How The West Was WonI just got back from a trip to Williston, North Dakota. You know, the North Dakota “boomtown” that seems to be featured on the national news every week? We even featured it ourselves in an issue of our own Connections magazine.

When I was just getting my start at DSG, I worked in our Williston location. Back then it was still a sleepy little western town that had sort of an “oil hangover” from its first brush with the petroleum industry. That was a long time ago, but I still cannot believe how much things have changed. I’ve never been around an economy that has grown so fast – and still continues to grow!

If you believe the news reports, you might think that Williston in 2013 looks like the wild wild west, with outlaws and saloon girls and barroom brawls spilling out into the streets. Don’t get me wrong, oil from the Bakken Formation has come with its share of issues. But it has also come with huge opportunities. In fact, the most prevailing challenges in Williston have their roots in infrastructure.

For example, traffic around Williston ranges from congested to scary. The city just wasn’t built to handle the number of vehicles that it sees today, especially when so many of them are the large trucksassociated with the oil industry. But here’s the good news: Western North Dakota is filled with smart, hardworking people, and they’re putting their newfound resources to good use. In Williston,

improvements aren’t just being made to roads; they’re being made to housing,

healthcare and schools.

From Williston to Dickinson, from Minot to Montana, oil is energizing a rebirth in many communities that spent the last 30 years struggling to find their place. It’s exciting, and I’m proud that DSG is part of this growth. Specifically, our teams in Minot, Bismarck and Williston have stepped up to meet the challenges that come from a booming economy. There have been times when parts and materials have been hard to come by, when service was necessary far beyond a 40-hour work week, when innovative thinking saved the day.

These are the times that our customers value DSG the most, and the times that make me so happy to bepart of this company. Our employee-owners at these locations go above and beyond the call of duty every day, and I can’t thank them enough.

Finally, I’m excited to announce that DSG will open a branch in Dickinson, North Dakota, in 2013. This new location will make construction in that part of the world a lot more practical. Beyond that? Well, nobody is certain what the future holds for Western North Dakota, but I’m glad that DSG is able to have a positive impact on the communities we serve.
