Installation
The DALI ROT module is connected and supplied directly by the DALI-line (typ. current consumption
1,6 mA).
Multiple DALI ROT modules and DALI luminaires can be connected to a DALI-line, in total up to 64 pcs
each. DALI ROT modules controlling the same group are synchronized automatically. A changeover
switch, cross or step relay circuit is not required.
The device is available with, but also without, knob and cover. It can be easily combined with covers
of common manufacturers. The module can be mounted on a back-box (installation depth at least
25mm). The shaft diameter is 4 mm or 6mm with adapter.
Application and Function
The DALI ROT rotary switch is used to control the light level and/or colour temperature respectively
colour of DALI-compliant luminaires. The function is defined by operating mode selection.
With the help of the DALI Cockpit software tool (PC) or “DALI-NFC”-App (NFC-capable mobile device)
the commissioning and addressing as well as the setup of the destination address and, if required,
the minimum and the maximum level can be performed.
For simple installations (broadcast) the factory default settings are sufficient. An integrated beeper
can be used for device localization. Alternatively the device can be identified by the serial number on
the housing.
The factory default settings are suitable for broadcast switching and dimming. The operating mode
can be changed with the DALI-Cockpit or DALI-NFC app or with the help of another control device
using the DALI-command SET OPERATING MODE.

Operating Mode 1: : “I” – Intensity: Switch / Dim
application: switch and dim with DALI ROT module
operator actions
Function:
Turn clockwise to dim up or counter-clockwise to dim down the light using the UP and DOWN
commands. The respective luminaires can be switched on and off by pushing the knob.
Operating Mode 2: “TW” – Intensity & Tunable White
application: tunable white control with DALI ROT module
operator actions
Function:
If the light is off, it can be switched on by pressing the button. Turn clockwise to dim up or counter-
clockwise to dim down the light by using UP and DOWN commands.
If the light is on the mode can be changed by a short press, i.e. the operator can select if rotating the
knob is used for dimming of for changing the colour temperature (CCT) of DALI-DT8 compatible
luminaires (colour type Tc). After 10 seconds of operator inactivity the mode falls back to dimming
automatically (mode 1).
The respective luminaires can be switched off by a long press.

With the help of a DT8toDT6-converter the colour temperature (balance) on conventionally DALI-
controlled single luminaires (DT6) can be adjusted. Even the balance between direct and indirect can
be adapted.
application: balance- and level control of direct and indirect lighting (type 1) or tunable white and
level control of 2 conventional DT6-luminaires (type 2) with the help of a DT8toDT6 converter
Operating Mode 3: “RGB” – Intensity & RGB
application: colour control RGB + dimming
colour RGB
operator actions
Function:
If the light is off, it can be switched on by pressing the button. Turn clockwise to dim up or counter-
clockwise to dim down the light by using UP and DOWN commands.
If the light is on the mode can be changed by a short press, i.e. the operator can select if rotating the
knob is used for dimming or for changing the colour of DALI DT8 compliant RGB luminaires (colour
type RGBWAF). After 10 seconds of operator inactivity the mode falls back to dimming automatically
(mode 1).
The respective luminaires can be switched off by a long press.

Operating Mode 4: “RGBW” – Intensity & RGBW
application: colour control RGB+W and dimming
colour RGB
operator actions
Function:
If the light is off, it can be switched on by pressing the button. Turn clockwise to dim up or counter-
clockwise to dim down the light by using UP and DOWN commands.
If the light is on the mode can be changed by a short press, i.e. the operator can select if rotating the
knob is used for dimming, for changing the colour or for changing the white component of DALI DT8
compliant RGBW luminaires (colour type RGBWAF). After 10 seconds of operator inactivity the mode
falls back to dimming automatically (mode 1).
The respective luminaires can be switched off by a long press.
Lunatone RGBW-LED-dimmer provide various output modes, hence intensity of RGB and white
component can be controlled together or separated.
Operating Mode 5: “D2I” - DALI-2 Instancemode
Function:
In this operating mode the luminaires are not controlled directly by the DALI ROT, it is suitable for
integration in DALI-2 capable central control systems. The DALI ROT uses event messages to inform
about operator actions on the input devices. These messages have to be evaluated by other control
devices.
The DALI ROT provides 3 instances:
The first instance (instance 0) is assigned to the push button function and uses instance type 1
(according IEC62386-301: Particular requirements – input devices – push buttons).
The second instance (Instance 1) is assigned to the rotation of the knob and uses instance type 0
(according IEC62386-103, general purpose).
9
DALI ROT, Datasheet © 2019-06-26, Lunatone Industrielle Elektronik GmbH
By instance 1 (instance type 0, general purpose) supported events:
Event name Event Information Description
Rotation Clockwise Started 00 0000 0000b The rotary knob has started to rotate clockwise
Rotation Counter
Clockwise Started
00 0000 0001b The rotary knob has started to rotate counter
clockwise
Rotation Stopped 00 0000 0010b The rotation of the rotary knob has stopped
The third instance (instance 2) is second instance is as well assigned to the rotation of the knob and
uses instance type 3 (according IEC62386-302: Particular requirements – input devices – absolute
input devices) with 8Bit resolution – hence it represents an alternative option for evaluating the
rotation of the knob.
Operating Mode 6: “BD/CD” - Balance&Dim/Colour&Dim
Function:
This operating mode works only in combination with Lunatone LED-Dimmer, which support operating
mode Balance&Dim (2Ch or CW-WW Dimmer) or Colour/Dim (3Ch, 4Ch, RGB or RGBW Dimmer). In
difference to DT8-Colour Control using an extended command set, the devices provide a second
DALI-address that which is used to change colour temperature and or colour. Therefore standard
DALI-comands like UP/DOWN can be used.
The function of the DALI ROT is similar to operating mode 2 (for tunable white luminaires in
balance&dim mode) or operating mode 3 (for colour luminaires in colour&dim mode):
If the light is off, it can be switched on by pressing the button. Turn clockwise to dim up or counter-
clockwise to dim down the light by using UP and DOWN commands.
If the light is on the mode can be changed by a short press, i.e. the operator can select if rotating the
knob is used for dimming, for changing the colour or colour temperature. After 10 seconds of
operator inactivity the mode falls back to dimming automatically (mode 1).

Effective Range
In the DALI Rot up to 4 address entries can be used for the effective rage. As destination address
short addresses, group addresses or broadcast can be used.
In operating modes 1-4 (Intensity, Tunable White, RGB and RGBW) commands are sent to all
destination addresses. However, it is recommended to use only one address entries for colour
control..
In operating mode 6 (Balance&Dim / Colour&Dim) the first address entry is used for intensity
(dimming, switching), the second is used for colour control. Destination address 3 and 4 are not used.

DALI Instruction Set
The DALI Rotary Switch acts as control device and sends predefined DALI-commands when an
operator action (turning or pushing knob) occurs.
The device is based on the standard for DALI control devices (IEC 62386-103). The module is
multimaster capable and works as application controller, the function is described in this datasheet.
