase during one of the

community workshops on Tuesdays. Dallam County 4-H

Council Meeting

Dallam County 4-H Council will meet

on the last Monday of March be-

cause of a busy month that includes

major stock shows and spring break.
